Hello kind, intelligent and handsome folk who come to this thread (All of you). In a little while I am about to go into Manly to get braces fitted. Is there anything I should know, things to avoid, benefits of braces?

Get ready to enjoy not eating apples, gum, etc. for a full year. Also, get ready for scars on the inside of your mouth.

Seriously.

there are no benefits of braces, execpt getting your teeth etraighten i guess. Avoid chewing gum and eating anything sticky. And don't get hit in the face because it cuts up your mouth like you stuffed knifes in there. Thats about it.

This, seriously, whatever you do, don't get punched in the gob. First thing I did when I had my braces removed was have a mars bar. Also, when you have them removed, it will be the weirdest sensation ever.

They straighten your teeth, you can't eat hard or gooey stuff, and they look odd on adults. (no offense to braces wearing adults, but you know its true.)

Well the benefits are pretty obvious, you have straight teeth that 'feel right' in your mouth.

You'll get told most of this when you get them but avoid hard chocolate, boiled sweets, toffee, basically anything that'll stick to your teeth or braces. At best it's uncomfortable and at worst you can rip your brace off so yeah, don't have 'em for a while.

So far as things you should know, all I can think of is to make ABSOLUTELY SURE that you brush your teeth and braces properly. Bits of food can get caught behind the wire and other bits of metal and, if not brushed away, you'll get ugly brown stains on your teeth in the shape of braces. Oh, if your dentist/orthodontist has them, get a special toothbrush for people with braces, they're a life saver. Also, no mechanical toothbrushes, learnt that the hard way.

One last thing as a heads-up, your braces can catch on your lips something mean sometimes. I don't know if everywhere does this but ask for some wax after you get them fitted if they don't give you any. Make a small ball of wax in your fingers and apply to the part of the brace grieving you (if it happens, you'll know exactly what I mean).

Other than that, braces really aren't so bad. Like before, I don't know if everywhere does this but I could have my braces a different colour every time I had them tightened or checked up so be creative and have fun with them!

EDIT: Damn, everyone else got there before me with quicker, shorter posts :/

Avoid eating apple skin, if they don't tell you that already. That stuff gets stuck in the braces horrifically. Always peel the apple before you eat it.

I ate gum when I had braces. No big deal

But yeah, avoid injury because shit'll hurt like a ************ inside your mouth.

Also, when your finally getting them removed, get ready to learn what grinded teeth smell like.

(Spoiler, it smells like burning hair.)

Okay, seriously though, Braces aren't that bad, there difficult too have when you first get them on, and difficult when you get them off, but the stuff inbetween isin't really that bad, save for the occasionaly painful day.

Make sure you brush the fuck out of your teeth. If you're lax with your oral hygiene while you've got braces, you'll end up with some extraordinarily sexy permanent crud marks on your teeth.

Ignore them and go about what you normal business. Unless your normal business is beating the ever loving crap out of people. If so stop that you will not get any friends.

When you first get them installed your teeth will be HYPER SENSITIVE for a few days. I couldn't even drink water without it feeling like someone was pouring acid on my teeth.

Take an advil before you go. And if a tooth feels strangely loose after a new wire is put in, it is going to be the area that hurts most.

And if they tell you to wear some rubber bands, for God's sake, DO IT AS THEY SAY. By the time I get mine off early next month I'll be more than a year overdue.

Get some wax to stop the brackets from catching inside your mouth so much.
Other than that, take more time brushing your teeth, and get a gumshield for any sports you're doing.

They're not too bad at all. Makes you eat A LOT less crap in my experience. I barely eat sweets or drink fizzy stuff (beer excluded) since I had them put it. They make your teeth hurt like hell and make eating very painful for the first few days after fitting and tightening at later dates but it's short lived and bearable.

Also, you get to choose what colour they are. I change it every time I go but at the moment I've got purple and red.

I had them when I was younger. For about...4 months, I think. Which was strange, because my teeth were terrible, and my friends that had them seemed to have them much longer, despite going into it with much straighter teeth.

The worst part by far was the retainer that you wear to bed for a few months after. Every morning that you remove that thing your mouth will taste so bad you'll want to vomit.

Still, I'm glad I had them. Enjoy.
