I Maced a Dragon.

So, playing Dragon Age: Origins and DA 2 recently, I remember something that had bugged me throughout both games.

My warden is excessively powerful. More powerful than even I could have ever imagined. He is possessed of the ability to stab with a mace.
Now I don't know about you, but a mace doesn't make for the best thrusting weapon.
In DA 2 Hawke manages to stab and cut and slice his way through a number of opponents - with a hammer. Made all the more absurd when fighting the boss at the end of Act 2 and you get the cutscene of Hawke finishing him off with a stab (mage excluded).

If there's one thing they need to fix in the Dragon Age series (aside from all the fuckups and lack of established continuity between Origins and 2) it's the goddamn blunt weapon animations.
If you're going to give me a mace, then let me bludgeon damnit.

The ought to take a page out of AssCreed's book.

That game had bitchin' mace animations.

Damn. I totally thought this was going to be a thread about using pepper spray on a dragon.

OT: Same thing happened to me, except with an Ogre, and I was bare handed at the time (mage). I jumped on the ogre and... well, I made a stabbing motion with my hands, but they were empty, so it was both hilarious and silly in an overly dramatic way.

I never used blunt weapons so I did not notice.

Though it would be nice to make the distinction in animations for blunt versus blade. That animation is probably very funny, in a stupid way, while still quite unrealistic and a bit annoying.

Hey, it is better than my character in Origins that went through the prologue naked and punching everyone in the Deep Roads to death :p

yeah, it really makes me wonder why they have either blunt weapons or stabbing animations if they werent going to reconcile them.

asscreed had bitchin' animations all around; the fighting was actually gorier than alot of DAO or DA2 because of how brutal the animations were. the dragon age team really should less time and money on gratuitous blood splatters and more on some proper fighting animations; the series would notably improve with less silly gore and more satisfying animations than slow-as-molasses swings or hyperactive super-sayian attack speed.

The animations were great, however you could still cut people's throats after grabbing them with blunt weapons. My favorite way to do this is with a broom =D

I still can't believe that they don't let us equip the broom as our standard weapon.

Is it just me or was that broom more powerful than most weapons?

I would love to see someone beat the game just using the broom.

Sorry.

And hey! You know what they say: "Anything can cut if you apply enough force".

I think this kind of thing really becomes obvious during such scripted sequences as the slaying of a dragon. When I played DA2 as a two-handed warrior, the animations during each fight worked regardless of if Hawke was using an axe, mace or sword (and he did use all three during my playthrough). Most of the battle consists of swinging the weapon from side to side or over the head so there were no such glaring inconsistencies as trying to stab an enemy with a mace.

"FACE ME SO I MAY STAB YOU WITH MY HAMMER!"...what? I think you're doing wrong.

Animation hiccups are something I usually find amusing, but other times annoying. For example, in Halo 3 after a few playthroughs, I noticed that Master Chief always has an assault rifle in his hands when you were absolutely certain that he used a battle rifle and shotgun for the entire level.

Apparently he keeps an MA5K is his invisible Bag of Holding.

I actually had quite an epic animation glitch in Awakening.
I had shadowform activated and my warden did the killing animation for an ogre, but his body went away from the Aura, so this shadow-based Warden proceeded to slaughter an ogre.
Hella cool.

Then.... completely undone by more Mace stabbing from Anders.

I recall in Gothic, if you wanted to fully kill a downed enemy, you had to perform a finishing move. When doing so, your character would stand over the enemy and then drive the weapon through said enemy's chest and give it a few twists. Needless to say that, when using a blunt object, this seemed incredibly absurd.

Hah, I thought of the exact same thing. What's best is that it wasn't just the animation, the sounds went along as well, so a hammer could make a nifty "shlorck" sound. Good thing in the sequel this only applied to some NPCs, so you could go through the game without using the finisher.

Most games don't differentiate between various weapon types really. Sometimes they deal different types of damage... I guess it would be really cool to see an RPG where different kinds of weapons went with their own animations, special attacks, finishing moves etc.

Yes, I know Screed 2 did that, and it was a great game, but I'm thinking more classic RPGs.

Then again, Baldur's Gate only had three attack animations for all one-handed weapons, and who in their right mind would say it wasn't an enjoyable game?

This kinda thing bothered me about Mass effect 2.

There are several cut-scenes where it shows Shepard shooting enemies with an assault rifle. Why is that odd you ask? Because I rolled an infiltrator, a class that not only isn't trained for that weapon but CANNOT EQUIP IT.
