I personally like math, but I think the problem you were given is worded weirdly...
If you really hate algebra so much, you have yet to imagine AP Calculus BC. I took it this year and ugh... Take that class and get back to me about how bad algebra is lol.

I'm really good at algebra, but I suck ass at word problems like in the OP. They never make sense to me at all. I can do the actual math part, but the set-up part never makes sense to me. It's just one of those things that I've never had a important use for in real life so far.
Yeah, I get exactly what you mean. I had trouble with this stuff too when we started out in grade seven a couple of years ago. It's just one of those things that doesn't click in my head.

It seems like the more advanced math other than adding, subtracted, multiplying, and dividing are completely useless. There just in place to filter out people from getting advanced degrees.

Riiiight, so there's no use for any other type of maths? So percentages are pointless? And geometry is useless? You should just think about how much it's used everyday by everyone and then tell me it's useless

Yeah, I think so too. I talked with some kids from the same class and they all said he explained it really weirdly and barely touched it before moving on. And I can only imagine the horrors of Calculus, shesh. I'll have to take it eventually, but I am so dreading that day.

You're lucky it's algebra. I study calculus, and it is REALLY EFFING HARD. In my opinion, of course.
Haha, so true. Calculus is damn near impossible!

My favorite part about math and algebra is that in the real world, calculators and computers do it for you! My absolute favorite part about college math was my instructor who insisted that my previous statement wasn't true. She's been teaching math in college for 40+ years, so me thinks she's not quite in-touch with reality...

Don't dread calculus!

It's the most elegant area of maths there is, and incredible handy. If you want to do maths of course.

Learn algebra anyway, it is very important. Not becuase Sue can't balance her own checkbook, but because one becomes acustomed to think with exact precision, in variables, and one learns to look for the empty spaces that balance out equations. Calculus too is important in intutively understanding rates of change and the relationship between position, motion, and acceleration. That has broader applications than you think.

America, and from what I read Europe too, have economies which are falling to pieces because people don't understand basic math when it comes to money management. It is because we are math-tards that so many people have fallen victim to financial shenanigans; that, and people were too trusting of the system. Both of these are failures of intellect. Anyway, as you can see I have little tolerance for stupid people, because then they go whining to the government for bailouts, and my tax money has to pay for it.

Sue Spender, withdrawals $25.00 from her bank account each week to spend on shoes. After six weeks she has withdrawn $425.00 from her account.

a) How much money did she have six weeks prior to her crazy shoe purchasing? Solve the equation using algebra.
If you want us to help you with your homework you have to write out the problem exactly.

I grew to like math in high school. Now i can not only stand it, but i will take extra time to finish a series of math problems, time i could be spending playing video games.

This worries me greatly.

I'm sorry, math isn't exactly my forte (English or Science would be that) and I just hate questions like this - god damn algebra. Either you can tell me which kind of math you hate or help me with my homework. Thanks!

Edit: Okay, so maybe he wrote it out wrong. Sorry if I wasted your time.
Am I crazy or that equation is wrong somehow ? (or does algebra hate me, which is also possible)
$25 * 6 = 150$, so where would the extra $275 be withdrawn from ?

Calculus also explains pretty much everything you need to know about math and math is the basis for modern science, therefor calculus explains everything about everything

Maths is simple, I'm doing A level maths in the UK and im breezing through it with straight As, if you don't like maths dont do it and more importantly don't whine about it!

Maths in high school is still ok, but in university, then you will feel the pain: when something requires more than 5 dimensions to be calculated, my programmer brain refuse to allocate memory for the operation. :/

I have nothing to say other than... PREPARE TO GET FACE FUCKED BY CALCULUS!

eh, nevermind. Calc isn't required...

So there's a bit of necessary information missing from that problem, so no help there.

On the topic of math, I fucking love math. Hated proofs until just this last semester. Number theory proofs, my god, they made sense, they were beautiful for christ's sake. I was especially fond of the fibonacci ones.

Anyway, I didn't much care for Algebra at first. (I was sick a lot when I was in those classes, and guess who missed the week where the concept of a 'slope' was introduced.) After a little while (once I figured out the whole slope thing...) I started to love math again.

Also, Calculus made my year last year.

I have a love-hate relationship with math.
Calc 1 was freaking stupid (mainly cause my professor was one of the biggest assholes in the school)
Calc 2 was kinda...fun dare I say. I still hate it, but when I used the stuff I learned in my math class and saw how it was applied to my engineering classes, I actually saw the use for it. Rather than:
"Solve problems 5-35 odd"
"why? What purpose does this type of math have"
"Because I said so, stop asking questions"

Oh christ, I can see how that really screwed you over. I didn't get it at first but I eventually caught on. Silly slope.

Algebra and calculus are nothing. Just wait till you find yourself studying Numerical Methods. It's not really hard, just really really boring. But I was probably just a little unlucky since both my lecturers were boring, for both numerical methods and advanced numberical methods. I chose it cuz it looked easier than Mathematical Thinking.
