I'm going to agree with everyone else and say you're a dick who totally deserved it.

That guy might have had a bad day, but if you act that way all the time, you'll be buried in a shitstorm soon enough and no one will question it.

So what some of you are saying is that's its ok to assault someone for an insulting hand gesture?
He didn't even assault you!

So i was almost attacked today.
he was close enough to kick the car.
You were shouted at because you were being an impatient, inconsiderate driver, not because you made a hand gesture.

I'm a cyclist. I can drive but don't own a car. I've been insulted, yelled at, almost hit by trucks and almost run off the road more times than everybody here put together. To me, the OP is just another douchebag driver who acts like a prick when he doesn't get his way. If he wants to leave his country, I'd be the first to wave him goodbye. As long as he doesn't come to mine.
Solution- fuck cars, let's all ride bikes instead!
Eh, I've been behind a fair share of douchebag cyclists as well. Weaving in and out of cars, believing that just because they are on a bike, they have priority. Not speaking of motorcyclists, btw.

But, I live in DC. We have bike lanes now. So it happens less often. And I use the metro and walk most of the time anyway.
I know what you mean, I've seen a lot of cyclists do that. I try to hold back a bit more because I try to behave like a car should. However, if a cyclist does weave through stationary traffic to get to the front of a queue remember that a cyclist+bike weighs around 180 pounds. Compared to the cars and trucks that weigh several tons, there's no excuse for not giving them room. It only slows journeys down by a handful of seconds waiting for space to overtake. But most drivers seem incapable of doing this.

You were in the wrong. There's nobody to tell you to be nice to other people, but becoming angry at someone else performing a kind gesture is just rude and unsensitive, especially concerning something as insignificant as thing, when remaining patient would have been the virtuous thing to do.

So? You still honked him without thinking there might have been a reason for him to stop? You were speeding (limit +5 in an area with frequent crossings is really not OK) and then you proceeded to brush it off by insulting the person in the right?

You really aren't helping your case here.

my main problem with cyclists is when they are on roads not designed for them with bike lanes or just wider space. Theres this bit of road i always have to take to get home, windy, all uphill and very tight. and there always seems to be some cyclist struggling up the hill at a snails pace with a big line of cars behind them, annoying when youve had a long day and you just want to get home to rest.

Well, that seemed like a jerk move when he let the guy cross the street for you to honk at him.

So, I guess I wouldn't want to live there either if it is that aggressive normally. Apparently both of you were having a bad day. It isn't much to be pissed at.

If someone kicked my car I would of got out and kicked him back, so yeah considerable restraint on your part in comparison to me.

First one (i think) to address that part.

getting out of the car could only have made thing worse. i'm a big guy and the last thing i need is to fight a guy only to get him and a bunch of his friends come at me.

and besides i'm not a violent guy, i'm 25 and i have been in only 2 fights

Seems you know EXACTLY why he stopped. Crosswalk.

2)driving pretty fast = speed limit +5ish
In areas with crosswalks, safe driving guidelines state you should be 5kph below the speed limit, so that you have ample time to notice things like crosswalks and cars suddenly coming to a gentle stop. Which involves big FUCKING BRIGHT RED LIGHTS that say 'HEY I AM SLOWING DOWN SO WATCH ME SLOW DOWN.'

So what some of you are saying is that's its ok to assault someone for an insulting hand gesture?
You were obstensibly telling the guy to go fuck himself. If someone told you to go fuck yourself for doing the right thing, would you take it kindly?

Moreover, if what you say is true, and you were unaware of the fact that he stopped because of a crosswalk, let's be honest, you're a shitty driver who needs to pay more attention. Drivers who stop at crosswalks stop in one of two ways... the slow safe stop that you have MORE than enough time to see and have no excuse not to pay attention to... or the sudden 'OH SHIT THERE'S A CHILD ABOUT TO BE SMOOSHED ON MY GRILL' stop that's kind of an emergency and could, if not done, lead to a pedestrian injury or death.

In -either- case, you have absolutely zero right to *****. You should have noticed the crosswalk (road signs, amirite?) and you should have paid attention to the fucking road. You didn't, and he rightfully called your ass out for it.

Stop trying to rationalize being a bad driver. It only exposes you as a bad driver, and a dick.

The proper thing to have done was to go 'Wow, I am a stupid shithead' and shrug your shoulders in that way that stupid shits do when they do stupid shit things in a car, thusly telling the other driver you're a dumb fuck, and essentially saying 'Whoops, I'm sorry, and had a dumb' in car language.

That'd certainly be better than coming onto the internet and claiming to be the VICTIM in all this. That's just petty and pathetic. Be a man, dude. Not a baby.

And if you incited the assault via an insult then its your fault and unsurprising you were assaulted.

But you din't even get assaulted, not even close.
I personally believe that the only reason to raise a hand at someone is self defense. i can't imagine being set off by a gesture, i really cant.

As someone who can't afford a car and walks everywhere, let me just say that when you are driving, chances are you will get to your destination long before I get to mine, so it can't hurt to take ten seconds out of your day to let me cross the road, can it?

While the guy in OP's post definitely overreacted, I have no sympathy for OP.

I was driving in my car pretty fast when the driver in front of me stopped at a crossing in order to let a guy cross the road. i was pissed so i honked once. the guy who was walking started yelling at me. i made a gesture for "pshh" (pretty dumb on my part i know) and the guy just flipped started running towards my car yelling for me to get out. obviously i didn't and started driving when i could but he was close enough to kick the car.

What kind of a fucked up world do we live on that someone can turn violent from a hand gesture from a guy he does not know in a car across the road.

So escapist... what do you think?
Yes, please leave the planet.

This, pretty much.
It's not their fault you were being irresponsible on the road, and were being a dick about it too.

I've always found negativity begets negativity. It was rather immature of him to flip out like that, but it was at least equally immature of you to honk your horn for only being inconvenienced for a few seconds, at best. The whole thing could have prevented if you held yourself to the same standards you wish to hold the other guy to.

I'm guessing that's not the reaction expected when you post this little tale of yours, is it? Been there, done that.

Anyway, don't get pissed and defensive about it, just think about it that way: if the guy only gives you a bad look and walk away after your gesture, you'd get cocky, satisfied and feel good about yourself, probably repeating that kind of attitude. BUT, considering he overreacted you will think twice before doing something like that again, avoiding a similar situation with possibly much worse consequences.

While it would never have been in place for him to attack you, i don't really have any sympathy for you, seeing as you acted as a first-class douchebag yourself.
