I do not respect Stephanie Meyers because she has not earned my respect. Yes, she may have used language and themes that were perfectly suitable for her target audience (the almost illiterate, angst filled teens). However, this does not excuse her writing quality. I'd rather murder someone than admit that a book that uses sentences like "I am sad." She said sadly. can compare to the great works of literature.
Never said it was as well written as a classic. But I think it was written well, if simply.

Personally, the fanbase is what makes me sick. I also think the books aren't particularly well made, nor are the movies, but you're entitled to your own opinion.

So what you are saying is. Since her target audience is a bunch of fucking retards its okay that she just stole every single part of her books from far better authors without even trying to link her "plot points"?

No. Just no.
Please report to the concentration re-education camps for sterilising processing.

And as for the Mercedes whatever books. Yes, they are shit but they are relatively unknown compared to Twilight.
In fact most urban fantasy is utter horseshit but Twilight is the biggest fish in that foetid, open sewer pipe of a pond so it attracts the most hatred.
I am seriously going laugh in the face of the next person who claims that The Escapist is more intelligent or more enlightened or whatever. This website has about as much intelligence and tolerance for different ideas as an amoeba in an SS uniform.

I'm not saying that they are amazing, or even great. But I don't believe that they are so poorly done as to be hate-worthy.

It's the internet, don't expect too much. But I see a lot more of insanity and insults on other forums than I do here, which is why I started this discussion here.

Monsters arent supposed to.....u know what, why even bother...its not gonna change ur opinion or of the slightly pudgy tween girls hitting puberty who wear hot topic because theyre not comformists buying clothes from a chain store even though it looks like covered themselves with glue and jumped into a pile of neon rags and shin high boots. All im saying is the black and white 1961 dracula is one of my favorite vampire stories and this stuff is fucking my shit up.
And if ur a guy.......i miss harry potter....(gunshot)......still here, just kidding.
Is coherence too much to ask? That said and all joking aside, dracula style vampires are awesome, but if anyone wrote books about them, we would all scream "RIP-OFF", so I'm glad that meyers did something new.

Well OP, you kind of said the reason that I don't like them, I am not the target audience. I am an adult male not a teenage female. These books, and films, weren't made with me in mind so they are not for me.

Am I angry about this? No. There are plenty of books and films out there that I do enjoy, let people that enjoy these works enjoy them.

Do I believe they are poorly written? Well, I haven't read them myself, again they are not something I'd enjoy at all. People whose opinion I respect when it comes to books have said they are poorly written though, but I can't say either way as I've only seen the first film and had 3rd party exposure to the rest.

The only real trouble is when people start trying to shove something you don't like down your throat, in the belief that enough of it will make you like it. This. Will. Not. Happen. Fortunately I deal with very few (rabid) fans of the series, so this doesn't affect me much.

I know it's the Internet. I just take it upon myself to remind the rest of the Escapist that they're no better then the rest of the Internet because they seem to be under the very very false impression that they are. ...and maybe in some small way actually inspire them to be better than the rest of the Internet.

That last part is wishful thinking I know, but hey I can dream.

The escapist is better, but thats kinda like being more religious than an atheist. Not much of an accomplishment. At least, the escapist is better in my experience.

my problem is that why vampires and werewolves? does she have some list of mythical blood hungry savage monsters to rip off? she could have made some new creature, thats what fantasys for, either build off the old or make the new, not cover the old with sparkles and romance. and the main reason twilight is a hate topic is because very few of these fantasy romance rip offs (i refuse to call them anything else) have achieved such fame as twilight has. seriously, 2 movies that got thousands of views on their screen day and has somehow managed to spread its influence to the far corners of the entertainment industry. its hard for people to not hate something when it becomes so present in every day life, this is why i hate "pop rock" (aka, hannah, gaga, jonas, etc.)

I don't like it cause the whole thing comes off as a negative influence to the audience it targets. It's also a bit of a run around because it's soft core porn being treated as an actual story.

The biggest reason people hate it is because it has attracted massive attention and deserves none of it. I don't care about normal vampires. But I kinda respect the source material on what makes a vampire a vampire. IE: being a more superior version of a zombie with a bat theme. And it almost seems completely absent that making out with a corpse that feast on the blood of the living is disturbing.

That and the characters are total jokes. The main character is a paper thin puppet to be replaced by the reader. The other characters like edward are like the manaquins you see in stores. All there is to there existence is to be seen by others for there appearance. If the writing got any worse. And the were lots of spelling mistakes. This would qualify for bad fanfiction.

Once again, none of this would matter if it were not for the fact that it's incredubly popular despite being garbage. Sure you could say that about movies like transformers. In fact you could. I go in to see those movies to see robots beat each other up. Some will read the twilight to get some, I don't even know the apporiate word. Self freak on for a bit of time. And thats fine. It would be kinda nice if the fans of this series had any deceny to not force people who don't like twilight to watch it and read it.

I mean you twilight readers don't make it easy to avoid it for a lot of people who read it. It's all they talk about. And constantly being in the precense of something annoying, makes it harder to ingore.

Classic comedy.
It's gonna beat out Buster Keaton in a few decades.

Actually, I hope not :(

Ok, I will sum up everything very simply.

People hate twilight for a few simple reasons

A) They loved Vampires before Twilight (The Darren Shan books got me through most of my teenage years) and now people think they like Twilight.
B) Connected to A), They can no longer publicly talk about Vampires without seeming to be sexually repressed morons
C) Vampires used to be awesome. Seriously. Drinking peoples blood. Running faster then cars. Turning into bats.
D) The books attack the nature of Vampire mythology without taking anything positive about it into account.
E) They do not fall into the "Teenage Female" demographic and yet they are constantly assaulted with Twilight despite having no interest in it.

F) And this is the big one. We have read real fantasy books. Better books. With characters who are believable, characters you can empathize with and a plot more complicated then a game of tic-tac-toe. Some of us have beloved authors who have failed to capture the media attention. Christ, George R. R. Martin is arguably much better then Tolkien. But tripe like Meyers stuff wins out.

There are probably more, I aint going to attack the fanbase, the hype, the fact that she is a mormon and this infects her writing like Herpes. Those are the reasons I hate Twilight and the reasons my close friends hate twilight.
I understood your reasons but, having read the books and seen the movies, I honestly don't really see it. I have read dozens of "real" fantasy books, and I won't say that twilight is the best, not even close, but it isn't that bad. also, multiple series about the same kind of vampires get boring, I like that she re-interperited the myths to make an original story.

Even if the target audience is a teenage girl, a bad book is a bad book. For instance, all of Dr. Seuss is directed towards children, but they are still fun to read as an adult. The same goes for the Harry Potter series, His Dark Materials, Where the Wild Things Are, etc. Many cartoons are the same.

Also, reinterpreting is not what people are upset at. Christopher Nolan changed Batman for his movies, it worked out fine. But vampires. Do. Not. Sparkle. Or romance teenage girls. No. They bite them.

It's like if when Nolan made Batman Begins, Batman was instead a male model. Who sparkled. And did not fight crime.

Bad is subjective though, so what the hell.
