Its obviously not an assault rifle.
But I can see how someone might think your carrying a concealed tanto or something, get worried and call the fuzz.

Off topic.
I now have an all new respect for umbrellas.

Maybe the person who reported you to the police thought you had one of the Penguin umbrella.

Qucik question where did you buy that umbrella? (Yeah I know you're in the U.S. but I would still like to know) The handle make it look so cool!

Some jerks called the cops on us a year or so ago because "there was a terroristic bombing" in our field. We were burning off a pasture to replant, a fairly common practice when it comes to farming. The Fire Chief, who is a long time family friend, saw what was going on, laughed, turned around, and left.

Wow, the culture shock. I grew up in Texas. In our town a lot of guys still drive around with a rifle and shotgun on the gun rack right behind their head in the truck. Funny how different regions have different approaches to weapons.

Most places don't allow people to walk around with a sword. If you were stupid enough to think that this would not happen then you deserve this. Seriously, why did you buy an umberella that looks as if it contains a sword if you didn't want people to think it was a sword?

Dumb much?

It's like carrying around a lunchbox shaped like an Uzi then complaining that someone called the cops because someone was walking around with a gun.

Seriously you and only you are at fault here. Man up.
Sikhs are allowed to Carry knives in Canada. I have never once been threatened by or EVER felt I would be attacked. Shit in America, if that was a REAL RIFLE, and you registered it, it wold BE LEGAL. You are only not allowed to carry CONCEALED weapons.

On the front doors of a mall I visited in S.Carolina "Please do not bring your CONCEALED handguns inside the mall." You better believe I asked a MallCop. response: As long as it is visible, and in it's holster, you are o.k.
Yes, but this looks like a sword concealed in an umberella. The guy has no legs to stand on, if this story had started with "Cop shoots man that had an umberella which he bought to make it look like he was carrying a concealed sword" then everyone would be having much hilarity Darwin Awards and how much of an idiot the guy was to buy and then carry something like that around in public.

Its not the cops fault its the people in your town. Because they probably would have left you alone if they hadn't called about you.

So here is a question for you. Would you rather have the police NOT stop people that are complained about for carrying dangerous weapons or would you rather them ignore that and then have the person who is actually carrying a dangerous weapon kill someone?

Lol, classic. People are dumb. That's all it is. How the hell do you mistake an umbrella (albeit one with a katana handle) for an assault rifle? That's just ridiculous. People see what they want to see I suppose.

While I agree that the handle isn't immediately recognizable as belonging to an umbrella, people make these kind of stupid assumptions all the time. My family once got a call from the police about us having a bobcat tied up in our yard, when in reality he was just a freakishly big tabby. The problem in your case is the police can't just ignore reports of an assault rifle been touted around in public even if it turns out just to be an AWESOME umbrella. Yes, they over reacted, but it wasn't entirely unjustified. It was just stupid that someone couldn't tell the difference between a high powered firearm and an umbrella.

Calling it an assault rifle is a bit inane, but I could see someone thinking that a weapon. Mostly because I could take a blade and sheath it in an "umbrella" pretty easily.

I'm not surprised you're getting in trouble for carrying an item with parts that are similar in appearance to a weapon.

Your umbrella is garbage.

Only a weeaboo would think a katana-handle umbrella is superior to a European broadsword-handle umbrella.

I'd rather they look for 10 seconds, rub 2 brain-cells togeather to conclude "there's no way that's an assault rifle" then to fill out the complaint, calmly approach me and ask what it is I'm carrying

rather than have their hands at holster yelling "DROP THE GUN ON THE GROUND! PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD! and TURN AROUND!"

...seriously I could understand saying "DROP THE SWORD" I would have set it down and said "I'm sorry it's an umbrella it just looks like a sword, sorry for the confusion" but yelled "DROP THE GUN!" I had no clue what they were talking about and started throwing off everything as soon as I say they were looking at me, threw the sling off my back, the umbrella on the ground, even took off my shades and gloves

3 things

1: I'm no weeaboo, in fact that umbrella is the only thing close to being one that I possess or care to possess.

2: I've always liked katanas for the long slender blade, more of a quick light weapon then a heavy bludgeoning kind

3: It's actually a really good quality umbrella, sadly the handle is plastic and not metal or anything

Well most of the time it's in it's thing at my house for show, when I take it into public I generally have the handle in my sleeve and use it as a cane until it begins to rain

being that the walk home is about 2 miles and it was sunny out I didn't want to damage the tip or anything so I was carrying it, handle towards the ground, umbrella'ness rather obvious

plus last I checked I believe it would be legal if it WERE a sword because I wasn't brandishing it, and technically speaking I could just be taking it from one place to another without the help of a car

if they had asked/yelled to drop the blade I would have immediately dropped it held my hands up and tried to calmly explain the situation

but being yelled at to "DROP THE GUN!" it was hard to even tell they were talking to me

as for your Uzi comment about the lunchbox
no that's not what it would have been like

this is more along the lines of a fat guy in a sweatshirt being stopped because someone thought he was actually skinny and he had a bomb strapped to him

or someone stoping you for wearing a greenday shirt on the statement "He has a grenade!"

or to make it more realistic

you're carrying an airsoft gun and get stopped for carrying a sword!

EDIT: Dang, boffer wars must be a nightmare
hundreds of kids walking around with sword shaped PVC pipe coated in Duct Tape

...oh my

Yes, they said they were sorry for scaring me and then handed me my umbrella back

again, I'm not really mad at the cops, I'm mad at whoever thought the umbrella was a gun
