Spies hardly give me trouble cause I seen some dumb motherfuckers play as Spies.

1) They play as scout, which they know that it stupid cause they cannot re-create the speed. Same as heavy.
2) When they cloak, they make sure to do it in the open.
3) They backstab in a crowded room. Enuff said.
Disguising as a heavy can be good if the enemy has a lot of medics.
I've gotten medics to blow ubers as a spy making them think I was going to take a sentry down or push forward.
I've also gotten medics a domination on someone on their own team via their assist on me killing them while healing me.

Disguising as a scout is good if you are ahead of where the rest of the other team would be, and coming back towards them calling medic at the beginning of a game isn't entirely out of the norm.

Disguising as a medic or soldier/demo is good for approaching a bomb cart full of people.

If you want to linger in an area for while, sniper is obvious.

Just don't disguise as a pyro, because a pyro who isn't occasionally spitting out a burst of flame is a dead giveaway.

Also, if you use quickswitch and use last disguise while running towards people so it looks like you're just bored and switching weapons can sometimes help add authenticity to your disguise.

Also, if someone shoots at you, don't run the moment they do. Just stand and look at them, you will take damage, but you usually wont get shot more than once or twice which is survivable, and after that people in that area usually won't give you a second glance.
But that being said, stay out of line of sight as much as possible.

Ehhhh, I agree with everything else, but this? No sir. The spy has the greatest Risk/Reward play style, and even though he isn't my favorite class, I still have the most hours played as him.

If you're discovered, chances are you'll be killed, but if you're not? Well, time to get to work and ruin someone's day.
Well... to be honest it is a pretty bad class if your wanting points, but for fun it is great when you destroy the engineers entire base and then go off to stab the whole enemy team on your way back :D

Also in terms of team work then the spy is essential against turtleing, preferably not demolishing them, but stopping them being set up in the first place.

3. ive never won a game i stayed in, and guess who the blame goes to?

4. spy=cheater. seriously, ive been up against the wall and i get backstabbed. and when i try to disguise myself and backstab? knife never goes up to imply that i can backstab when im RIGHT ON THEIR BACK!!! then i get killed

1) Lies, your doing it wrong. Go onto the server browser and if you get kicked from them before you can join several, then restart the application as I've had that and a restart solved issues.

2) ...You will only get booted for having a shit ping. No other reason... unless your being annoying that is.

3) So you never open your mouth and suddenly when things go to shit you get blamed? Lie.
Shut your gob and start playing more. If you want to talk then don't criticise others as that breaks the team apart and you find yourself hating your allies. Advise and inform with information of the battlefield. If you get annoyed, keep it to yourself or immediately quit... still keeping it to yourself.

4) The infamous Face-stab-your-back occurs when your ping is shite. You lag but they do not so they have killed you on the server before you turn on your screen but you die.
Your fault, get a better internet connection.

Also, if spies are rampant then pay as a pyro and "spy check". Basically try to set team mates on fire... if they are on fire, they are an enemy spy, keep flaming them.

Uhhh... you're right it doesn't get better.
On the other hand YOU can get better. No offence but 20 hours is not a lot of time to have put into this game and expect to be competent at it.

I've got around 450 hours clocked. I like to consider myself proficient but I'm by no means unstoppable. I'm sure some people have even longer play times and have still not got to a decent level of play.

Connection errors... you're on your own there buddy. Must be something going wrong your end.

Also, playing Spy is not cheating... Everyone knows that playing Pyro is cheating :p

Curse your lack of skill whatsoever damn Pyro's!!

Disclaimer: This is a jooooke for the record. Yes playing Pyro is a perfectly viable class. Just not when you run at your opponent from 100 yards away, flamethrower blazing all the way like your life depended on holding down W+M1.

Wow. none of that has ever happened to me. Sometimes I played with assholes, but I never got kicked for being a bad player or had animations fail on me. I get lag sometimes, but nothing like that. Sorry for your technical issues.

That sounds like complaints about Left 4 Dead that I've heard as well. With all the crap Xbox Live gets for having 12 year olds shouting, at least that's nowhere near as bad as the unexplained booting (probably for the lulz).

1: Search for "n00b" servers, I recommend LotusClan servers (I think they have some US ones) and maybe UKMD, as we've got some Americans too and they seem to do just fine.

2: Stop typing, start either talking or just playing. Communication is important in TF2, it's TEAM Fortress 2 afterall.

3: Stop using the Spy. It's an incredibly hard class to be, and not for beginning players. Start with the Soldier, the Sniper or Medic. Those 3 give you a completely different perspective on the battlefield and can teach you valuable lessons.
Lotus, eh? I wonder if we've ever killed each other. Granted, I frequent The Roost's 2Fort server mostly nowadays. Good players, almost no assholes, zero tolerance for spawn camping.

But you can get by with just typing. I don't have a mic (I always felt weird about talking into a computer...don't know why).

And, yeah. I hate playing the spy. It's my second least played class (after the Sniper...because I don't like snipers on principle). I can't tell you how many times I've been sneaking around the enemy base, then picked a good spot to recharge my cloak...then comes someone on my team who stands in front of me and draws in an enemy Pyro. My own team gets me killed more than anything. 400 hours in and I still hate being a Spy.

Seriously, if you can't connect to servers, it's a problem on your end, as everyone here can attest to, don't hate the game for you having connection issues, check your firewalls and router.

It's either Dick servers, it's not the games fault, some community members are dicks, join the escapist server or something, it's a good server, with friendly peeps from the escapist, or if you're getting kicked all the time you MUST be being annoying, EVERY server isn't going to kick you without good reason.

I find it hard to believe that you've never won a single game and that everyone ALWAYS blames you, that's some serious exaggeration going or, or you're making shit up, or are extremely annoying, I don't see how anyone would specificially blame you for losing the matches, in fact I've never seen anyone blame anyone else for being the sole reason for losing, or even shout at anyone, except maybe a medic being piss poor and not healing, and if it happens to you ALL THE TIME!11! You must be doing something seriously annoying to piss them off.

Spy is also one of the hardest classes to master, just practice or try a different class, or you've got a terrible internet connection, where by it looks like you're getting facestabbed but you're actually not, and explains why you can't stab them properly, sort the servers by ping and join one with 60 ping or something.

Then what's the point of this thread? If you're taking a pesimistic view point fewk off and stop playing it, there's nothing anybody can say and there's no discussion here.

1) That's a problem on your end. I get over a thousand matches and always connect to one.

2) I've never seen anyone booted for being a bad player, only a bad person.

3) I'll skip this one

4) The backstab radius is 180 degrees. Being up against a wall will not stop backstabs. Spy has the steepest learning curve on all of the classes.

The only advice I can offer is that you play with friends. The game's free now, so unless they just hate FPS games, it shouldn't be too hard to convince a handful of friends to pick the game up. Once you're playing only with people you know, even losing becomes more fun.

i have, noone would let me join

i dont chat at all, dont even have a mic, but i see what they type in and hear what they say

if its a crap class then why am i getting beaten to death with it?
Because you're a newby. That's all. Seriously, Spies are the class that prey on new players who don't know how to recognise them. By 20 hours you've definitely got the obvious stuff when it comes to spotting disguised spies like you can't walk through them and they'll try to avoid being hit, they won't shoot etc. However there's far more subtle stuff, they'll usually make "eye contact" with you if you're approaching them whereas people who are actually on your team won't pay you that much attention. Stuff like that which you'll only be able to recognise with experience. On the flip side some of them will deliberately avoid looking at you and you can spot that too. Some classes are used more commonly as disguises like pyro (appropriate walking speed, short range primary to explain why they're not shooting, they usually flank etc) however some spies deliberately disguise as scout and just don't move around much because most people don't expect the scout. I could go on for a while trust me.

Also I find it hard to believe no one lets you join, use the server browser and find a low ping server and you should be set.

Also I love how every time there's a TF2 bashing thread on the escapist everyone jumps in for the scrimmage.
"eye contact"? damn, I've never heard that one before, I'll keep an eye out for it. I tend to point my gun towards advancing teammates to spycheck them, so I guess that's why nobody ever trusts me haha

OT: if spies are giving you crap, learn to turn around randomly. And do it a lot. Like people have been saying, play a lot. I know you said you've played 20 hours, but play "easier" classes like Pyro, Soldier, Heavy, or even Engie. as an Engie you can set up a sentry and run around the area checking for spies, supporting your teammates, providing cover fire for your sentry, etc. It's always good to flank heavies and whatnot that assault your sentry.

And just don't let the people blaming you for stuff get to you. TF2 takes time to learn, as everyone's said before.

Just this week I downloaded TF2 as well and I really haven't encountered any of these problems to be honest. The spy is actually pretty balanced he might seem strong when your new but heres a protip. Play a heavy and put a bullet into everyone you see. If blood comes out of them from the first bullet than keep firing. The spy has low HP and will die extremely quickly. This has yet to fail for me.

Don't worry, I don't like TF2 either. It almost reminds me of the Resistance multiplayer in that it's so chaotic that I can hardly ever tell what's going on. I like multiplayer games that are more organized. Like Battlefield.

And the TF2 community sucks too. Whenever I play, I play offline against bots.

I really don't know what you want from us on the forums. You just said you didn't want to hear "it gets better later", so if you don't want consolement, this just sounds like a rant on TF2 to me. And what's at the root of that? Rookie frustrations?
Look, nobody can make you like a game, either you practise for yourself (20 hours isn't the cap of it) or you quit and go play something you do enjoy.
For the most part you just have to let stuff go. People are being mean to you? Ignore them! They're the ones with the problem (especially if they're focusing on you [losing] and not watching the enemy 0.o). You lose a game? Big deal! On average you should be winning 50% and losing 50%, that's just simple statistics. What matters is that you just have fun during the game.
Of course that will include you dying sometimes. It's part of the game. And backstabbing is a legitimate strategy for that. But if they're really pissing you off, you could always switch to Pyro and give those spies something to run from.
Like you said, you didn't want to hear it, so I'm not going to tell you. But what I will tell you, and it needs to be said, is that the problem is with the way you look at things and not because of the way the game is.

Um... I've been playing for hours recently and not having a single issue. Other than a bit of lag, which is my internet's problem more than anything, it's working perfectly fine to me.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but most people in TF2 (at least the servers I play on) say it takes roughly 100 hours of play time on one character to understand the basics, and when I casually mention my 250+ hours on scout I still hear people tell me how I can do things better.

With only 20 hours you are, by definition, a noob to most of the player base. But keep in mind, this game has been out for years, and most people who play (at least play it well) have stockpiled many countless hours into it. These are the people you will have to contend with, and it's not easy.

Now, player skill aside, you may have issues with ping, I personally won't play a server with 80+ latency.

Find a server you have good connection to, repeatedly play on that server or other servers affiliated with it, get to know the admins and usual crowd of players, and ask for tips. Never, ever, ever be a jackass, especially if you're new, and sometimes you'll have to bite the bullet and deal with jackass admins and usual players. You'll learn the game through experience, but after only 20 hours of gameplay you probably don't really know how to deal with every situation.

TL;DR: This isn't Call of Duty or Halo, 20 hours of gameplay means nothing.
What? You must be kidding. I may have about 40 hours of gameplay and I consider myself above average. Usually top 3 on the team. Not as good as in Cod's, but still it's not bad. And I play well with most classes, even classes like Solier which I've only played 3 or 4 hours with him.
That is peculiar, though you're probably not playing with the same crowd I play with. Pretty much all the regulars on the server I play with has somewhere between 600-1400+ hours of total playtime, and from personal experience if you aren't someone with with that kind of time it's really obvious.

I play on NewbsTF2 (ironically) and the name invites a lot of new players (especially now with so many free to players) so I will admit to taking advantage of them, but when regulars show up it becomes very noticeable.
