I may not use it, but go click on my profile. It links to my Facebook, which has my real name. And I have a picture of myself on my user profile here. Also, my name sucks. I have good reason to not use it.

While I relegate my real name to my profile on this site, my real name is more or less present as my ConceptArt.org posting name. The reason being that where my postings on the Escapist are mostly casual, I'm on ConceptArt.org for professional reasons. If clients were to contact me through that website I'd rather be called by a semblance of my real name than by an obscure reference to an increasingly obsolete internet cartoon.

So? not everything or everybody on the internet has a deeper meaning behind their user name, it isn't about hiding behind it or using it as a shield, most of the time they simply choose it because it sounds cool and the few people who truly use it as a shield generally see it as more of a way to be someone else and escape their normal life not as an escape from responsibility. besides using your real name is utterly pointless since no one cares who you are anyway, a simple name doesn't distinguish you from anyone else in the world anyway. you may look at it as an expression of yourself but in truth it does almost nothing to distinguish you from xXSup4133tkillaz-c4pacopXx. worst of all however you seem to think that using your real name to "take responsibility." makes you better than everyone else when in truth it means as little as having a user name with a "d" in it...

Okay, well good for you, but I don't feel like letting complete strangers know EVERY SINGLE THING about me.

Plus, I have usernames that are based off of stuff I'm into at the time. For instance, anyone who has read the Codex Alera series would know that Fidelias (IS THE MOST AWESOMEST CHARACTER EVER) is from that series. So it's obvious that I not only read the series, but also loved it enough to use it as my online name.

Plus, how is it more responsible that you use your real name? I mean, the only thing that affects is that now someone can take a 3 hour trip to your house to harm you.
To the rest of us who are normal, what do we care? Your name could be "Fuzzymcnuzzlepuffs" and it would carry the same amount of weight.

I don't have any personal connection to any name I have been given or i have given my self but we must live with a label so i will live with the one my parents gave me. If i could live the rest of my life without a name I would love it but I can't so I Go by Evan. OK Chris

I don't post with my real name, but my name is attached to most of my profiles for my various accounts. I just think it's easier to remember something like Sightless Wisdom(or at least Sightless) than my real name(Josh Duffenais for the record) I really don't have anything to hide about myself, nor do I think I can hide anything from the internet, Google knows everything about me.

There's no difference between using your real name instead of a username. It's not as if you're the only person in the world with your name.

Actually there is. You open up the possibilty of some-one you know reading what you wrote and being able to talk with you eye to eye about it.

All of my friends know that I go by SuperNova221 whenever a username is required (very few exceptions). If I went by Jamie Rose I could just outright deny that it was me, unless they knew I frequented a specific forum with my real name as my username, would be easy to deny it otherwise. It would be a lot more believeable for somebody to be using the username Jamie Rose who isn't me than somebody called SuperNova221. Unless they are impersonating me for whatever reason. So if anything, using a username makes me more accoutable for what I say and do online.

Dude, people can still do that. Using a pseudonym online isn't so much an accountability issue as it is a privacy thing. I mean, I didn't get my Morpheus badge, to say nothing of the Forum Regular one, by breaking rules, and yet I post under a screen name. The only (non-school related) account I use my real name on is my Facebook account, and even that I have set to Friends only on just about everything. I just don't like complete strangers
knowing too much about me, and I think most people who post under a pseudonym do so for that reason.

This is the reason I post with a fake name. My parents have practically trained me from birth to not give out too much information on the internet and scared me with "You never know what wackos will look you up." Therefore, the most I tell escapists is that I am under 18 and my FIRST name is Briana. On escapist, if you say something wrong, people can tell you. It doesn't change anything if you use Magic-twix123 or your real name.
