what would you prefer? lots of games which are crap, or few games that are awesome? I take quality over quantity, thus why i love valve so much...
yeah the OP is complaining that valve hasnt released any new series, but other big companies havent really released any thing new either. and valve releases indie games tooJayJayinMay said:uhmmm...indie games?Merkavar said:when was the last time any company released something new. early 90s?Krylock said:When was the last time Valve [http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meanwhile.jpg] announced a completely new series? Sorry, I got the number wrong. But thanks for snipping out the 50 OTHER lines of text I posted along with that.Nintendolover222 said:The fuck is this shit?gamerguy473 said:Half Life 2 took 10 years to develop.Krylock said:When was the last time Valve [http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meanwhile.jpg] announced a completely new series? Now they just announced Portal 2...or should I say Portal: More of the Same."
I mean, at least they could have it on a new engine, but NO!
They have used the same engine for an entire decade.
WOW!
Not to mention they have completely forgotten their best franchise! Hey guys! Remember Dr. Freeman! You know, the whole of Earth and stuff!
There should have been no "episodes" in the first place for HL2, and they should have all come out in the same year considering around five minutes were put into each section.
They are the perfect example of a lazy company, stop using the nasty Source engine, and get their engineers to make something that doesn't have Gamecube graphics.
I give up. I can't be pacified with TF2 updates forever. If Valve doesn't announce Episode 3, or HL3 running on a new engine soon I'm just done with them as a developer.
Actually I think they were done with Ep. 3 a long time ago, Gabe just ate it.
What do you think about the company?
Half-Life 1 came out 12 years ago, Half Life 2 took six years to develop.
Exactly! Valve only hires the best in the business. They have fewer than 100 employees. Look at all the things they did with updates/expansions/mods/and engine changes just this year. They do all that AND develop new games. They work extremely hard, they get things done in their own good time. And when they're done its dammed amazing.Firetaffer said:Do you HONESTLY THINK that they 'gave up' on Half-life? JESUS CHRIST THIS IS SUCH A HIGH-BUDGET STUDIO I REALLY DOUBT THEY WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT JUST TO TROLL THE FANBASE.
At this point, Source may as well be Source 2.JediMB said:Since the Source engine has had several version updates as well, I figured that I might as well count UE2 and 2.5 as the same thing.redisforever said:Technically, it's more the Unreal 2.5 engine. Ugly? Compared to what?
L4D 2

The lighting effects, textures and modelling are clearly inferior to all of the below.... look how that white balcony barely looks pasted onto the wall, and the big blocky 'gamey' looking hands. Ugly.
Other games....

Thanks for your wall of text, but I never said anyone should care about graphics, nor did I say they were more important than gameplay.koriantor said:And why should we care about graphics now? I don't care if L4D2 doesn't look as good as the other games. I mean really, there are a bunch of reasons why this is a GOOD thing for L4D.MiracleOfSound said:Gee, I dunno.... just about every other recent major release.
Funny, I keep hearing this 'graphics don't matter!' argument from the same Valve fanboys who 6 years ago were constantly boasting about how good Half Life 2 looked (and probably bitching that it was coming to consoles).monkey_man said:Besides, Valve games aren't about graphics, they are about gameplay. Which, in my opinion, matters most.
It's not. Despite all the zombies running around, L4D2 is actually quite aesthetically pleasing.MiracleOfSound said:I just pointed out that L4D2 was visually ugly
The word 'ugly' is often used in the gaming community to describe graphics that are sub-par on a technical level, as opposed to an artistic one.JediMB said:It's not. You could argue that the graphics are aged, but not that they're ugly. Different things, and quite subjective, unless you're incapable of judging a picture by anything but technique.
The Assassins Creed one may be slightly touched up but the others are all from gameplay, I'v eplayed all the games there and they're all lookers.Phoenix Arrow said:While I don't disagree with you, you have to remember that L4D2 is a multiplayer game with zombies so you get a massive amount of objects going on at one time and they have to dial it down a tad. That and half the photos you put were pre-rendered.
Which is incorrect, and devalues computer graphics as an art form.MiracleOfSound said:The word 'ugly' is often used in the gaming community to describe graphics that are sub-par on a technical level, as opposed to an artistic one.JediMB said:It's not. Whatever. I didn't start the trend.JediMB said:Which is incorrect, and devalues computer graphics as an art form.
Personally I tend to refer to those people as "graphics whores", but that's me.
Truthfully, I was guilty of thinking that way back when I was 14-15, and Quake II was still hot shit.MiracleOfSound said:Whatever. I didn't start the trend.JediMB said:Which is incorrect, and devalues computer graphics as an art form.

And a 'graphics whore' is someone who places more value on graphics than other aspects.
There are two things wrong with the comment you just posted - for one, if the OP actually did take the time to examine the various previews which have been released regarding Portal 2, then his comment of it being "more of the same" would come off as even more idiotic than it already did, since Portal 2 clearly features not only environmental alterations, but a wide array of new gameplay mechanics as well. Anyone who can watch any of those trailers and say "oh yeah, that's just going to be exactly like Portal" is someone I'd rather never have to meet, as they clearly lack the ability to formulate any sort of coherent or rational thought inside their thick skull.Cuy said:Have you ever heard of these amazing things called gaming magazines and previews? Did you know that developers sometimes use these to showcase games before they're released? It's quite amazing, there's actually a site full of trailers called YouTube, you should check it out sometime!SonicKoala said:How can you declare that Portal 2 is just going to be "more of the same"? Have you played the game yet? No, you haven't, and therefore you have absolutely no basis for your claim that it will be "more of the same", and thus that point just makes you look like a troll.
I think more of us are suckers for nice graphics than we care to admit. Hell, I played Far Cry 2 way more than I should have because it was so pretty.JediMB said:Truthfully, I was guilty of thinking that way back when I was 14-15, and Quake II was still hot shit.
True, but they're usually the same people, in my experience.
Personally I really loved playing with fire in Far Cry 2. Of course it's not like I can't appreciate advances in the technical aspects of graphics, since they also open up for gameplay innovations, but for surface alone I'll choose aesthetics over tech any time of the week.MiracleOfSound said:I think more of us are suckers for nice graphics than we care to admit. And I'd bet that the same Valve fanboys now saying 'graphics whores! graphics don't matter!' are the same ones who 6 years ago were boasting to everyone else about how good Half Life 2 looked.
