"Why are people such assholes?" is almost a hypocritical statement in and of itself. Perhaps instead of being pissed at a bad customer, and then stating that all of humanity is terrible, you could look past one idiot and realize the vast majority of people are pretty alright. Obviously you regard yourself as somewhat good, since you have values you use to judge others - ever think that you're not the ONLY intelligent person?

Christ, I'm sick of these threads, especially from people in retail. We get it, you deal with a lot of idiots.

And I don't care.

This is nothing but a tired juvenile revelation that most people come to realise is full of crap.

I can't help but feel that such an accusation as 'people are assholes' or 'I have no faith in humanity' requires such a profound lack of empathy as to border on the sociopathic. More of an incitement upon the speaker than the subject of their ignorant, arrogant bile.
That's just more proof that I may be a sociopath, because I have found zero reason to have faith in society. The world crumbles apart around people and they are completely oblivious to it, only concerned with their own gain.

One guy's an asshole, so everyone's an asshole? Sure, why not?
Granted that guy sounded like a huge dick, but that doesn't mean everyone is. Take solace in the fact that if he pulls something like that somewhere else, he'll probably get the piss kicked out of him.

I have a good example of a person like that.

He is a good friend of mine and friend of our family but if you spend to much time with the guy, he starts to become inconsiderate and hard to deal with. This happened recently and it went like this.

He, my sister and her boyfriend were all hanging out one night while I was out and about. Not uncommon for him just to be around relaxing at our home. He comes up with the idea to go to McDonald's and that the 3 of them should all good. They decide to go but he says that his car has no gas and the should take my sisters car. She says that is fine but makes him drive (it was later in the evening and a beer or two had been consumed). They drive out to the McDonald's pull up to the drive through and as they are waiting for the next car to move so that they may order. He turns around and utters " So I don't have any money do you think you could get me something?" My sister thought to herself " (I should have known why else would he have had no gas...)" She says fine I will get you something. Then they pull up to the intercom and he places the order.

-Teller
" Hello welcome to McDonald's, may I take your order?"

-Friend
" Hi I would like a Big Mac meal, um super-sized and a quarter pounder on the side."

-Teller
" OK, anything else sir?"

-Friend
" Yes one sec... (turns to sister and boyfriend) what did you guys want?"

(They stare at him with blank faces in bewilderment as how that was his definition of getting him something...)

QFT.

Yes, there are great people in the world. Yes, life isn't innately negative, and looking at things negatively all the time isn't how to go about it. But to go through life blissfully thinking that most people care about you in even the slightest sense is naive.

The world is based on two words: "Shit happens", the only way to enjoy it is after you learned to deal with it.

Eh, some people are that way, but as I think Gandhi said "be the change you wish to see in the world" so it's up to us to not be assholes with the hope that we're preventing stuff like this from happening even if only in a small way. I too am losing (haven't lost yet) some faith in humanity but for different reasons. Just gotta deal sometimes. Also I think you have the right to make someone pay and call them something awful for paying from the tip jar, I mean if he didn't completely pay for something that's to a degree theft.

Looking over this forum a decent number of you guys are berating the OP, only further proving his point that people are assholes. I agree his use of a sweeping generalization might be over-exaggerating things but you're not going to convince him otherwise if you come off sounding rude too.

Oh no?

What? You unfairly dismissed all of us based on the actions of few, what do you expect us to say/do?

In honesty though, it's not a big deal.

and sometimes you live in an area where absolutely everyone hates and despises you, and you are completely isolated from others, with no one wanting to talk to you in real life except for family and one person besides. are people assholes to you then? no? maybe sometimes a lack of empathy is the only way to cope with a childhood like that, even to this day as an awkward quiet teenager? oh wait, could i perhaps be making an autobiographical statement? no, of course not, i'm just trying to feel superior, aren't i? silly me, i'll go and play guitar for people while rainbows shoot out my ass.

You, sir, have clearly never worked a day in your life. From what you've said here, I can gather your probably some 12 year old boy trolling the forums for kicks. Well, there's no place for asinine tripe here. People CAN be assholes, and if you didn't rely on mommy for a living, you'd know that. The OP is just venting, don't be a fuckin' asshole about it. Stop trolling and gtfo.
If we replaced the OPs claim of "humanity" and changed it to "a certain race in humanity" would you argue the same? Certainly not. The OP is the child in this, attributing the actions of one person to all of humanity. Then demanding that humans sympathize with them. Right...
I guess but can you honestly say at no point in your life you never thought you had no faith in humanity,The OP is probably young and had a bad day and just wanted to feel like someone cared maybe he's being a little mellow dramatic about it but hell don't tear him down He's not the bad guy tear down the asshole who didn't pay he is the bad guy
Honestly: Mayble. Until I learned about Norman Borlaug. Then it debunked it.

Requiring a profound lack of empathy as to border on the sociopathic... Perhaps you have described me, although I think to have faith in humanity at large shows a profound lacking in judgement and the understanding of humanity. We are cheats liars and scum, one and all. Everyone has lied, everyone has cheated at something and everyone will do what they think is best for themselves. Now for most people that means pretending to be nice and abiding the civil laws established by governments... for the rest... Yah, I have no empathy.

That was easy. Got any other ones you'd like me to take care of?

While your example is pretty weak, I do very much agree that the human race has yet to reach what it could be, mainly to societal degredation in major areas of the world. But it's not like it matters. The human race will most likely be wiped out in some catastrophic event. And life will, eventually, go on.

Got to say, it would take a bit more than some guy diving into the tip jar to make me write off every single individual on the planet as being irredeemably evil...

But hey, that's the beauty of different standards of proof and proportions I guess. How exciting a world of evildoers to combat must seem!

I was pretty much surrounded by assholes all the time in my 14 years of experience, and those few that were good people gave me a lot of hope and faith that humanity is not that bad.
