Hm... so it's just short-sightedness then?

I have the same condition myself in that case, though I'm certainly not going to quit The Escapist over it. Focusing on nearby objects for long periods of time can (and likely has done in my case) cause you to become more short-sighted faster, but using computers/reading books/watching TV is practically inescapable nowadays anyway, and the damage is completely countered by glasses or contact lenses. Not that I often need to focus on things in the distance anyway, the only time I'll really need to wear my glasses is if I decide to learn how to drive.

Just a notice to the couple of people who are apparently now worrying about their own computer usage, I would forget about it. It's practically a non-issue.

Astigmatism is just a condition that means your eyes are funny-shaped right? I have the same. This alone would not make you allergic to screens.
On another, degenerative myopia simply means short-sightedness that's getting worse...

Take some comfort in the fact that posting on an internet forum is not one of the things required for a happy and meaningful life. :)

Perhaps you should save up and get laser eye surgery since those tend to be successful (not all the time.. but worth a shot.) Give you props for being brave through a tough time and we're all cheering from you. Please do take care.

I suggest he rip out his younger brothers eyes right out of his head and take them so he'll never go blind again....EVEEEEEEER :D

......Well it worked for me at least >_>

@OT: Dude that is some seriously Harsh news. I can only hope you find a cure for such an ailment. Going blind is a f*cking scary thought.

Somebody's pants are on fire (cause they are a liar liar) - I haven't decided who yet. Now that the OP is gone I guess we won't know. I am split between incompetent optometrist, evil parenting, and fibbing OP.

Whatever this condition the OP suggested that it could get better with a cut down on screen time and with that they would be back. I have never heard of degenerative disease tied exclusively to computer use, that can be reversed by a reduction in use. Seems like something a mother might bio-engineer to get her kid outside. "Bio-engineer" being synonymous with "made up".

The OP should spend their 6 hours a week investigating what exactly is going on here... or grow up and stop lying on forums for sympathy.
My thoughts exactly. Obviously this parent hasn't thought past 'get the kid off the internet'. Eventually said parent will have to back down unless they want OP to grow up to work on a factory line. OP will have to be on a computer for school and work. Period. Unless you become a low paid physical labourer, you will need to look at computer screens for longer than six hours a week. Mom will get caught out eventually unless cheap physical labour is what she had dreamed for her child. The second she starts talking about university/college she will be busted. Never mind tha fact that a lot of grade school boards are looking into e-readers for digital textbooks since they are smaller and cheaper. So good luck with that.

Personally I don't think OP is lying. I think they are young. Mom and doctor chatted, didn't tell OP anything but the alleged treatment. OP doesn't even know what he has been diagnosed with. He's a minor - the doctor doesn't talk to him directly and no one is required to tell him anything. 'Computer screens will make you go blind' sounds suspiciously like a mom's belief. No one under 30 believes that anymore, but I could seriously hear my mom saying something stupid like that. Right after she told me that 'D&D makes people go crazy and kill each other'. I distinctly remember not being able to have an NES for the longest time because 'they ruin the tv screen' somehow(parents could never tell me why). Bear in mind a lot of doctors are old and have idiotic beliefs too. My g/f's family doctor is a fucking joke for instance.

That's probably one of the things you should try before going blind.
Completelly agreed.

Is there a name for the condition thats making you go blind?
Yes, I believe they call it "chronic masturbation"..

Joking aside and on topic.

Hope your eyes get well soon.
I have never seen a porno in my life, let alone masturbated to one. I'm not offended, just wanted to clear that up.

Anyway, when my mother and the optometrist were talking to each other, I overheard the word "astigmatism" being thrown around. So is anyone's wondering what exactly I have, that's the best answer I can give you.
What?! Astigmatism does what, now?

Like several others in this thread, allow me to call BS. I've got astigmatism and my job and studies require me to spend thirty-plus hours in front of an LCD screen. That's not counting my leisure hours that are also spent in front of a monitor. Unless it's really sunny and really hot outside, at which point I go out for a swim. Anyway.

If your ophthalmologist was referring to macular degeneration, then that does make a tiny bit of sense. Same thing if glaucoma was mentioned, really. But - astigmatism giving way to total blindness? I'm really skeptical about that. Sounds like you're the victim of a concerned parent who didn't know what to do to peel you away from teh interwebz and who managed to get a rather unprofessional eye shrink to be complicit in some sort of desperate scheme. What's even more suspicious is the fact that you've mentioned that your mother clams up if asked for extra details.

I'm aware I'm writing this well after you'll have supposedly left, but there's always the off chance that you'll snap and break your vows at some point in the future. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong and stop me if it's inconsiderate, but it really sounds like someone doesn't want to shell out the cost of a new prescription and is willing to try pretty stupid palliatives. Our bodies wear out over time, dude. I've had the same glasses for ten years now and I'm absolutely due for a review. It's completely normal. I'm not going blind or anything close to that, I just no longer am in my sweet sixteen. I'm 28 years old.

Man, I had readied myself to give a big "Who cares?" to some jerk saying "I blatantly disobeyed the forum rules and I got suspended! How unfair! I'm leaving forever!"

But that's a pretty sad story. Sorry to hear that broski. Good luck with everything, hope you can return soon.

I'm so sorry to hear that. :(
Good luck fighting blindness. Hopefully you'll be able to come back one day. When I clicked on this thread I fully expected it to be another drama queen leaving. Really sad to see someone who actually likes the escapist leaving for once.

I hope the others are right and it's people stretching the truth to get you off the computer. Lying like that would be a little hurtful, but at least it stops you from losing something like that.

I'm so sorry man. i can't imagine how hard this must be for you... I hope that scientists will one day be able to come out with a screen that won't hurt your eyes, or be able to fix your eyes permanently. Until then, good luck. You're in our hearts and thoughts.
