x+25*6=425

substract x from both sides
x-x+25*6=425-x
25*6=425-x

substract 425 from both sides
25*6-425=425-425-x
25*6-425=-x
210-425=-x
-215=-x
x=215
25*6 doesn't equal 210...
LOL I was checking if you were paying atention.
*smirks* Suuuuure.

We'll assume you mean it like this. And I'm using £ symbols because I'm from England and I'm more used to it, but I mean $ symbols in the context.

Question:

Sue withdraws £25 per week to spend on shoes. After six weeks she has £425 left in her account. How much did she have in her account six weeks ago?

Answer:

Take x = amount of money she had before. So we need to find x.

x - (6*25) = 425

=> x = 425 + (6*25)
= 425 + 150
=> x = 575

So she had £525 six weeks before. Simples!

Algebra is useless in everyday life. Maybe pre-algebra, possibly even algebra 1, could be useful. But the fact is, once you get into college for sure, math classes are wastes of time unless it is directly involved in the field you are going into. Screw math classes in college.
Algebra is used in almost anything in everyday life. You can use it for doing your budget at home, or it might be necessary (nay, vital) for someone working in an office and needing to balance the books or whatever. A basic knowledge of algebra could be vital if you want to get promoted.

As far as university-level maths goes, I agree completely. I do Maths at BSc level, just ending my second year now, and it's all stuff that I'm never going to use in real life. However, some of the stuff (Geometry of Curves and Surfaces, for example, or Non-Linear Differential Equations) is fairly important for the career I intend to pursue, that is, working in games development (articularly in level design). It's also why I did an elective in Programming. But aside from that, most of the stuff I'm learning is pretty useless outside of the workplace, and often even within it...

Math is easy. Im two years ahead in math. Im taking Honors Algebra 2 as a freshman. The thing about math is, if you miss something earlier in the year, your fucked. Math continuosly builds on itself

a) How much money did she have six weeks prior to her crazy shoe purchasing? Solve the equation using algebra.

I'm sorry, math isn't exactly my forte (English or Science would be that) and I just hate questions like this - god damn algebra. Either you can tell me which kind of math you hate or help me with my homework. Thanks!

Edit: Okay, so maybe he wrote it out wrong. Sorry if I wasted your time.
Fark you.

Right now I am doing quadratics of projectile paths without using calculus.

If you think you hate algebra...

Let me assure you, there are FAR more annoying things out there.

Try wrapping your head around a figure with a finite volume and infinite surface area. Gabriel's Horn is an evil, evil thing!

Wow, I never really thought of using math that way. I mean, I remember him saying how it's used in computers, but I never really gave it much thought until I read the paragraph. I thought to myself just a few days ago as well, hey, what would it be like to be a video game designer? I still have a large path in front of me and from reading that post... well, it looks like I'd bettter start shaping up my math. I'm slowly starting to understand all these things people are saying - I guess though, I could understand a bit easier if I didn't get so frustrated with the stuff. I still have a long ways to go, but thank you.
Well, games programming is not games design. The designers are the ones with the vision, but who are not highly technical people, and we are just the code monkeys who have to listen to their ramblings and try to work out what they're talking about and how to turn that into a system that is close to what they envisioned. We have next to no input on the creative process. Observe:

Fark you.

Right now I have to combine Laplace Transforms [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laplace_Transform], Transfer Functions [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfer_function], Multivariable Calculus [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multivariable_calculus] and Lagrangian Mechanics [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagrangian_mechanics].

My problem is that I start thinking about something else in class, say, the plot of a movie I'd like to make. Then I have no idea how to do anything, and have to have the internet help me.

You should stop taking advanced math and start redoing your English classes ;D

For me it's writing. I start writing a novel I want to get working on, and then I completely lose the lesson that's being taught.

Yeah, I believe that's what we did. I lost the sheet though, but I remember 525 wasn't the end of the quesiton. There was another step to it, because it involved redoing the equation and replacing b I think.

Math is awesome! You're just bad at it!

Or you're teacher has lots of typos and since you don't understand the subject you are further prevented from learning it by your teachers inability to type.

Either way, I think math is awesome.

Hmm, can we mix the two together?
I mean, I can the potential of me liking math - I guess I've just yet to have a decent teacher. I haven't found one who has given me enough inspiration to get myself buried in the subject. I mean, my English teacher is great at that, but my Math teacher... he's just... How do I put it? I feel like half the time, he might not know what he's talking about. He once told me how he'll ramble about something completely irrelevent for 15 minutes, to see how long we can hold on.

Can't we use that time to do some learning instead of him shoving it at us on our way out the door to do at home?

Yeah, sometimes it's a novel, just right now I've been "working" on a game for awhile. I'm up to the first radical plot shift...

Okay, you got me - not exactly a novel, more like a short story.
