Health Meters.

There is nothing wrong with them, and they're accurate.

Here's a crazy thought...but having health bars again!
The point of this is that most FPS today have done away with health meters, I like health meters as much as the next guy, but in fast paced FPS games, regenerating health is probably a better idea, this thread is about putting a spin to it
TF2 is quite fast paced.

I say that those people are silly.

In most FPSs you also don't have legs or a shadow, and your hand sticks out of your neck. At least blood spraying up into your eyes is a possibility.

Although personally I prefer the screen to become more and more saturated, and I'm still happy to use a health bar.

I have to agree there. People complaining about the "realism" of jam spraying in your eyes need to keep in mind the basics of FPS.

Ah, beat me to it. I knew it had to be done.

In all seriousness, I don't really mind the red screen thing as long as it doesn't obscure too much, which unfortunately it usually does.

I think when you play an FPS you should have to wear an electronic jumpsuit that shocks you with 30,000 volts in the area you get shot on the game. Good luck getting rid of that hard on after a short session online.
Actually, they've done that, but with a vest that basically thumps you lightly where you got hit. It wasn't very popular.
OT: I like how a little indie game called Lugaru HD did it. It was a third person action game (so it would be difficult to replicate in an FPS). You'd basically see cuts where you got hit, and too much damage would cause your character to move slower and hold his side. Eventually, your vision would get blurry. Then you'd die. It was pretty cool, if somewhat inexact.

That's an awful idea. Electricity is where it's at.
Hell yeah! BZZZZZZT! That's what you get for sucking at quake!

Wow, a lot of love for the archaic energy bar. Isn't it a good job that the industry didn't think 'What's wrong with x; it's worked fine up to now?' If they had we would still be playing sprite based games on cassette tapes moving from one static location to the next while marvelling at the dozens of colours on screen at once.

OT: I would be against anything that hampered the players performance (ie: blurred vision, diminished accuracy, shaky-cam) as it would cultivate the mindset of "I'm dying so I might as well reload". If anything, I believe a game should help you if you are dying to keep you invested. I like the idea of the time slowing effect (I also agree it is useless in multi-player) and think something like that coupled with a change of perspective and an inability to move(like shooting from a prone position) would give the feeling that you have something to fight for. Or possibly an adrenaline meter that goes up as you are shot and when it is maxed out you go into a bullet time state like Max Payne or RDR and have to clear out enough enemies to give yourself time to recover as you'd be helpless for ten seconds after it finishes.

Futuristic FPS.

Just a single shot will kill you instantly, no second chances.

Everyone has an energy shield, which strength can be seen visually.

Once it goes down, a single grazing shot will kill you.

Ah, the strawberry jam to the face approach...how lovely immersion breaking and generally annoying. Sorry, but that crap just blurs your vision, making it harder to survive. Plus having generating health means that the character can magically grows his legs back after stepping on a mine. Bloody hell, it's now wonder why today's shooters are shit, and why the players of said shooters are all (without a single exception) retards.

So what I propose: a health bar divided into perhaps 5 sub-bars. Each sub-bar brings with it different penalties, eg more wobbly aiming, loud breathing, limping, inability to jump, inability to use 2-handed weapons, etc. Every time you take damage, your health drops accordingly, but will regenerate over time (we're talking minutes here, not seconds) to fill the current sub-bar. That way, injuries that are in fact serious will feel serious. Additionally, I'd like a red circle to flash up on the screen, which will indicate the direction of the shot. At least that way you'll know which hidden sniper just shot you.

Bioshock ticks all the right boxes.
Health meter- check.

Beating heart, blurred red edges, no jam on my bloody face.- check.
The first one also had a distinct audio cue when you were close to death and should hit that ol' circle button.

Your eyes are bleeding? Well that's what you get for playing minecraft :p

Ot:
What's wrong with health meters - how about everything?
In singleplayer, where at least I like to get immersed in the story, health bars are about the least immersive thing since noclip.
And in multiplayer, where (again, at least I) am looking for competetive fights, sure, jelly-goggles turn the game into "who sees and hits whom first" (i.e: who's the better player), you know like what actual combat is like, whereas healthmeters turn the game into "nvm player skill, who has more hp and the bigger gun at the start of the fight" (like unreal tournament).

I don't know if anyone has said this before, but I liked it when the audio would fade out so all you could hear was your own heartbeat, your accelerated breathing and a constant whine like the ringing in your ears.

Maybe to add a visual element you could have it so that your character would hold onto the where ever you got shot to hold in whatever might be leaking out or start limping, so obviously you'd be better off with a one-handed weapon like a pistol instead of a two-handed one like a shotgun or rifle and maybe have trouble standing up. If you're going for realism, might as well go for it 100%.

agreed. My biggest problem is when the screen becomes unreadable due to blood/desaturation/darkness. I know it's realistic that you'd have a harder time fighting when you're dying, but....If I wanted realism, I probably wouldn't be playing a game where I can empty fifty pounds of ammunition into bad guys without blinking.

Or being slowed down by fifty pounds of ammo.

Or the 30 guns used to shoot it.

Or where a medkit/ten seconds rest can seal my skull back up.
