I like the new My Little Pony show. Is it really that weird?

this has been showing up a bit on TFW2005 due to the tangential connection to Transformers, and truthfully, it looks like a really creative show. the animation has this deranged quality that I appreciate, although I'm more interested in Young Justice at the moment.

While I'm still waiting for my balls to return from the Embassy of Men, I must admit that while the morals are -cringe worthy-, and the set-ups in the episodes are very simple, the jokes are at times very clever and the personalities of the characters are fairly consistent.

It's a cute watch if you have nothing else to do, but it's nothing you won't regret if you haven't watched it.

That said... it's adult enough to make us 20-30 year olds go "huh, they did that joke?", while being kid friendly enough to be worth Hasbro's expense.

OK I'm a girl yes. Here is a little summary of my life. I was one of those girls that hated playing with dolls i had cars and ninja turtles. I loved climbing trees and got in trouble for bringing bugs and lizards home all the time. I hated the girly shows ...I can't remember ever watching any show or cartoon aimed at girls...except for MLP. I had so many MLP toys it was like I had a double personality. When we moved away I was forced to give away my extensive pony collection and it was not till a few years ago that I started hunting for the 80s pony toys. the 90-s ones i hate and I hate how the 2010 versions look. But the show has been interesting in the 80s and it looks even better right now. sure the characters look totally different but the show is awesome. It was more than I ever expected when I saw the first episode.
I used to watch all the cartoons aimed at boys.. and still do. No one complains if a girl watches boy cartoons. Why woudl it be bad for guys to watch girl cartoons if its fine for the ladies to watch boy cartoons. Besides... if you were ok with watching Charlie the Unicorn.. why not MLP.

So for the past couple of weeks I've been quite enthralled with Friendship is Magic, the new My Little Pony series. I'm really, genuinely enjoying the show but I've been noticing a lot of people calling people (specifically 20 to 30-year-old men) who watch the show "gay" for doing so.

Why?

The show is amazingly well written (especially for a My Little Pony series), beautiful visually (seriously, this show is probably the best use of Flash outside of The Secret of Kells), and has great depth in its characters. It's exactly what most people ask for when they say they want good cartoons.

So why are people so virulent against a well-written, well-animated, funny and enjoyable My Little Pony series but praise (and I'm pulling out a completely random name here) the god-awful Transformers movies?

Why?
Why do people hate The Bieb, or Twilight (despite some good reasons)? Cause it's cool to hate things little girls like, it makes insecure men feel secure, there is "nothing more manly than hating everything your daughter likes". If you like it you're just more of a man than Master Chief.
Twilight, despite its horrid moral messages to girls, is at its heart an (awkwardly handled) love story. Bieber sings about vaguely sexual but mostly romantic interest in girls. Girls at the age where boys become interesting are of course more likely to like him. Everyone else, who either doesn't care for love or is mature enough to understand that love isn't that simple, will merely dismiss them.

I see this as a problem of demographics. If you aren't in the targeted demographic of a particular singer, movie, TV series, etc., you have a free license to dislike it, regardless of its merits.

I will make a bold statement here: the bashing of girls' media more often than not stems from an underlying sexism present in society. Think about it: when was the last time you heard a girl get insulted for enjoying "manly movies" like Transformers or Die Hard or 300? Now when was the last time you heard a guy get insulted for enjoying "chick flicks" like Sex in the City or Jane Austen movies or the romantic comedy of the month.

It's a pretty obvious double standard once you start looking for it. Male-oriented media can be enjoyed by everyone but, ironically enough, men are not allowed to enjoy media outside their demographic.

All I know is, the purple one looks like Stocking (my avatar)
Yeah I see what you mean by the purple one looking like Stocking. I haven't seen the series but I've heard its good. Though I would say the Purple Pony's colour reminds me of the purple Hummer we have downstairs in the garage.

To the OP: I ain't judging I know nothing about the series so I'm just going to assume you like it. Good for you.

Been seeing ads on TV and while I never actually watched it I cant help but go "Awww" on the pony's designs. I'll check it out sometime.

I just now noticed that all the shows on the Hub channel(were this airs) are either remakes of old 80's cartoons or reruns of old shows and they are all oddly not bad.

I think one of the reasons why I like this series so much is that the gags and jokes are actual gags of jokes with punchlines that actually follow through a setup. No lolrandumb humor, digs or mocking of the previous generations, or meta humor.

I wish the animation was better because there are errors EVERYWHERE. They're not immediately obvious and have an Easter egg feel to them, but they are in large abundance. It's like Christmas, but instead of presents or underwear, they're number-tagged ponies, fifth legs, inner-thigh cutie marks, and lazy copy and pasting that makes shit backwards. The last two could probably have been avoided if Hasbro weren't cheap fuckasses and sprung for something better than the crash-proned memory-hog Flash 8, which cannot even paint over flipped symbols, leading to inner-thigh cutie marks on more than one occasion.

Real men wear pink and no one has the nerve in person to call them on it.

Chuck Norris watches my little pony, and ain't fraid of nothing.

But seriously I never though as a grown adult male I would think the new My Little Pony series was good, but it is.

Ok we seem to have an issue with other user admitting they watch the show. So here is list of excuses so that you can use so that you don't lose any so called manliness from telling the truth.

1. I have a sister
2. The show is done by Lauren Faust and I liked her shows The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary
3. I am waiting for apocalypse ponys to show up (There is some truth to this)
4. Seth Green watches the show so I want to see why he dose.
5. I was babysitting and I watched the show.
6. The show is good.
7. The show has good animation.
8. I watched it when I was little.
9. I was board.
10. I like bright colors.

Apparently he went to Hasbro to pitch the apocalypse pony?s toyline.
I doubt the apocalypse ponies would show up on the show unless if it is done in a parody in a way. Now I am dreading if Robot Chicken do a sketch on MLP FiM unless it's a joke about manly men refusing to watch it.

EDIT- I would actually like to see the apocalypse ponies in FiM style even if Lauren drew them sinisterly.

Actually, a lot of somewhat older males (by "older," I mean post-elementary school) seem to like it. Something about the series seems to appeal to a lot of people outside the little girl demographic, so no, I wouldn't say it's weird.

Throw me into the pile of burly old men who were quoted in saying,

"What is this gay shi--HOLY CRAP, THIS SHOW IS AWESOME [http://fillydelphia.tumblr.com/hellyeah]."

But I guess that's to be expected of the talent behind Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends.

Granted, the 30 second intro which heralds back to the original vapid series is rather hard on the nerves but, with the magic of the fast forward button, you can vault it, ponily.

I shall require a second season, to these ends I will mastermind a hostile takeover of Hasbro. I just need to secure the capital... I will apply for an entry level barrista position immediately.

So I have indeed noticed all the fuss people have been making about this cartoon lately. Additionally I think all those pony avatars and such Gifs are simply delightful, I have always had a soft spot for ridiculously cute things.

In fact I was so amused by the parody of MLP posted here that I watched an episode, and I feel the only way to justly describe the experience is by proudly stating that my mouth is now riddled with cavities on account of the sweetness. I find it ironic that the amusement inspired by something making fun of the show actually resulted in me watching it and thoroughly enjoying myself, the Benny Hill Chase reference made me pause and smile.

Speaking as being only just exposed to the material in question I have to say the following. The visuals were indeed stunning, and the art was cute and cuddly, while feeling fluffy and sweet. The characters are about as well developed as one could hope, each embodying a facet of the modern female. Twilight is probably my favorite for not being a cookie cutter stereotype, also I have a thing for the Gothic chick and she gives me that sorta vibe.

It is hard for me to critique it because of just how much fun it was to watch, and the childish nostalgia it made me feel, but I have a few issues that may or may not be linked to my Y chromosome. Firstly it was infectiously cute, even the bad guys, so it was kinda hard to take seriously, even in the mindset of a child. The characters themselves are sweet to a fault, and conduct themselves with the same uncanny consideration of the Brady Bunch. The mythos is piled on thick, but it somewhat breaks the illusion when you realize this show is in fact a very well constructed commercial.

In closing, I liked it, and the fact that I sympathized with the only frequently occurring male character, "Spike", the dragon, who commonly complains of things being too frilly and girly but ultimately enjoys himself all the same, was a clever bit of writing on behalf of the creators. It is for this reason, that the show features a male character surrounded and at times suffocated by the femininity of the affair, who at times both likes and dislikes the arrangement, that I personally believe not only is it OK for Boys to watch this show, but it was intended by the creators.
