World of Warcraft.

You can't go wrong with that game.
If wrong means right then I agree! :p
...................anyway.

OT: Theres a good amount of fighting in WoW, along with a very engaging storyline.

You'll have a blast.
Very little storyline to speak of. WoW was a fun game up until lich, but it destroyed the plot from the Warcraft series.

It's their lore, they can do whatever they want with it.

I for one, embrace where the story is going. People like you just reject change.

I am not against the changing of the plot, but what I want is actual story telling in the games. The way the plot progresses in wow is through boss kills, and short quest lines leading up to raid bosses. It is pathetic story telling. The addition of a cinematic sequence after Arthas is defeated is a great start, but they really need to do more.

Bioshock is a good one, you'll have a lot of fun with that, very atmospheric.

Fallout 3 is a very action-heavy RPG, look up the gameplay videos. It's got plenty of action and violence.

I still would suggest the original Fable as well. Lots of fighting and fairly linear.

I have recently finished my dissertation (believe me, if you have ever don one of these you will know how i feel) and i feel i need to reward myself.

Could i have some advice on a game i could buy.

NOT an RPG or turn based.

Set in fantasy world with lots of fighting is what i was thinking but not compulsary.

Good story line is preferable but i want to spend more time enjoying the killing of evil/good rather than endlessly walking round the towns.

I have not played many mainstream games lately so almost anything is a possibility.

for PC

Thanks, i look forward to feedback!
Metro 2033 - FPS, single player only, PC and 360, based on a 2002 Russian Best selling novel by the same name, in development for almost 3 years, comes out March 16th.

I think that fits most of the criteria, go check it out.

Sounds like you'll be eagerly awaiting Diablo 3, and if you odn't mind old games you could always try 1 or 2.
While it may call itself an RPG is has as little to do with RPGs as many FPS, it has leveling and gear, and is set in a fantasy world, but it doens't have the whole dialogue thing, the whole game consists of killing stuff, and teh towns are rally small so you won't have to spend more than 3 min if you had to visit every NPC iwtha function.
