After having played and beaten Final Fantasy VIII twice already.

I'm going to guess half the grinding was in the train graveyard before the pillar fight with Reno? That took me forever. Also, in a recent playthrough, I found out A)the Red Dragon in the Temple of the Ancients dies from one Meteorain, when before I must have replayed it about 50 times, and B)you can skip limit breaks by fulfilling requirements for the advanced one (ie get the "80 kills" one before the "use previous 8 times" one). I'm still wondering if skipping lets you learn the final "item" limit break or if you really need them all.

Also, a tidbit (not sure if actually true) from a gaming forum or something: Safer Sephiroth gets an extra 10,000 hp every time you use Knights of the Round inside the crater dungeon.

Nah, I got stuck on Wall Market both times you have to go through there, not having the slightest idea what to do and all. I eventually got past it just by talking to everyone over and over again. Countless Vices, Whole Eaters and Hell Houses were killed in the process.

Like mentioned above, you need all six limit breaks before you can learn the last one; however, the Sephiroth thing is actually true. Kinda. He gets an 80,000 HP bonus if you use KotR on Jenova before you fight him, and an additional 30,000 HP and some other extra stats for each character in your party at level 99. He can go from as low as 80,000 max HP to as high as 400,000 max HP. I have no idea how this "every time you use KotR in the Crater" rumor got started though.

Playing the really old "Miracle Warriors" game a long time ago I went through half the game without any followers before I found the first fella I was supposed to recruit. Turns out I wasted tons of time trying to defeat stuff on my own when if I had have had him with me it would have been a snap.

Also, playing Sword of the Stars: The Pit, I just discovered you don't have to go walking into walls trying to get rid of the "blindness" state. Just keep pressing the X key to wait until the blindness wears off. Idiot

I didn't know any of the mass effects had maps until I got ME2 on the PC and accidentally hit the button for it. It was easy to memorize the area anyways, they were all pretty straightforward.

This happened to me just last week. There's this PS1 game called Omega Boost, and it's a Starfox clone/giant robot game from Polyphony Digital, the studio better known for the Gran Turismo games. It's also one of the prettiest games on the system, but that's beside the point. The point is, I was playing it last week when I decided to hit the L3 (or was it R3? I can't remember, one of the buttons on the analog sticks) button and push the stick in a random direction. It initiated an instant 180, allowing me to turn around very quickly and making some very annoying boss fights much easier.

I've had the game for at least 10 years now, and I never knew you could do that. I even have a complete copy and have read the manual several times. Either it doesn't mention that feature, or I just never noticed it before. Either way, total fail on my part.

Well one would be some of the macros in Warcraft III
Like choosing 12 guys, moving them, picking the next twelve (again by either double clicking one or pulling the mouse over them) and when moving a full unit you need to click a lot.
Then maybe 2 years and several run throughs and A LOT of online playing a friends thought me the ctrl + number (1, 2, 3 etc) so you have "cells" of units who you just choose by clicking ONE button!

Due to not bothering to pay attention during the tutorial, it took me about 10 playthroughs on FTL before I realized you could do things while you'd paused it. Made life a lot easier.

So, fellow escapists. In some games there are gameplay features that have always been around, but that you never figured out, no matter how obvious it got that they were there.

Mine was this:I have been playing a lot of arkham city lately, I've beat the game before, but I only recently discovered that you can press a button to do a takedown combo regularly, not just when the indicator for a special combo shows up...Derp.

So, with that in mind, whats your best "I didn't know that..."moment?

When I first played Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, I didn't know there was such a thing as Kamehameha or Super Saiyan... nor did I know about the block button... or dodging... and I got to Frieza (final form) doing nothing but punches and kicks over and over and over and over and over and over and over...


Yea. Suffice it to say I easily beat the game after that once I learned out to actually DO stuff in the game.

Wow, impressive! You know, the more I look at these, the more I think...wow...I'm REALLY bad at games (or everyone else is just really good.)

Dark Souls, apart from the myriad of little things, didn't know until just recently you could a) parry Berenike Knights (which is pretty useless because they are about the only enemy you can't then riposte) or b) backstab the first boar (which makes it a LOT easier, even than just standing behind the fire and tanking it for a bit).

You can? I've stabbed that thing so many times in the ass but never gotten a back stab. I just sit in the hallway after killing the holloweds and dodge back when it charges. Takes forever.

I had 3 of them.
1: Didn't figure out until around Episode 2 of Half Life 2 that you could roll grenades using the alt-fire. Would've been very helpful taking out those damn floor turrets...

2: I can't remember exactly how this one played out, but I remember that in Dark Souls, I had seen videos of people sliding down ladders, but it seriously took me months to figure out how to do it.

3: Didn't realize until my 2nd playthrough of the 1st Bioshock that you could aim down the sights with some weapons. Granted there weren't too many times when I needed it, but I felt stupid all the same.

I know what you mean with the 'nades...that was frustrating for me too.

Yeah, it's got a ridiculously small backstab window. The ones in the Archives don't work, they've got...armoured asses or something, making this a fairly easy thing to miss. But if you're tired of kiting it, try the other method I mentioned, get a 100% block shield and stand in the corner behind the fire, block an attack or two and it'll be burning itself to death in the mean time. Works great in Lower Undead Burg too, I always take out the first three dogs and first three bandits by standing behind the fire. For some reason once an enemy starts its attack animation it has no regard for where it is anymore.

It took me about 6 hours in Warframe to find out that you could wall-run.

Since you have to invest 30 humanity in a covenant that appears to have nothing to do with him, and kill some apparently harmless critters, it is a touch obscure. It's unlikely that you would stumble upon it without knowing. A friend of mine told me how to get back to the asylum, I know a lot of people who never got there, and therefore wouldn't be able to get to the painted world. While I love the game, it gives very few clues for its secrets.
