Wow, that sounds cramped. How quickly was the first capital conquered?

Oh, and congrats, Lord knows I'll be lucky to win on anything above King.

Very nice!

I JUST finished a LONG game.

I played boudica and was trying to peacefully spread my religion on a large epic pangaea map. It just wouldn't take! Byzantium and india were spreading theirs like crazy, and the byzantines were beating me to a number of wonders-- so I cut a swath through their empires and removed them from the map. The austrians fell to my artillery in almost no time, trapped as they were with their backs against the mountains. That left Siam-- a wonderous nation that had already engulfed the ethiopians and most of america, and were locked in brutal combat against the spaniards. They unexpectedly denounced me. Big mistake.

The all-out nuclear war took about 10 years to wind down, with a front line that must have been about 40 tiles long. In all, about 15 atomic bombs were lobbed between Siam and myself, but I had taken the early preparations and had my troops ready to make use of the holes I was opening in their lines. I lost most of my airforce when they simultaneously nuked two of their previously controlled cities, but it was all ok: their capital was mine, and their enormous empire split in two.

Finally, the last empire with a capital was Isabella. She didn't like it when I nuked a city of Siam's on her border (it used to be hers) so she declared war.

Silly.

Two nukes to barcelona, three nukes to Madrid, and the tanks swept up the corridor and took posession of the entire irradiated earth.

Yay!

Hmm, I remember playing lots of Civilization 1 and Colonization on old 486, but didnt like Civ 4 much. Is Civ 5 worth it?

Congrats, it sounds like an impressive feat. I tend to get 50/50 win loss results on King level. They did up the AI significantly in the expansion, and I imagine the AI handicap is huge on that level.

Maybe. Civ5 is a subject of much disagreement, some think it is the best others don't like it at all. If you decide to get it you should get the Gods and Kings expansion as well, because it improves the game leaps and bounds. It is very different than Civ4 so you may like it.

I didn't care much for Civ 4, having started on Civ 1 myself. The key aspect that made it unfun was the so-called Stack of Doom-- theres only one strategy allowable in civ 4-- build stacks of doom in order to counter everyone elses'. No playing a peaceful builder, or a scientific state, or a even a religious or cultural nation-- nope, 90 units will eventually barrel in and crush you.

The key difference of Civ 5 is that two units cannot occupy the same space. This makes taking cities a much more complicated endeavour, as if theres some mountains and hills nearby, you can't GET up against the city to take it!

Prior to gods and kings, i would have said civ 5 is not worth it.

Now, I think its great.

Congrats man! I've hardly played Civ 5 but I did enjoy it. I could probably get into it, but that's extremely impressive! Especially nuking Greece, which has made me more inclined to buy it.

EDIT: It's £10 on Steam, now I make the tough decision between Civ, or the Dark Knight Rises...

Hey, thats not bad. I mean, I'm sure I could do better though. Sometimes, when I want a challenge I play on chieftan.

...Yeah, ok, I'm actually pretty crap at that game. I still enjoy it though. Seriously impressive work there, congrats!

i honestly never play civ on the harder settings since i enjoy it well enough on the Prince/king level and just don't have the time anymore to wade through the harder stuff just for the challenge anymore.
and your work is pretty impressive, i did this kinda thing in the past and really loved the challenge

TO STEAM, buying god and kings

there are easy ways to beat Civ 5 on that high of a difficulty, but 22 on a duel sized map is not it, congratulations, great victory!!

I would agree with this, my friend and I (who have played likely thousands of hours of civ between us ) We hated vanilla civ 5 but gods and kings has turned it into a new and better game. We haven't gone back to civ 4 BTS since.

My only gripe is that there seems to be a lack of nations and leaders compared to civ 4. Would love to see two different leaders for each nation and some new ones like the goths from Europe for example or Mexico for another.

I'm thinking of getting into this series, and with the Steam sales it doesn't seem like there's a better time to start. Which one would you recommend I get (3, 4 or 5)?
I noticed Civ3 is very cheap on Steam right now. Admittedly I haven't played it in a long time and I don't remember exactly how ugly it is by modern standards, but it is a very good and traditional part of the series.

Civilization V is also very cheap at the moment, and may be a good bet for new players.

Quick questions:

Which wonders did you manage to get?
Were you able to found a religion?
How many techs did you steal?
How many friends were you able to maintain?
How did you defuse early wars with so many AIs breathing down your neck?

Reminds me a bit of the time in Civ1 where I dominated the world before building my first city. I got REALLY lucky and found several skilled mercenaries. I only had 3 civs to go up against, but I dare you to duplicate that win.

Kudos to you OP. That is incredible playing.

Did you record it? That sounds like a REALLY interesting game.
I don't know how :(

All I could do is save one turn from the end for "proof".

unless the expansion massively overhauled the AI then honestly it really isnt that special. civ 5 has a very poor and predictable AI, it is probably much much harder to actually beat deity on a huge map with only a few opponents then a small with lots because they wont screw each other over and you cant really win through taking advantage of diplomacy.

also dont play with water, even though the expansion improved it apparently. the AI sucked so bad at naval you could wipe out entire civilizations with a couple of ships

if you can do a larger map with only a few opponents with very little water.... that would be impressive
The expansion totally overhauled it. Small maps with lots of water are very difficult now. The issue with small landmasses is that one good war between the AI can generate a dominant civ (as it did in this game where Greece conquered two civs by 1 AD).

My setup was as hard as I could make it, though I also like smaller maps because the game doesn't take a week to play out!

Quick questions:
Happy to answer! :D

Which wonders did you manage to get?
In terms of unique wonders, just Stonehenge (a must, see below), Terracotta Army (AI doesn't show much interest in building this), Notre Dame (another must), Taj Mahal, Hagia Sophia and Big Ben. My Egyptian wonder building edge really only mattered to get Stonehenge first, which on Deity must happen or you will almost certainly lose.

At the end, other civs were building wonders way before I could. The Chinese had 10 wonders, all endgame ones (they had one amazing city).

Were you able to found a religion?
Yes, and I consider this essential to winning past Emperor level. I took all the building upgrades (mosques, cathedrals, etc.) I could, and the "30% combat bonus in your own territory" one, which is also essential.

How many techs did you steal?
5 in total. It takes a LONG time to steal a single tech on Deity and spies dies fast.

How many friends were you able to maintain?
Haha :D ... zero. I was barely able to keep neighbors from attacking me, and at one point was at war with 14 nations at once. No allied city states either (they either get blown out early or making friends with them is too costly, it also leads to AI attacks).

How did you defuse early wars with so many AIs breathing down your neck?
I cycled troops in and out of forward spots and had to let the AI come within city range a lot. I did lose troops, and sometimes thought the wars would be the end of me.

One very lengthy war with the Ottomans to my south was a turning point though. I beat back their initial assault and established good forward defensive positions, leading to something of a stalemate. Eventually they (and the Russians to my east) offered standard 10 turn peace treaties. I thought about it and turned them down, which was counterintuitive, but I was taking a gamble that they would become war fatigued and offer me stuff later if they continued not to win the war.

Sure enough the Russians offered a huge deal (oil furs, iron, gems, 1,500 gold) and eventually the Ottomans offered the best deal I have ever seen (oil, copper, and a staggering 24,000 gold, when I had about 800 in the bank).

That deal changed everything, as I was able to use all that oil to buy a killer old-war Bomber fleet (15 planes) and take over the Russians later. Immediately (after riots subsided) I was able to rehabilitate their capital city using gold. Then I took the two big Ottoman cities with the same plan, going from 2 great cities to 5 in two wars.

And I was STILL waaaay behind Greece (and behind two other nations). The nukes eventually solved that with Greece, though I had to start another war just to get my cruisers into position to send the nukes (which was awesome)!
