Sorry bout another one of these threads guys, but I have quite specific problems... I've been playing on the PC, if that affects any opinions at all.

I hated Fallout 3. It was ugly, bleak, boring and I hated having to scrounge for ammo and food which was going to irradiate me anyway. I LOVE exploration in games, it was one of the reasons I bought Fallout, but it is literally all the bloody same. Ruined city, brown wasteland, stony wasteland, junkyard, ruined bridge. Not that I don't like empty and open landscapes, it was just so ugly (which, I understand, is the point).

I'm a hugely aesthetically driven guy, and from the videos I've seen Oblivion's landscape looks absolutely stunning, it's a kind of place I could spend countless hours exploring without ever going into a town. I had no inclination with Fallout to do so because it was so ugly. Also, I'm not a big fan of RPGs, but Oblivion looks like it has just the right amount of RPGness without getting too monotonous and boring. Am I right in this assumption?

Also, a lot of the creatures look ugly and bland, but I can get past that if I can wander alone for the most part, maybe stopping off to kill a wolf or goblin or two, or go fetch a certain kind of leaf for the local drug dealer for a handful of coins :)

Also, is the melee combat much like in Fallout? Because that was pretty bad, especially in first person. I do intend to play in third person for the most part :p

Please help!! :)

Also, I'm sorry, I have no idea how I posted this in Off Topic... Just carelessness on my part I guess.
Oblivion is a much more bright prospect generally but smaller.
There are animals in the world (and there are mods to add more and give them more natural behaviors), since there are no guns or radiation theres no real scrounging to do but there is foraging for herbs etc.
Oblivion has more RPG aspects than Fallout did by far. Applying armor, rings, scrolls, sword, helmet, greives, boots, what spell will you use? etc. so if you don't like rpg's I don't think Oblivion will be right for you.
As for combat... well lets just say that Fallout had a better system.

As several people have already pointed out, the leveling system is absolute garbage. However, the game does possess a wide variety of scenery (what you're looking for.) If you plan to get it, grab the Game of the Year edition for the extra DLC, install a mod that changes up the leveling system, and you should have fun.

Digi7, Bruma is on the opposite side of the map to Anvil, in the mountains. That's all kind of rugged ice and snow covered land, and nearby is Cloud Ruler Temple, which you can see for miles from if you have the visibility set to high. Anvil is a harbour town on the coast and it's surrounding landscape is grassy plains and woodlands. Between the two there's everything from small winding tracks through dense forests to the wide empty plains of the Colovian Highlands. I like exploring in Oblivion so I know some of the more interesting landscape.

There is a mod for Morrowind that makes the graphics much more better and shinier and it also increases the draw distance a lot. Although you'll need a good computer to be able to use it.

You would hate it if you hated fallout 3. The environments are prettier in it (not graphics wise but aestetically) but they arent very varied on Cyrodil (Forest, mountain, snowy mountain)the combat is stickier and at least 4 times worse in third person because the camera just wont behave (making huge leaps whenever you do so much as take a step back) and if your anything like me (dear god why would you be, are you a lunatic?) then you probably wont appreciate how god-awful the animations for everything are and have to resort to playing in first person mode.

I hated Fallout 3 for all those same reasons, but absolutely loved Oblivion.

I found that fallout seemed empty and void of things worth exploring, the shooter aspect was sub-par and the game was just uninteresting to me. I ended up playing it for a mediocre 6 hours then shelfing it forever.

Oblivion was great, the quests were fun and varied (as long as you stay away from the main plot) and there was always something to do, someone to see, something to find...

My only problem with it was that if you wanted you could beat the game without leveling up... Everything could be done at level 1 (all locks picked, max stealth ect.)

But I'm not big fan of guns anyway, especially guns I can only fire twelve times before having to go and root through broken shacks for half an hour. I know about weapon degradation, but that's all fine with me, as long as I can get the gold I need :p
Wait. I'm perplexed by this quote. While I am only just playing F3:GotY for the first time now and enjoying it mostly. I've gone all the way through the main quest and gobs of side quests and the one thing I would not complain about is lack of ammo. Lack of flour, toy cars sometimes, Quantum Nuka Cola, and especially bobby pins, I might complain about, but not ammo. I have scads of ammo and it's all weightless, so collect it all, shoot what you want, sell the rest. I mean, this isn't STALKER where blooming everything counts against your weight allowance. Do you prefer some unique weapon, like only mini-nukes?

Note: there is ALOT wrong with F3. The numerous broken quests and game triggers come to mind. This seems particularly egregious since this is the GotY edition which one would think might have been patched by now.

Speaking of starving for bobby pins, I actually feel a strange compulsion to grab them when I take out my daughter's hair and find one or two in there. My survivor's voice (in my head) says "Sweet! Bobby pins!"

I need help.

Oblivion was one of those games that gets an unfair wrap.

Oblivion was one of the first action role playing games to do what it did. You have to give the guys at Bethesda props. Does it play well? Well, at the time it kinda did. Today it doesn't and the leveling system is the thing that really kills it for me.

Oblivion is very similar to Fallout 3. Swap an apocolypse land for a gigantic forest and you have Oblivion.

How long have you played Fallout? I know my first few hours were hell, but after a bit the game was freakin' amazing.

If you are playing on PC, there are several enviornment/weather mods that make oblivion much more varied and stunning. I actually still play oblivion today for one reason: mods. They add endless hours of extra depth to the game.

I'd say you'd still enjoy it.
It's incredibly cheap now as well, so it's probably worth picking up regardless.

You sound a bit like my friend. Yeah, you'd probably like Oblivion. He did, that's for sure. The environment is much, much prettier to put it simply. Third person view sucks, however, and I'd recommend not using it. Try to get the Game of the Year Edition. You would probably like the visuals of the Shivering Isles. Its the personal realm of the Deadric Prince of Madness, Sheogorath, and the visuals help reinforce that notion quite a bit.

I'd recommend NOT doing the main storyline. If you want the achievements (which you sound like the kind of person who doesn't pursue those) make a character specifically for the main quest, do it, and abandon that character. I'm serious, don't even do the first mission. It creates Oblivion gates all over the map and they can really hurt the aesthetics. Not to mention that at least one of them destroys one of the shrines you need for another quest.

It is the perfect game if you just like to explore or role play. Just don't level up too much if you aren't paying attention to how you do it.

...

All of this coming from a guy who honestly prefers Fallout 3. Go figure.
Oh, and in Fallout 3's defense, it does start out looking fairly ugly and whatnot, but if you give it a while it kinda grows on you. Play the radio while you move. Try to unlock the Agatha's radio station so you can listen to some violin as you explore. It might appeal to you eventually. I don't know. I liked it instantly.

If you're gonna play oblivion, do so on PC so you can maybe influence the game to be more the way you'd like to play it with mods. Because it's not gonna blow your mind after the 9th hour of exploring the same textured forest 15 miles away from anywhere you've been already.

I do like Oblivions leveling system far better since it just works better, you level skills you've been working on, also it doesn't rely on you having points in intto level up your abilities more (HATED that).

Lol dude here's Oblivion in a nutshell, green forest, brown cave, dark dungeon, castle, wash rinse repeat, sure it is more colorful than Fallout which probably causes better feelings as brown, darkness and such colors cause the feeling of despair while green, blue and the like cause feelings of tranquility.

Give it a shot! I'm sure you can get it for next to nothing on Steam, along with the Shivering Isles expansion (which is incidentally hilarious!). Now, Fallout3 is Oblivion with guns, as posted above. However, you have magic instead of guns, which can be incredibly broken (rage spells while on 100% chameleon), or useless. Leveling enemies are horrible, but you can get mods to fix that. The campaign is a joke, basically one long fetch quest, but the Dark Brotherhood questline is honestly one of the best collection of quests I've seen in an RPG. As for graphics, yes, it's quite samey. However, there are a few really beautiful areas, for example south of Skingrad is a pond, waterfall, and an abandoned house, which apparently serve no purpose other than looking nice. There is also the area just north of the marsh in the east, although again, nothing there to see other than exploration.

Oh, one more thing: if you do get, collect paint brushes. Never underestimate the power of the paintbrush...

Dragon Age is good, but it's relatively linear. You CAN explore though.
But..if you like aesthetics, running around without doing anything, and melee combat...
Assassin's Creed 2/Brotherhood would be my recommendation.

Also, a lot of the creatures look ugly and bland, but I can get past that if I can wander alone for the most part, maybe stopping off to kill a wolf or goblin or two, or go fetch a certain kind of leaf for the local drug dealer for a handful of coins :) Ew, Oblivion's creatures are bland. So no, you wouldn't like it in that sense.

Also, is the melee combat much like in Fallout? Because that was pretty bad, especially in first person. I do intend to play in third person for the most part :p Oblivion's combat is mediocre. You have an attack button and a block button, you block until the enemy attacks then attack back, that's about it other than magic and ranged weapons.

Please help!! :)

Also, I'm sorry, I have no idea how I posted this in Off Topic... Just carelessness on my part I guess.
So yeah, I doubt you'll like Oblivion. However, you'll probably like Morrowind because it doesn't have any of those flaws. Varied landscapes and themes, interesting creatures that do different things to you, and a DIFFERENT combat system, everyone will ***** about how they can't hit things, but it makes sense if your Fatigue meter is EMPTY and you're practically about to collapse. Makes sense in my eyes.

Oh, and it has House Telvanni. They kick ass :3

yeah they are too similar, you would not like it at all BUT the new elder scrolls thats coming next year is supposed to have anew game engine that might deliver what you want and or like so i say wait for that and read some reviews and watch some videos to see how it is. In the mean time don't bother, i personally liked it myself but i disliked the leveling system witch i sure hope they fix, it was way to east to level up.

Why yes, playing on PC does make a big difference - I'm glad you asked.

Ive been reading the replies you got, and more seem to say oblivion is just fallout without guns, with little variety etc.

Problem is, console Oblivion (aka vanilla Oblivion) is pretty poor, and is basically just fallout without guns.

But you've mentioned you are on PC, and you my friend are in luck.

After a couple of mods you have what is a masterpiece. The main mod fixes the levelling system and adds a ton of new quests, items, factions etc. - That the OOO (Obsecuro's Oblivion Overhaul).

Then there are mods for literally anything from better textures and graphics (The game is still today one of the most breathtaking beautiful games out there - nothing like sunset over the imperial city), to massive quest story lines, to complete spell, melee and ranged overhauls.

So obviously based on what you've said you'd want, the mandatory OOO mod, some filter/graphics mods, and a melee system overhaul mod. (The melee in Oblivion is much better than fallout 3 tbh anyway.) You can play in third person mode, but it can be difficult when fighting - if this is the case for you - grab a third person camera mod for people who want to play in third person (you're probably getting the idea now)

Aside from that the only other thing I would say that you should get is a mod to disable fast-travel. Fast-travel basically ruins Oblivion.

So I would say yes. Go for it, and its not expensive these days. I'm not sure how some people think that Oblivion is all the same stuff... it's literally got a ton of different landscapes, from snow mountains, to Spanish corn fields. (Not to mention all the other random crap like the madness realm... that place is straight out of alice and wonderland.)

Hope this helped you, if you want some specific recommendations for mods and stuff, just mail me.
