I call you friend. I kinda wanna ask those people if they want a pat on the back for their ethnicity or whatever they are proudly telling everyone about. It's annoying and I hope to God it ends much sooner than a few hundred years because I'm getting really tired of hearing all this proud bullshit.
Maybe I know what we need to do.

I'm going to spend the next 5 years blending various dyes and staining agents and NANO TECHNOLOGY!!! I'll make great efforts to make the solution colourless, tasteless and self replicating. Then I'm spiking every countries water supply with it.

And it shall turn everybody...... bright blue.

But then we'd no doubt have people saying they're proud to have a specific hair cut. D:

I don't think we can remove peoples need to individualise themselves by counter productively drawing attention to the fact that they're part of a collective.

Stupid people and their stupid need for validation. :[
Oh come now, you should know everyone needs to feel special like the little snow flake that they are.

I love the idea, but I'm sure that's what's probably going to happen, that or fancy bracelets.
GODDAMIT!!!!

I hadn't even considered the possibility of fancy bracelets.

My whole plan is ruined... minutes of brainstorming.... wasted.
Well they're gonna need to have fancy bracelets if they are gonna be bright blue and be pretentious bastards about it.

It's okay though, there are just some things the human mind isn't prepared to understand.
Dammitall. My limited imagination stopped at haircuts.

Perhaps you should spear head this revolt. I'll just get to work on the food dyes and NANOBOTS!

Because I understand that shit..... honestly. :D
Perhaps we can make money off all this.

You create the nanobots and work on the food dye, and I can slowly start to buy out all the manufacturers of said bracelets and create a monopoly. So because they are now bright blue from the dye and nanobots they need to have bracelets, which I supply, then profit.

Yes...yes...this can work!
SEE.

This... This is why you're the new plan guy!
SWEET!

Then I wanna build a place where we can dive off of a diving board into the vast amount of money like Scrooge McDuck!

Not at all. You'll find the same hypocrisy applies to just about every minority that exists on the planet.
Also this guy makes a good point on the issue:
Skip to about 1:00. the author doesn't seem to understand the concept of moderation when it comes to intros. And also, don't comment about how he's ripping off Yahtzee, I'm well aware of that.
He's got a few good points but nothing that really can't be countered with "you're using some vague generalisations"

also on the 'the yahtzee ripping off' comment, i'd say his voice trumps the ripping off thing...because boy that was a bit on the annoying side
Maybe so, but his comments near the end, and perhaps I should've pointed this out in my original post, are what I found to be the his most compelling points. If it's ok to make fun of one group, it should be ok to make fun of every group. These minorities want to be treated as equals, but their not being treated as equals; they're being treated like the special needs students in school. And whenever someone actually tries to treat them as an equal ie subjecting them to the same ridicule, criticism, and/or satire they'd subject anyone else to, they cry foul.

I actually remember being told that I was racist for saying "Black guy" once or twice.
People's views on racism are really warped these days. 90% of people forget that black people can be just as racist as white people, maybe more so. I remember a couple of months back that a guy in my school was almost beat to death for being white, and it was all down to him being "Racist". Turns out, it was a false accusation. Once the kids had finally gotten back to school after being questioned by the police / temporarily kicked out of school, everyone hated them for being racist. The whole racism thing is a double-edged sword. If it's real, it's real, but acting on racism makes you just as bad, and if it's fake, it's worse! There are black and white people alike that are pissed off at people using it as an excuse. I'm one of them. Now I have to say, discrimination is part of our culture, and you can actually use it to have a laugh if used correctly, but it seems racism is too taboo to be taken lightly, and I don't see why. Making jokes about white/black stereotypes can be funny AND unoffensive, and many comedians have proved it, we just seem to forget it... I remember a few weeks back a white girl calling her black boyfriend "hot chocolate" in public. I found it to be hilarious AND racist. It kinda shows that racism doesn't have to be bad. I...think.... Amidoinitrite?

[If I offend anyone, pity and shame me.]

Basically this. Though, for some reason, nobody remembers the black panthers.
It's probably because some people have never heard of them. Don't know if it's different in the US (or elsewhere) but the first time i heard about the black panthers was when i watched forest gump. We had just done a 6 week block in history about the whole civil rights movement, the whole bus protest, protest marches, 'I have a dream' story, but not once did we hear about any of the more 'unsavory' elements of the movement. I think some people want to paint a rosy picture of the oppressed group to make a more palatable story which is something we should never do, the entire truth of history needs to be told otherwise we end up repeating mistakes that we should never have forgotten.

I'm not proud to be white, anymore then I think people should be proud to black-skin colour makes no difference to me. I do feel proud of my nationality though (hoorah for the British Empire!) but I remember the negative things about this as well (boo for the British Empire!).

The problem with "White pride/power" is that its been used so much by vocal racists and extremists with no real idea of what their being proud of, they just want an excuse to beat up anyone of a different excuse.

I'm proud to be white (but I'm much prouder of being English) and I make no apologies for that. If I hear someone disparaging my race and my culture I will stand up and defend it because, while we've done some bad things, we've done some great, amazing things (e.g. a lot of modern medical and scientific advances).

The reason its not normal to stand up and shout "White Power" is because we already have all the power. If a black person (or another minority, e.g. a homosexual) does it, its about empowerment of the disenfranchised and downtrodden. If a white person does it, its either boasting or an expression of insecurity. There's also the issue of motivation. Your average white pride rally is usually comprised of violent, right wing, racist, xenophobic borderline fascists bent on cleansing society of everyone different to them. Your average black or gay or whatever pride march is, like I said, a way of representing a group under-represented in society.

There's nothing wrong with taking pride in your culture, history and ancestry, just don't be a dick about it.

I agree with what you're saying OP, and I like to extend your example about calling an African-american man a dick (becuase he WAS a dick, not becuase of his ethnicity), and briefly bring up when the same situation happens - but agaisnt tall people. Or short people. Or fat people. Or thin people. Or women. Or men. Or homosexuals. Or heterosexuals. I could go on.

The fact is, this kind of thing will happen for as long as humanity is either astoundingly narrow-minded, or extremely politically correct (as is the case now. I hate out current environment.)

being Politically correct can go fuck itself in it's Ass. If your white then good for you! If your Black,Yellow,Brown Whatever and proud , then good for you. It perplexes me how just because your white and you say you are proud of being white you are automatically labeled as racist.

You've clearly never been to South Lyon.

All the real racism I see today is against Muslims, yet when you say "Racist" people immediately think of blacks. Hell, you can't even call someone black without being racist, you have to call them "African-American." Unless they personally immigrated from Africa, they shouldn't be called that at all. Should white people be called European-Americans? No. It's stupid. Most black people I know don't care about being called black if it's not derogatory, yet the liberal that want "Equality for all" single them out even more, because it's clearly offensive.

It just annoys me when black people take advantage of this and shout "RACIST!" then sue the shit out of people for nothing, while Muslims are constantly being persecuted and saying very little about it.

I'm not hating on anyone, that's just something that annoys me.

Take a trip down to the cities west of Ypsi and South of Ann Arbor. Saline, Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester can be pretty bad at times.

You're definitely spot on. Sure the older stuff gets taught later in High School (if you make it that far or take those classes) but for the most part we're taught a whole bunch of BS when we're young and we remember that shit for life. People want to believe it was all happy and ignore all the violence committed by both sides (cause apparently it was only White Police who were violent, and even then they just sprayed water on them), but nobody ever mentions the rioting in LA, Detroit, and New York.

OT: OP I see what you mean, and if someone is standing up and saying "I'm proud to be X and deserve compensation for what my ancestors went through" then they can fuck off. But like some other people have said, for the most part when people say that today it's because they've been persecuted recently and using it as a shield. The world would be a better place if everything was equal, but unfortunately it isn't, the best we can do is just try anyway

I am proud of who I am, not my race, not my gender, not my sexuality. Those are simply parts of me that are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. I will not be proud of my race because that begets a feeling of superiority.

I'm not uncomfortable with being white. Honestly, I want to help people that still deal with the kind of shit that was brought on them by white men that they're still dealing with, but I don't feel guilty either. I just want to fix what was started. Racism has to stop, in all forms. Racial pride from anyone is a load of bullshit, in my opinion because it promotes a feeling of superiority over people with a different skin colour. Don't be proud of what you are, be proud of who you are.

You are not a race, you are a human.

Added note:

Anecdotally, nobody tends to call non-heterosexual white males (the non applying to all three) on issues of racism, sexism or the other kind of sexism colloquially referred to as homophobia. I don't think we should stop calling white guys on acting offensively, but I'm not above pointing out to my gay, female and non-white (and their combinations, of course) friends when they act sexist or racist. It's become far too common to overlook issues of race, gender and sexuality when "the man" (if I can be forgiven for using that) isn't under the spotlight.

Well its because we are the majority in a lot of places and therefore its easy for people to accuse us of being against the minorities. Oh well.

On a related note,
Men in general have the same problem.

Feminists are widely accepted, but anyone who puts forward male priorities is pronounced a sexist bastard.
Oh, your game is about an intelligent, brave little girl protecting her stupid older brother? That's cool.
What!? Your game is about a man ordering around his younger sister? What, like women are only there to be controlled by men? SEXIST!

Recently at my school, there have been programs run to give indigenous (Aboriginal) people a better education and more job opportunities. I believe that is racist.

Think about it. They're not asking "Which students need this support", they're saying "Aboriginal people are poorly educated and we need to help them". There are large amount of homeless Aboriginal people in the nearby areas, but they're not saying "Give homeless/disadvantaged people some help". They're saying "Only help black people."

I'm Australian. I happen to have white skin, and I'm (presumably) descended from European settlers who only arrived here recently. I've got a stable family, a good home, and reasonable school grades. I don't need support. But I wish that people who do need it will get it.

OT: Stop acting like someone's skin colour changes what sort of person they are. "Black" is not a culture, it's a colour. Same with white, or red, or yellow. We are people, from different countries and cultures.

Interesting post, OP.

Personally I'm no more a fan of the black guy who is proud to be black than I am of the white guy who is proud to be white. They're both racist pricks.

I also don't like people who are proud of their nationality, or proud of their sexuality, or proud of being a part of any other arbitrarily defined group.

This post is not written angrily, nor is it supposed to be interpreted as a rant. Imagine an emotionless robot is voicing this opinion:

Yes, white people can pretty much be called racists but cannot suffer from racism.
The same way men can be sexist but women can't be sexist against men.

Obviously I am not saying it is impossible to for either of the above to happen, but the world by and large ignores instances and makes excuses along the way for why it's not true.

An example:

If a male boss told a young female employee "You are very pretty, I'd like you to stand and greet customers".

He could be called a sexist pig, she could probably sue him for mistreating her by only valuing her appearance, and exploiting her body, treating her different just for being a young woman.[footnote] I am not saying all women would do this, I am suggesting the possibility and peoples reaction if they did.[/footnote]

A female boss says to a male employee "You are a strong man, can you lift this for me?"

Can you imagine the reaction a man would get if they tried to claim this was sexist? That they were having their body exploited, treated differently because they were a male and therefore more useful for carrying things than other tasks? The funniest thing is that this one actually happens to me every time the women at work want help with something.

The same thing can go for race, religion and all other manner of things. Now obviously this is due to some of the bad things that have been done in the past. White people enslaved black people, men used to (and in some cultures still do) consider themselves to be superior to women, and Christianity is a religion that very few people threaten to kill over, and so it's an easy target.

It still doesn't make it fair.

Regardless of history, what has been done by whom and why, racism, sexism and whatever the term is for hating specific religions (as opposed to all of them) is, it is not fair and it is not right. All should be treated equally and fairly, and only then can these things truly disappear.

I agree with this. They should most certainly never be ashamed of it, but to be proud of something you have no choice or say in makes absolutely no sense to me at all.
