That's nice. I think it's an incredibly stupid thing to boycott an excellent game over, but everyone is entitled to their purchases I suppose.

AND just because I'm like that, I will buy TWO copies. One for me and one in your place. Ain't I nice?

I want to start out by saying i am a huge huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and a huge huge fan of Bethesda in general.

Between Fallout 3, Morrowind and Oblivion, I have lost somewhere in the vicinity of 400+ hours of my life.

I am fan. I am huge fan.

And I will not be purchasing Skyrim.

I want to make it clear, I have been lusting for Skyrim since it was announced. All press I have seen looks magnificent. Everything I have heard sounds incredible. It looks like another brilliant Bethesda game that I will subsequently lose a massive portion of my life and time to.

And I will not be purchasing it.

Because of this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.315129-Mojang-and-Bethesda-Are-Going-to-Court

I will not support a company that attempts to use lawsuits as a means of flagrant bullying and outright douchbaggery in order to crush perceived competition.

If Bethesda goes through with this utter horseshit of a frivolous lawsuit, I will no longer support Bethesda.

Even though this means I will never play Skyrim, I will no longer support Bethesda in any way.

I will not purchase their products. I will not play products of theirs that I already own.

I have already sacrificed 400+ hours of work on Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, deleting the games from my hard drive and removing all saves.

Bethesda will make a hundred bajillion dollars off of Skyrim.

Not a single penny of it will be from me.

Team Mojang.
I came here expecting to see some posturing and grandstanding over trivial bullshit. It would appear that I'm wrong. Let me be clear: this is the first I'm hearing of this, so i'm not sure what I believe. You could be very wrong, or you could be very right.

This is what boycotting is for. If you are right, and it sounds like you probably are, then good on you.

In other news, I may not be purchasing a Wii U, because they're being manufactured by Foxcon, which is just about leading the manufacturing world in human rights violations right now. Their employees just keep on killing themselves.

I was never excited for Skyrim (much less after playing it), so I was going to wait for a sale or something, since this little fiasco, I have decided to steer clear. I support your efforts.

I know Bethesda may not support the actions of their lawyers and big wigs, but I don't want my money going anywhere near them to be honest. Besides, they are rich enough as it is.

Sorry dude but im totally going to buy it and then scrolls too or whatever it ends up called.

Copyright law is a terrible mess and we can't fault them over issues we don't have the full information on. I wouldn't kid myself that not playing their old games matters to anyone else but you either, it just kinda looks like you want attention.

Team Jacob! Team Jacob! (sorry, thats all i could think of when he said team mojang)

anyhoo; so?

i didn't get gears of war 3. i didn't make a thread for that.

i'm not going to get halo 4. not gonna make a thread for that either.

i will get skyrim, on account of it looking like a sweet game that i'd play for a long time. honestly, i too recoiled at bethesda's willingness to sue everyone; but i'm into video games because they're fun. i spend my free time playing them. frankly, as long as i get a quality product in the end, i don't give a hoot what they do.

Good for you, son. That's very commendable.

*draws sword and magic wand, and heads into the crazy wild wilderness of Skyrim*

See ya, have fun boycoting!

While I completely support your consumer rights to vote with your wallet and make this stand, I can't say I'm going to be standing there with you come 11-11-11.

This is a behind the scenes matter that is only in the gaming public conciousness because Escapist and a few other blogs got wind of it. As a gamer, this kind of thing has little to do with you, me, or anyone else other than Notch and the Zenimax/Bethesda people. This kind of thing happens a lot in gaming and every other entertainment industry. Would you not watch Ghostbusters because of that old TV show that had the name first? There was lawyer activity there as well.

Companies need to protect what is theirs. Sometimes on the outside that can look like a jackass move and it may well be just that. But at the end of the day I'll support Mojang by purchasing whatever game "Scrolls" turns out to be, not by severing my connection to a company I otherwise enjoy their products and services of. This is their business, and should be left as such.

And I didn't purchase New Vegas for the same reason. If they must spend on ridiculous ongoing nonsense, they don't need my money. I will buy it used, however. I guess my morality code is slightlty different than yours. It's a shame, I liked my used copy of F3 so much that I bought some DLC just so I'd send them some money.

Notch even specifically asked people not to avoid buying Skyrim over this.

Legal departments do not a company make. Most of the actual devs probably have absolutely nothing to do with this.

And then there's the general silliness of online boycott attempts.

Also, there's an awful lot of naivete involved in the attempts at more sophisticated discussion of trademark law. Notice in that podcast how they keep confusing trademark and copyright over and over and make strange comments about "contractual obligation" that make no sense in context. Bethesda has to actively defend its trademark to have rights to it, but it doesn't have to defend it in cases where it's not threatening. If someone came out with a game title involving Scrolls that actually was similar to Elder Scrolls and then cited the fact that Bethesda didn't actively pursue previous potential trademark infringement, Bethesda just says "that wasn't likely to be confused with it". Bethesda doesn't need to defend its trademark in irrelevant situations. If someone starts selling a mop called "Scrolls", Bethesda does not need to pursue legal action to retain the trademark for their video game.

IP law is dumb in a lot of places, but it isn't so dumb that you're forced to pursue cases this stupid to retain your trademark.

I'm glad you said this, I'm not buying it new so Bethesda don't get any money, but I might borrow it or buy it off a friend. I have to say it's pretty harsh on Mojang, they can't steal 1 word (Scrolls).

Not buying this new,I may buy/borrow it off a friend though.

So does that mean you will never buy another Activision game? The company that if a part of it is not doing so well will give it a cheap crappy game to make so it has a reason to get rid of them, i.e, Pandemic.

I wouldn't consider 1 frivolous lawsuit enough to make a case against the whole company - especially when it's Bethesda Game Studios developing it, who are one of the coolest AAA devs around in my opinion - but it's your call. And for anyone criticising him with this, watch the Jimquisition episode on Boycotting.
Yeah, that was actually a good episode. I'll sum it up for anyone who can't be arsed: pick your battles.

This one's hardly worthwhile. This is equating accidentally jostling past someone in a crowd to a violent mugging with lots of unnecessary stabbing in terms of the dickery going on in the media industries. And $60 is like less than 0.00001% of what their initial rake in profit margin is going to be, let alone factoring on employee salaries, technical fees and advertising costs, etc that it'll also pay for.

Don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but Bethesda Softworks (the publisher) is not the same as Bethesda Game Studios (the maker of Skyrim).

All things considered, you will probably use this as an excuse to download the game. Just buy it, K?

I hope their game isn't going to be so buggy it crashes all the time like all their other games.

Well, if you boycotted every company that's tried to sue people for pretty much pointless reasons, then you'd have to boycott every company.

So therein lies the problem.

Oh, god. I laughed so hard at this.

Get over yourself. The title lawsuit isn't a big deal and Bethesda couldn't care less about your 50$. I'd bet a lot of money you'll buy the game anyway in two months.

The guys who actually make the game and the legal department that is dicking around with Mojang are a seperate group of people.
The actual developers are probably almost as supportive of Mojang as you are. Probably.

Meh, even if you don't crumble before the game releases, coming to the Escapist and seeing everyone raving will probably make you :D
