Prototype seems to be offering something very interesting, the ability to run around as a pretty villainous person in a sandbox, terrorising the local populace, whilst following your own agenda. I think it's refreshing to see something that doesn't have the main character as a goody-two-shoes, kitten-saving, child-friendly hero.

Mini-Review:

So, the game is actually quite good, and the one major fear I had was put to rest. You are certainly NOT overpowered and the game is not easy. The parkour game mechanic is almost unnaturally satisfactory. The combat is fair, and the story is decent. The amnesia thing actually works quite well because it all felt appropriately. Its like Mass Effect's story, Mass Effect did nothing new, but it approached the overused sci-fi genericness with such pizazz that I didn't begrudge it. Its the same way with Prototype. The story is quite overused but its done in such a wonderful way.

Alex Mercer seems to be the mutant son of a Wolverine, Spiderman, Nightcrawler, and Mystique, and its pulled off quite well. You have a nice illusion of power but not too much, you feel epic and powerful as you can sling cars at people, create little shockwaves when you slam into the ground, and the feeling of slamming huge rockfists into a tank until it blows up is quite satisfying. However the game still keeps a level of difficulty as there are mutant creatures and tanks who can take you down if you don't be careful.

Buy it, or at least rent it.

I'm still trying to figure out why people compare Prototype and Infamous at all. Now that both are out, they're quite obviously very different games whose only connecting points are "you have powers", "free roaming", and "came out around the same time". Prototype is more speeding around and hacking people to bits, while Infamous plays more like an over the shoulder shooter...but with lightning.
both of them are open world sandbox action titles, where the protagonist is the unlikely recipient of super powers which he uses in a morally questionable way? I can see why people are drawing similarities...

Yeah.. But in inFamous you can shoot lightning..

In Prototype you have the ability to shove bio-organic spikes up the ass of a tank

Prototype wins.

I was never really excited for Prototype. It just seemed like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction just with more blood and a different main character...

Infamous > Prototype

WE HAVE SPOKEN!

There is no better thrill than bringing down the lightning down on a crowd of innocent people...
dude it just came out yesterday dont say youve won until the battles over

Prototype isn't as good as Infamous in my eyes and thus has already lost the battle to Infamous. I didn't like Prototype that much...end of story.

I think that a 5 should be considered "average", as in it brings nothing new to the genre/meduim etc. thats how i would do it if i was a reveiwer. 6 would be a solid game, 7 would be a good game, 8 would be a great game, 9 would have to be something pretty special, and 10 would have to be a freakishly good game, only given out once a year max event. that would prevent us from reveicing the glut of >93s on metacritic etc.
So you're more waiting for the Edge review?
nah, I don't really read reveiws. If I'm gonna buy a game, I usually check steam, which I think uses metacritic, which seems to be the most reliable way to do scores. Oh, and anything that Yahtzee likes can't be that bad, as he hates pretty much everything. Thats pretty much why I bought the Orange Box, for Portal.

I may sound like a completely obnoxious fanbouy but... this looks like The Hulk v2.0...
Seriously, gameplay is near identical, map is near identical, even the way you upgrade your character with new moves and how they are completely irrelevant to the repeatative missions is by far too remeniscant of The Hulk videogame(s).

I can't help but feel that this is The Hulk videogame with new character model sprites, some very minor graphical and gameplay enhancements and that they call this a new game.

I cannot for the life of me understand how some people can call this game even passable by todays standards when all they do is revamp an old idea and slap a new face on it and call it a day.

Yeah, because recycling ideas never happens in the gaming world.

Recycling ideas is nothing new, I am painfully aware of that but there's obviously a difference between recycling and recycling.

This game; to me has waaay too much recycling and what is mind baffling is that this kind of repackaging is concidered passable and acceptable.

I loved this game. I say "Blow it out your nose" to reviews, because reviews aren't connected to my brain by any sort of link. I-liked-this-game. I had FUN. Sure, it has its flaws, but the gameplay was FUN. Nowadays we play games for complex-as-fuck reasons and try to find some deep philosophical answer to life in them. Not me, no sir, call me old fashioned but I play a game because it can keep me entertained for nearly a month. People were trashing on this game because they expected it to be bad, and when the game was released, low-and-behold, they were proved wrong and didn't want to look like fools.

I played this game, the IGN reviewer played this game. Does the fact that he reviews games for a living make his review worth more than mine? Maybe, if I was saying something along the lines of "OMFG prototype rox and kiks infamASS's ass!" But no, I'm not saying that, because I liked inFamous too. People who get payed to review a game can't be trusted, money is involved. Read reviews written by your average web-surfer, then figure it out for yourself and BUY THE DAMN GAME. :)

Its not, in my opinion its like a big mixing pot of the best ideas of quite a few different games such as Spiderman 2, Hulk Ultimate Destruction, God of War, etc.
