I don't know if you have it out there in NJ, but Insight has some nice broadband. I have there low end service (1/2 as fast as their premium) and I got ove 8mb/s from my wireless connection to my PS3. And I am using their G router.

Is that good or bad? If good, then somethings wrong because I'm having similar problems.
That's really good.

Haha even I get better results on NY servers than my own ISP, and I'm in Minnesota.

Time to be helpful:
If you're having problems, it's something on your side (pc, router, ect.), as you have extremely kickass internet.
I see. Thanks

My wireless internet connection sucks too, but that it because my router sucks. It doesn't even have an antenna thing; it's just a box. I need a more expensive one.

I saw somebody say they had a G router in an earlier post. Can someone explain the difference between the types, and which one is the best?

EDIT:

My speeds suck, but I seem to have decent ping (I'm pretty sure it's the lower the better), so I'm pretty sure it's my router that is making my online gaming lag.

Wireless is bad. No matter what.

I suffered with wireless for years with the exact same problems you describe, then I just bought an ethernet cable and ran it from my router to my computer. Now my connection is rock solid, and faster than it ever was with wireless.
My wireless works better than when I use a cable.
You're one of the few, then. The big problem with wireless is that it tends to be easily interrupted by other signals. I used to have wireless and any time me or one of my room mates got a call or text message the internet would crap out for a while. I think a lot of these kinds of issues have been fixed with newer hardware, but I swore off of wireless forever after getting chain DC'ed so frequently.

Well you obviously have never met me. I prefer the manual labour. There aren't any good paying jobs in my area so Im stuck working a desk job at a place I don't even know the name of. Oh well, opinions right? Lets agree to respect each others and get on with our vastly different lives.

I assume that you connect via a wireless signal. How far away are you from your signal's source? Are there walls in the way? If so what are the walls made of?

i prefer manual labor to but it sucks. working for 6 days straight baling hay, and your hand hurt so bad you cant un-curl your fingers, is the soul crushing part.

Oh, well I never bailed hay so I can't comment on that. But I like the pain so it really doesn't bother me.

So for a while now, I have been putting up with my horrible internet connection. The problems range from the following:

Xbox360 Gaming:
-Often have trouble connecting to matches
-sometimes must put up with a quite a bit of lag
-Disconnected from Xbox Live parties for no apparent reason

PC gaming:
Every, and I mean EVERY game I play online, such as Counter Strike 1.6, Battlefield Heroes, and the occasional Quake 3 match, I must put up with bursts of lag. Every 45 seconds to 2 minutes I experience a short burst of lag that lasts around 5 seconds, usually resulting in my death.

Every Day PC use:
-Youtube video load times range from slow, to fast but stopping all together half way through.
-Internet browsing will be somewhat fast, but occasionally experience short bursts of slow down and disconnection (similar to when gaming on my PC)

I know for a fact that it isn't any of the hardware. The router is brand new, and works great when I'm not experiencing the problems above, the internet adapter for my PC is new as well, works great and has almost nothing but good reviews. My mother has similar problems to the ones listed under Every Day PC use.

My problems must be caused by my internet provider. I currently have Verizon DSL, and I probably need something better. What do you recommend?
I have Verizon DSL and I've never had a problem with speed, even though the max rate is around 90kbps. Try talking to your Verizon provider because you maybe be on the edge of their coverage area which is why you maybe getting lag. Otherwise, get a job and upgrade.

Wow I feel really sorry for some of the users of this site. If it helps I use one of the new Airport Extreme routers and I always have really good performance on it. My ISP is Cable One, I doubt that they are available in your area, but I have always had good luck with Cable internet.

Here is one example of Cable One speeds:

A couple things you can try, and please correct me if I am wrong, but you could try switching your DNS servers to Open DNS, this helped a lot when I was using my DSL connection. You could also try using this website: http://www.ispgeeks.com/wild/modules.php?name=RouteTest which will allow you to check and see where along the line your internet is receiving such a high ping, I haven't tested extensively though and I am unsure if this works like I think it does.

Oh and this is just sad:

Urgh...

BTW this is on a strange cell phone tower based wireless ISP. My ping's pretty good considering.
