The GPS system i most sandbox games are a good example.

But yes, waypoints,to much script, and autosave functions are the culprits here.
Autosave isn't really holding your hand, just saves players the hassel of breaking gameplay and immersion to navigate the menus to save their game.

OT: Games that basically tell you every single detail of things, like Grand Theft Auto 4, the first island is just completely subtle tutorials and dicking about...

a game "Holding your Hand" is a phrase used to describe any instance where the gameplay appears designed to let the game do most of the work for the player, be it pointing out where the player needs to go, or what to do, or letting you skip parts of the game you suck at.

It's like when you were little and you were having trouble with something, an older person would come over, hold your hand, tell you everything's going to be fine, and then help you do whatever you were having trouble with.

Mostly that phrase is utter by people who don't think a game is hard enough unless you have to spend 2 hours to complete the first level on easy. The phrase is just a generic way of complaining that games are too easy. I think that a number of these people are actually upset because games are not as broken (and thus easier) as they used to be but that's another point. It's just a way of complaining without specific examples about ease.

It means it's one of those games that gives you tutorials, and your at the final boss.

Watch Yatzee's vid on Super Mario Galaxy 2. As good as it is, having a SEPARATE manual that explains the controls, ASWELL AS HAVING IT IN THE GAME can be a bit much in terms of babysitting. Your half expected to go up against Bowser and then the game take over and say 'don't you worry your sorry little head, WE'LL beat that big nasty wasty for you!'
