Space cowboys? Firefly, the game! I would definitely buy that, though I'd be wary on what the mechanics of such a game would be.

But if there's only a certain amount of recruitable NPCs, then if they all die wouldn't you be screwed?
That's actually what I had in mind. :D

Not in the gameplay sense, but more in the sense that now you've lost your big, reliable guy, and you have to make do without him. As far as the actual gameplay, maybe you could have an infinite amount of "hireling" style NPCs who can join you, but aren't up to the caliber of the main NPCs. Kind of like the difference between a PC and a minion in D&D. The issue with that woud be that you'd have to spend a ridiculous amount of time scripting for every eventuality and character death, but I'm just spitballing here, so yeah. :p

As far as the feel that I'm trying to accomplish with this, I'm thinking along the lines of George R.R. Martin's philosophy on killing characters off:

George R.R. Martin said:
"...I don't know, [but] when my characters are in danger, I want you to be afraid to turn the page (and to do that) you need to show right from the beginning that you're playing for keeps."
Maybe it wouldn't translate well in a game, but I think it'd be kinda cool.
Hmmm, I like the way you think friend. You got a good thing going there.

So I've been playing Red Dead Redemption, I've been watching Cowboy Bebop and I had an idea.

I'm sure plenty of people have had this idea before but I want to hear some thoughts on this.

Think of a game, Red Dead Redemption style. In space. Going to different planets catching bounties and such.

And that's all I got I haven't thought of it much past that I just wanted to share the idea with everyone. So any thoughts? Do you think this would make a good game? If not how could it be made better?

P.S Anyone like my avatar? Huh? Huh? Cool stuff, huh?
I've often thought that a game where you can travel in space but also visit various planets and space stations would be a huge hit. I mean, imagine where it's up to you where you go, and you have these fully explorable planets that you can land on or go to any time. You could complete missions or just run around killing people and blowing stuff up in space if you wanted to.
The way you put it sounds like GTA in space. Which is awesome, a space bounty hunter opera sandbox game.

Thats what I've always thought would be really awesome. And it could be done with today's powerful machines. We'll probably never get it though.

That sounds like... Red Dead in space... Not much to say about yay or nay, it's just a setting really. Personally I generally despise space settings.

Replace movie with game and that's pretty much what i think, as long as you can make the game fun.

I always liked space cowboys, but honestly, concepts like these are a dime a dozen. You can make anything from it, and conversely, you can replace it with anything. What matters is how you flesh out the story and manage the gameplay.

It sounds to me like one of those really great concepts that would fall flat in execution. Creating enough environments to make a sandbox in space would be a tremendous challenge. You run the risk of most worlds being a few square miles of re-skinned clones of every other world (I'm looking at you, Mass Effect 1) or being shallow, one dimensional locales that end up feeling gimmicky. It isn't really a limitation of the technology, but rather a limitation of time, resources and artistic talent.

There's also a problem with focusing too heavily on a single objective type. If there are enough unique ways to handle the bounty hunting to avoid feeling like you're just going through the motions, then it could work. Conversely, including too many other objective types may make the game way too unfocused.

Still, it does have a lot of potential. I could see really enjoying chasing bounty heads through crowded urban environments, having to rely on non-lethal techniques to bring fugitives in alive and having to out think and out maneuver enemies rather than out gunning them. Throw in a little detective work to track them down and I think it could be a winner.

Sounds like a good idea for Bioware to use in the Mass Effect universe after the third game.

It sounds like a game which, personally, I wouldn't go near with a fucking barge pole.
It's just... Travelling between planets is so over-rated. The problem is that usually each planet will only have 1 or 2 areas, and nothing more.
Why not go back to multiple discs and have just a MASSIVE Earth?

So, so much.

College. I'm still fairly new in the program but I've learned some basic coding and interactivity so I can design text based games and a few simple sprites for now. nothing special but I'm planning out storyboards and game mechanics for a few independent ideas right now, I'll handle the mechanics and my best friend will handle the art.

Put in:

A good story. In fact, by the style of game you seem to be going for, multiple good stories. You're gonna meet, and catch, alot of people on your journeys through space, so they better be interesting people with interesting stories to tell.

Proper. Tactical. Space. Combat. Seriously, I want the feeling of being the captain of a proper full-size ship in the heat of battle, not one singular fighter or defense turret.

Varied planets. I don't just mean the stock city planet, lava planet, ice planet, and so on, I mean really wierd and fatastic planets. I want planets where gravity is just plain throwing a fit, cultures built on a load of asteroids tied together, planets where wierd experiments have created rips in dimensions, bringing forth all sorts of creatures, friendly and otherwise.

Choice. I want to choose armour because I want that style of armour oce in a while, not because that particular armour has stats far better than any other, and some bounties I want to think twice about actually taking in.

And finally, most importantly, some kind of armour that looks like Boba fetts just about to the point where george lucas's lawyers wouldn't be able to convincingly call it non-coincidental.

If it was one massive Earth it wouldn't have that Cowboy Bebop feel I wanted.

I was going for Cowboy Bebop: The Game with Red Dead controls.
