I don't quite get why people hate Halo

People see it as generic, even though it's "generic" because it's ripped off a lot. But yes, the multi player is fun. At least when you're close enough to slap the other player in the face when he starts acting like an ass-face. And people have opinions. Some can settle for the multi-player, while others want the single-player. Some find its aspects good, some don't. But when it comes to big names like Halo, it becomes a war of the opinions just because it's so popular.

i hate it strictly because i hate first person shooters. Only one i ever enjoyed was Golden Eye, and i've tried giving a select few, Halo being one of them, a shot and i just couldn't do it.

I've never liked the multiplayer, largely because it innovated online voice chat circa Halo 2 and gave millions of douchebags a voice for their oh so intelligent quips.

Playing the campaigns co-operatively has always been the high point of the games for me. Especially when you find ridiculously crazy ways to beat the level or kill bosses by abusing the physics engine (vehicle jumps FTW) or seeing how many Brutes you can lure off the same ledge with their own berserking charge attack.

I honestly don't know. Sure its hardly the best FPS out there, but its far from the worse. I enjoyed playing it when I still had an xbox and I still sit down with friends to play a game now and then. I sit it down among the horde of games that were enjoyable but never blew my mind or warranted a place in my top 10 games.

Have you ever even played Modern Warfare 2? It doesn't sound like it at all. It might be imbalanced at the killstreaks are overpowered, but it's probably the most diverse and interesting multiplayer FPS on the market.

People hate halo because it isn't a very good game, a game cannot be carried on its multiplayer alone, and frankly Halo's multiplayer is pretty crap anyway.
Dude, you need to give better reasons than that. You basically just said 'it's crap because it's crap'.

I played Halo's multi for a while and thought it was fun and balanced.

In COD you have numerous issues like overpowered perks and guns, broken spawn system, killstreaks punishing good players for thier shit team-mates, and the complete randomness of many deaths.

Halo feels a bit too slow for my personal taste, but it is certainly far more balanced and well designed than the game you mentioned. In a one on one, the better player always wins.
Generic. Boring. Bland plot, which was completely ruined after the second game. Repetitive boring online play with no rewards.

After the second game the series just degraded in quality.

Oh and console exclusive shooters are retarded.

Halo 1 was good. No one really hates Halo it's Halo 3 that people don't like, mainly because it's overrated.

I don't like "power weapons" or lasers, so for those reasons I'm not a huge fan.

I also don't have an xbox...

Because it set a horrible standard for copycats, thus turning nearly the entire genre into a samey, homogenous bog.
It sucked the creativity out of FPS, and left us with a swarm of identical ripoffs, only they were even worse than the original.

People don't hate Halo for itself as a game, they hate it because of what it did to the industry.
Wouldn't it be that those that copied off of it are responsible for sucking the creativity out of fps' and doing the damage to the industry?

OT: I quite like halo its a bit of fun that you don't take too seriously, its a good fun time waster and theres definitely worse games out there than halo.

Mostly because it's mainstream and hating it has become a fad of sorts. Personally, I think that coupled with the books it makes up the greatest game series of all time.
Zelda? Mario? Final Fantasy? Pokemon? Sims? Sonic?
Zelda and Mario, while they were the grandparents of gaming and gave it it's start, they are now just being milked dry by Nintendo. I have roughly the same view of JRPGs as Yahtzee, so that takes care of FF. Pokemon? Really? I stopped playing Pokemon when I was 8. The Sims is just stupid. Sim City is mildly fun because of the epic cities you can create, but I never understood why people like the Sims at all. As for Sonic, again I have to refer you to Yahtzee. While he had a time on top where his games were very entertaining, recently he has been the star of some of the worst games of the year.

But good argument. Whenever I voice my opinion on Halo I usually get the same reaction.

Got anymore?

EDIT: I will admit that CoD beats it in the Multiplayer department. For now.

Halo as a game is probably one of the best shooters out there around, the mechanics are solid and so are the controls.

Halo as a story is well...pretentious, it's like a dumber version of Starship Troopers yet taken seriously, and the fact that a lot of people buy into it and won't stop talking about it makes it all seem obnoxious to be around.
The book was good...
I've heard that argument a lot.

But the games are what matter, the books themselves might as well be about a totally different IP. I don't know, if I want a good MP FPS I'll play Halo, if I want a good story I'll play Mass Effect.
Yeah, I heard it was an awful game. I just thought you were attacking the entire franchise. By the way have you read the book? It's actually full of political themes. ^^ (Which the movie parodies, or so I've heard.)

I dont think anyone truly hates Halo, They just hate it for its popularity. Halo is the legendary first person shooter because Halo Combat Evolved was the game that set the standerd for all console shooters.
Swing and a miss. As far as setting the standard for console shooters the award goes to .... Goldeneye!

But yes it did improve on the formula.
And now there is a pretty standard formula.

I actually can't stand Halo, but not because it's popular or what not.
I can't stand it for it's single player, its story, I don't like the weapons, etc.
Plus I don't play many games online, especially over XBL so there's no reason for me to own it or play it.
That said I don't own COD either, though I think its a better game and have enjoyed it splitscreen at a friend's house on more than one occasion. I can't say the same for Halo.

I guess I prefer FPS on PC mostly. As far as these console versions go, they didn't really add anything all that innovative that Unreal Tournament didn't have, so I have trouble seeing them as being that big a deal.

That's just my opinion anyway, but I do see why some people like Halo. The gameplay is not bad and its got a big online community.
But I also don't have a hard time seeing why people hate it, because in all honesty I find the game to be pretty average.
*sigh*
Why yes Goldeneye was a great game and made a lot of people start to like first person shooters but it still had its flaws.(Although I am still waiting for the remake. They have remade almost everything but Goldeneye).
Anyway Halo CE defined future FPS's by making you to be able to hold only two guns at a time(remember those games where you could fit an entire arsenal in your pocket), Made throughing grenades its own button(before this you selected a grenade by scrolling down your list of weapons untill you reached grenades).
Halo CE also had an amazing story line(the other stories were not so good).
I doubt Rare will ever get the licensing to remake Goldeneye but here's hoping.
Besides, every game has its flaw, including Halo.
As far as being able to hold only two guns and making a button for grenades, I would hardly call that revolutionary seeing as how not every FPS follows that mentality, and not every one should.
Besides, it would have been pretty close to impossible on the N64 controller to have made grenades its own button since every button was already mapped.
I understand the 2 gun thing because they are going for "realism" but its also a game about aliens and super steroid space marines so there you go.

Like I said, just my opinion, and I see why people like it, and I know a lot of games rip off its ideas, but aside from implimenting a great online multiplayer system I don't agree with the term "revolutionary".

Simple answer: each to their own

Ask yourself the same question about anything

this doesn't warrant a topic.

Why don't you think logically instead of asking a pointless question?
This. If you like Halo just keep playing it. Let us "haters" "hate".

sorry to double post but the whole two guns thing was to make the player pick which guns he used instead of lugging around a super gun to deal with everything he goes up against which was a good idea at the time

I promise you 99% of people in this thread never read the Forerunner Terminals in Halo 3.

Also, it's cool to hate on popular things, look at all the Apple hate for crying out loud.

While I am looking forward to REACH, and I loved the the first one, and the 2nd gave me the best memories of my childhood when it comes to gaming, number 3 is when things fell apart.

Oh, and don't get me started on Halo Wars. That thing just blew until it was well, blue in the face, and died.

My problem with Halo 3 was that balance got thrown to the wind, a lot of the maps were boring, customization in armor meant nothing, except sometimes making you a bigger target depending on how much shit was protruding off of you.

With the actual Halo universe? I dislike it immensely. Master Chief, in my mind, is a putz (albeit a lucky one). Yet again, I am a 40K nerd, and I know a super soldier when I see one. MC has got nothing on my beloved GRIMDARK world I admire so heavily.

Perfectly said. Halo as a game is fun to play from time to time, but I hate the series for what its done to the FPS genre.

I always thought of Halo as a rather fun game. Yeah its single player sucked but they started that tradition around Halo 2, but the multiplayer is one of the best I know. Certianly better than the COD or MW series or whatever it likes to be called now. At least Halo had some diversity in its gametypes and they actually felt different and each were fun in its own way. And the maps are very open and the multiplayer lets you drive around in vehicles and destroy everything in your path including yourself in often hilarious ways. I just dont get why people hate Halo so much. Can anyone clue me in on why?
Sounds like you never played CoD 4.......
I played both Modern Warfares beat both of them on veteran and the multiplayer didnt quite sell me on the whole thing because I felt Rainbow Six Vegas did the whole gameplay thing quite better than any of the COD and MW games. The set pieces in MW were better but the whole feel of the gameplay was tighter than MW. The only problem with Vegas and Vegas 2 is that it doesnt have any players on it but that could probably because of MW's fanbase.

I like to rip Halo a new one for a few reasons, but mostly because I feel it's overrated. I've played the first one on PC and it was nice, but nothing special I played the 3rd one on my friend's Xbox, we even played co-op and I watched him play multi, and it was fine. But what really gets me going is that every one thinks is the best game ever. This sounds like the sheep behavior, described in previous posts, but that's not entirely the case. I recently watched a top ten on gametrailers.com, titled "Best games of the decade". And guess what, Halo was up there, along with fucking legends. It's a good game, but seriously, one of the best of the decade? Part of the problem, I think, is that it was for consoles. The game itself didn't introduce anything groundbraking, it's just that console players had never before seen some of the stuff it brought to the table.
In short, I dislike it, because it gets labeled "one of the best ever", while I think it's just good. And Microsoft are partially to blame for this, because if the game was released only for PC, I think it would have died long ago.
And I'm also a hater.
