And I don't like fish. Do you have a point, OP?

Just like everything else, Metroid will have people who love it, people who hate it, and everything in between. It was revolutionary for its time (Metroidvania became a description for a reason) but hasn't aged well and is better remembered as a springboard for other games.

Shall I start making threads of popular games I don't like? We will be here all months.
Go play something else.

I thought it was ok, but it certainly is my least favorite Metroid game in terms of gameplay. In fact if it wasn't the second Metroid game I had played at the time (first one bring Prime) then I probably would have disliked it as well.

As other have said, play Zero Mission.

Despite being a big Metroid fan, I agree that the first one is rather...blargy. It's one of those games that was no doubt super awesome when it came out, but has not aged well at all. It's got the frustrating combination of being super hard, and cryptic. It was incredibly innovative at the time though, so I respect it.

Though, if I'm going to be even more blasphemous for a moment, Super Metroid never wowed me either. It's still a really good game. I just vastly prefer the Prime trilogy, Zero Mission, and Fusion.

I loved it as a kid, but then again, there was no Super Metroid at the time to compare it to, and, most crucially, I was using a strategy guide with detailed maps.

Same story for the original The Legend of Zelda, really.

I love both games for the childhood memories, for making me a fan of both series, and for being foundational/revolutionary in the context of the time and circumstances of their production; at the same time I do consider them unplayable by present standards unless you use outside maps/guides.

The well-implemented addition of in-game maps really did elevate Metroid and Zelda by leaps and bounds.

I only played Metroid 2 on the Game Boy. If it's anything like that, it's not Nintendo's most user-friendly game...

Metroid NES feels more like an unfinished prototype for super Metroid at this point. I see no real reason to play Metroid when Super Metyroid exists.

Metroid nes isn't nearly as intuitive as it's follow ups. Metroid nes gives players a frankly unfairly tiny amount of information. There's no indication what power-ups you need, what one's even exist, or where to use them. After i played metroid nes several times i gave up on this hard game. It's not easy to find power-ups or know where they are in Metroid nes. Metroid nes is too hard in difficulty. Metroid nes has no map in the game, so you have no idea where to go. You can't shoot downwards in Metroid nes. I don't want to spends hour's exploring a game in Metroid nes. Not sure but the nes might of had had a bunch of difficult games, like maybe a 100 difficult games. And in Metroid nes how come you respawn with almost no health after dying? You have to have a bunch of missiles for the last boss or you die Metroid nes. The stupid amount of dead ends in Metroid nes. Eveything in Metroid nes looks the same. how do you find a power-up when everything looks the same? Metroid nes is blargy which means I have nothing good to say about this game. Metroid nes is not user-friendly.

Why do I have a feeling that this is your first experience with a first gen of... anything?

Metroid for NES was pretty much the first fully realized 'Metroidvania' style game. It was launched on the NES, a quite frankly ancient gaming platform that had a grand total of eight buttons, four of which were directional.

Of course it's aged miserably. It was the first of its kind, ran off a potato, and the scope of what it was trying to do largely outpaced the hardware it was supposed to run on and, arguably, the skill of the people working on it at the time.

It's a strange topic to start, really. It's like complaining that pre-historic cave painters were garbage.

the Original Metriod is kinda ... shit ... even when compared to Metriod II it's not a good game, but every thing has to start somewhere and we wouldn't have gotten that glorious gift from the gaming gods that is Metriod III with out the kinda crappy first game.

No, the original Metroid really wasn't all that good. It seemed pretty amazing at the time, but it really has not aged well esp. compared to it's sequels.

This is probably blasphemy but I never played it. My first jump onto the Metroid bandwagon was Super Metroid on the SNES. I absolutely loved it. I don't know if I would like the first one but I'd be interested to at least give it a try one of these days.

Also, you really should add more to your opening statement there. It is generally frowned upon round these forums to just ask a question like that without elaborating at all.
Oh, boy, that's a rough one. You forget how much you take for granted in the series. You don't even get the charge shot. Super Metroid is a classic, but Metroid hasn't aged so well...

I recommend hunting down a copy of Metroid: Zero Mission. It's a vastly improved remake of the first game for the gameboy.

I started with metroid 2, them moved on to super and fusion.

I don't think I could hack the original nes version.

Not sure what the discussion value is here, there's not even a poll. For the record, no, I don't like it much either, despite my username etc. It just has not aged well.

[small]People know this is a forum, not an instant message service right, they can take the time to use a little grammar and such...[/small]

I think it's impossible to play without either a guide or graph-paper. A lot of NES games are like that though...well, a lot of the more adventurey NES games. I don't dislike Metroid on the NES and indeed, I'd much rather play that than the original Legend of Zelda. Yeah, blasphemous I guess but I thought the original Zelda was a lot more frustrating without some kind of a guide. My first Metroid was...I dunno...Prime 2 I think. I only started playing the series within the past few years and the original definitely doesn't hold up like say, Super Metroid or Fusion.

Metroid was a neat title back in the day, but it was hard and frustrating, even for games back then. I played through it once or twice, slowly grinding with passwords and maybe even making maps, but didn't attach onto it like SMB3 and Mega Man.

Super Metroid had me staying up til dawn playing it when I was a kid. And given a choice on which 2D Metroid to play again right now, Super Metroid is it. Not Metroid 2, not Zero Mission, not Fusion (haven't played Other: M) - although all worthy attempts to copy Super Metroid.

Don't worry; it doesn't like you either. Joke outside, I understand. The use of password instead of a battery is a pretty negative point. Besides of that, care to elaborate?
