I willing to bet that your friend has an older 360. Since the OP got a Kinect with it, he probably bought the new 360 model. My friend got the new model when his old 360 kicked it after 3 years. I felt the new model compared to my Elite, the new model runs only half as hot.

If it is the top one, then it is the newest model, the Slim. If looks like the bottom one then it is probably an Arcade or an Elite.

If it is the top one, then your friend's Slim has a major problem if it still feels like melting temperatures, because I have compared the temperatures of my Elite and my friend's Slim after a six hour long game night, and his barely felt warm, while mine felt like a space heater that I could use to keep me warm in the dead of winter.

Hmm, maybe your friend has a defective one or something, because I've had my Elite for a little over two years and yes it gets really hot, but it has never had trouble reading games, and it has been used in quite a few 8 hour play runs.

Does he stand it up vertical or lay it horizontal, because it is suppose be laid horizontal. Sitting it vertical covers up the main ventilation side, plus the disc tray doesn't have anything that holds the disc in when it is put in vertically, which means that the disc has a greater chance of getting jostled about and being bumped out of place and possibly ruining the disc.

On a side question: Your avatar pick wouldn't happen to be the card art from a Magic the Gathering card called Incinerate?

Play games dude, Kinect is a gimmick at the moment, it'll never be as fast or responsive as just using a controller so for now, just play games. If you have a friend on the 360, the co-op campaigns on Left 4 Dead 1&2 are a good start, first time playthroughs on those game with a friend are just insane fun. Then Gears of War 1&2, same deal with a friend.
