Do you ever call someone out on something stupid they say and they treat you like an enemy even if you're on the same "side"?

Someone on Facebook just gave the typical "Romney is going to end womens' rights" spiel and I commented (yes, I know, I'm stupid for doing so) that spouting that kind of rhetoric wasn't helping because it was simply wrong (which it is). I backed up my argument but I won't go into here.

Now keep in mind that I voted for Obama. Next thing I know, I'm getting buried with comments telling me to fuck off, that I'm the one not helping, this that and the other thing. When I told them I had indeed voted for Obama, they told me to be "proud I voted for Obama and shut the fuck up."

So I guess even though I voted for their guy, the fact I call them out on wrong information in relation to the other side makes me an enemy.

Someone explain this to me.

Capcha: Who, what, where.

You tell me, capcha. You tell me.

The hardest thing about making a comment on a social media site is that anyone that see's it can take it into any kind of context they want. Even jump the gun and yell at people over the silliest things, some people can't take comments with a grain of salt so to say. It will pass and people will forget, next thing you know you'll be laughing about it later over drinks.

Many social mediums like Facebook are just breeding grounds for this kind of behavior. It's gotten to the point where if you don't get screamed at for you opinions it'll be a surprise.

Still, many it's just the people, the person you're describing I assume hates to lose which explains why they lashed out at you despite "being on the same side". Maybe it's just a personal thing and they just wanted to scream about someone.

Yeaaah, I learnt my lesson after getting in a heated debate with someone over 'ObamaCare'. It ended very badly, with me losing respect in that person for just taking whatever they hear from one newsource as fact and them replying that they'd pray for me (in reference to me making a joke about abortion)

So, I no longer even bother. I think they're dumb and they think I'm dumb..So, no one wins.

The problem with talking to people online is that they love to assume things. If I make a comment people will assume where I live, what I look like, what gender I am, my age, and even my sexuality. Then after all that they will only take the general idea of what you said and make giant deductions and all the while try to take implications which is impossible to properly do since text has no tone (this is the same reason sarcasm doesn't work) from what you said.

For example if I were to say "I hate the gay guys on the train they keep hitting on me" many people would see "I hate gay guys" then proceed to make up implications of intense prejudice. All the meanwhile what I said was almost completely unrelated to what I said.

Also something that many people forget is that you can't attack someone or belittle there opinions and actually expect them to listen no matter how right you are or how wrong they are and it doesn't matter what facts you toss out a offended person is a person who will get there back up. When ever I write something I ask myself will this make people feel personally attacked and if it is possible to avoid. Even this doesn't work because as I said before people like to only see certain words and ignore the rest.

I guess I should have put this at the top because I personally feel this is incredibly important. You should never enter a argument without being willing to be proven wrong and attempting to fully understand the other persons point of view.

You ran into some people that hated being called out on their bullshit. This kind of thing happens. The bigger question is, why do you expect any better of people on facebook?

The stunning revelation that no political party has a monopoly on stupid? What next, the discovery that all that separates the parties is what kind of government they want? It truly is 2012, and we only have little over a month left! Make your peace, for the end is upon us! We know too much!

Seriously. I'm a Republican, and I've lived every day of my post-Jr. High life being called a retard or a bigot depending on the weather. I just have a different political philosophy, people! Vote against my guy, but you don't need to hate me... All I did was disagree. I am as much a religious, woman-hating bigot without a diploma as any of you are effeminate Communist baby-killing snobs that want to rule the world. We get defined by the worst on our own respective sides, that's inescapable so long as our debate styles rely on the low blow to come out ahead. But is it really so hard to understand that not everyone is so abysmally cartoonish? Politics don't need to ruin the potential bonds between our fellow man, but I've so often lost a "friend" the moment politics came up.

Moral of the story: let's drop the knives and settle the fight in the ring instead. Queensberry rules. Then let's sit down and have a drink, what do you say?

PS please don't bother trying to debate politics with me here. I was specifically responding to the topic of stupid people and their bandwagons. I don't have time or patience for trolls and flame wars.

My boss and I are ostensibly on the same side in that we work in the same place, for the same people. I no longer bother calling him on all the stupid shit he says and does, because it's only ever led to him getting angry, denying the problem, and resenting me.

The double standards, the lack of standards, the "manager privilege" he claims which the owners never intended him to have, the recriminations and hypocrisy which are the hallmarks of his tenure..... I just don't speak to him about these things any longer.

I even abdicated being his assistant, because he doesn't want or need an assistant. The other sub-bosses all agree with me, none of them wants to step into my old position.

In manager meetings, we have tried the argument that, if twenty-eight of the thirty people at this company feel one way, and only he feels the other way (with one guy simply not giving half a shit about anything), it might be time to reexamine his opinion. Nope, no dice, he told us we're all unreasonable.

I'm for stupidity.

It's just way more fun. And honestly never something really getting in a fret about.

And, hey, if everyone was stupid, can you imagine how much fun we'd all be having?

That's damn near exactly what I came here to say, but with one little addition.

Most people consciously know their political opposites aren't all walking stereotypes.

Until of course, the point where they actually meet one.

Somebody claimed that "something needs to be done" about PC gamers, because of their elitism.

I pointed out that you can't just generalise all PC gamers, they are individuals, some are bad, some aren't.

I then got accused of thinking that the nasty things some elitists say is okay, and that I must be a PC elitist.

That was on this forum funnily enough.

Not surprising.

OT: I see too many stupid comments on Facebook to count on a daily basis. The election has only magnified people's stupidity as of late.

Yup, I've been there too. Only it was on the opposite political side. I'm a conservative (don't... just don't...) and so are a lot of people I know. But when I say something like... oh, I don't know... "Fox News might be conservative, but they are still heavily biased and therefore everything they say needs to be taken with a salt block", I get chewed out.
Nieroshai said:
I totally agree. Those stereotypes need to just go away. I hate being thought of as a racist, sexist, xenophobic, backwards redneck just because I have conservative political views (I actually am a Christian, so I can't deny that...)

Also, O.P., were you expecting anything more from Facebook? I swear, Facebook has effectively lowered the average I.Q.

Either that, or it has just opened up a door for stupid people to be stupid in front of others.
That actually might be it.

It's fun debating with people about their vote for president mattering in certain states. I live in Upstate New York, for example, which means my vote for president is worth exactly squat, NYC determines where the electorals from NY go. When I call people out on stuff like that because they say "every vote matters" you would think I kicked their puppy.

Side note: I did vote because I can still influence reps and senators, just not president.

Yeah, it took all my willpower not to tell her I'm a Satanist or something or something snarky about already being saved. :\

I'm just as puzzled as you are, to be honest. I understand people making (wrong) assumptions and acting on them but many do it regularly and on levels I wouldn't even consider normal.

Why recently, on this very forum, in a Linux thread, a guy stated several wrong things. I corrected him and went on a mini rant against Windows. It wasn't even "Never use it because of this" or at least I never meant it as such. Somehow, that guy then assumed and kept insisting that I was trying to make him use a different OS. Every time I called him out on the ridiculous things he made up about what I supposedly said, he went on and added even more to the pile. It was...similar to your experience, I guess. I shall not link to the thread for the much stupid involved. And the walls of text.

A lot of people talk bollocks they know nothing about. They hear things from other people or in the totally and completely legit newspaper and believe it.

If I don't see a "Muslims want to ban Christmas/pubs/having fun!!!!!" post on FB this year, I'll be very surprised.
The media just pull things out of their arse and play it up to get everyone pissed off and make them think it's perfectly acceptable to be racist. People just believe it without questioning it and it's depressing how ignorant people are.

I suppose some people can't help being stupid. I'm a few sandwiches short of a picnic but I'm just a slow learner and it takes me a bit longer to understand stuff. Saying that, I can't cope with speaking to a lot of people in my city because they're so thick they must be using their remaining braincells to keep themselves alive. It's really hard to speak to some people because I have to use very small words and speak slowly or else they look at me like I punched a baby.

If your stupidity is down to ignorance, if you were given a chance of education and decided to piss it away you should be ashamed of yourself.

Well I kinda agree that "Romney is going to end womens' rights" in the sense that Romney is going to whittle away further at all of our rights. Quite frankly tho, this country is screwed either way. My vote was cast in hopes of delaying the inevitable end of our way of life, not because I think we can affect actual positive change.

Well I'm pro-stupidity so 'neh'!

Yeah, I did just use that as an excuse to post the Go Team Retard thing

Anyway, the only way I can explain it is that they believe that if you tell them their information is wrong, they personally take it as you calling them an idiot, which makes you a hostile to them. As utterly stupid as that is.
