I've rage quitted and slammed desks during that one part in Super Meat Boy, never actually thrown a controller before. Suppose it's because I mainly play PC games.
It seems that the two pieces of a game that people get mad at are:
A) lag in a multiplayer game (or, insane as it seems, a single-player one)
or B) a challenge that they can't complete, be it due to a lack of skill or a genuinely unfair part of a game
I don't think broken mechanics piss people off so much as they just turn a person off the game. If something is really broken, I have never heard of someone just angrily continuing with the game. Personally, I just put the controller down and say "This is incredibly stupid."
I remember one time I saw my brother throw the PS2 controller at the floor. He was standing on it, and it was hung over his elbow or something (don't really remember the specifics). Anyway, when he threw it, it bounced back on the cord and hit him in the face. Gave him a black eye. Funniest (and weirdest) accident I've ever seen.
I've only once launched a controller, and that was by accident. Playing one of the Ace Combat games (AC 04 I believe) with a dodgy controller which spazzed out and hurled the plane into the ground. I throw my arms up in a "WHAT" gesture and the controller slips out of my hand, bounces off the wall and smacks me in the back of the head.
Never thrown my controller. What I do when I get mad is that I instead try to crush the controller, pushing both my hands together as hard as I can. Controllers even now-a-days are really sturdy, and can take a whole lot of damage it would seem.
Maybe if I still played console systems. I only play PC now and don't really get that angry at games like I did when I was a silly child. Though, World of tanks can try my patience sometimes with the no damage "critical" hits. That glitch drives me nuts if it causes me to die. -_-
As somebody who genuinely suffers from rage issues I find the idea that you'd let yourself get that angry makes you come across as petulant and kinda pathetic :/.
Although I am biased about this because of my forever loved little brother and his habits for throwing things :/.
playing Mass Effect multiplayer yesterday, three games in a row I was kicked off the sever with less than a minute to go. I screamed "fuck it!" threw the controller, which bounced nicely and hit the cat, the cat isn't talking to me and my controllers broke!
I tend to curse at the game more than throw controllers/handhelds. Though one of the few times I have was when I chucked my DSlite and the wall during the Beelzebub fight in Devil Survivor becasue of those stupid goddamn flies he summons.
The Ops in Old Republic. They have a combo move that disables you and then they can spam their shiv attack to the point where if it doesn't kill you there next attack will. This is all before you ever get a chance to counter attack. (if you don't have a break CC ability to activate) Oh and they have a stealth ability so you don't even see them coming.
Drives me nuts, you can take them out, but the only way I've found is to disable them and hit them with everything I got then run like hell.
Yes, but I've gotten smart about it. I'll grip the controller like hell and scan quickly around for something with sufficient cushioning to throw it against. if I don't find something, hopefully the deathgrip will be enough to prevent easy, natural release from my hand.
And this is a big part of why I don't do much online competitive multiplayer. I want to avoid those ridiculous bursts of anger where things are liable to get thrown. There's a part of me that realizes it's an over-reaction but unfortunately, it doesn't always speak up loud enough.
The only controller I've ever thrown was a PS3 one while I was playing Wipeout. I'd never thrown one before, and never will again. I threw it down at my bed, it bounced, smacked into the hall, and it is now held together with tape. Oddly, even though I have a spare, it's the controller I prefer to use...
Well me and my friend were once playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 and I was destroying him in a space battle, he got so mad he threw his controller into the tv (please note this is an old tube tv) Controller bounces off and hits him square in the nose.
