I love movies and have an obsessive tendency to keep up with the news. So I was checking out one of my favourite sites and came across this [http://www.moviemake-out.com/2008/07/10/no-shit-robert-downey-jr-is-sherlock-also-is-favreau-on-iron-man-2-finally/] article. Guy Ritchie (one of my favourite directors) is directing a new Sherlock Holmes movie (one of my favourite characters) and Robert Downey Jr. (one of my favourite actors) is starring. The producers all seem to have varying qualities of past films (one did The Departed and 10,000 BC, don't ask me how), but I'm going to assume everything will be alright. Personally, my favourite Sherlock Holmes was Jeremy Brett, but as great as he was I think Downey Jr. might just do it better. So even though it's not scheduled for release until 2010 or so, I'm still very excited.

Is anyone else excited about this, or perhaps about an even greater film on the horizon?

I'm kinda excited about this one, I love Holmes and I think Downey could do an excellent job with the character, despite not looking remotely like him. I'm also interested to see how the Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrel comedy will turn out as both of them can act and kinda look like the parts they'd be playing, depends more on the writers/directors whether or not I'll see that one.

Holmes is Public Domain, so anyone could make a Sherlock Holmes movie if they wanted, I assume both projects were in mind but when one studio announced their big holmes project, the other studio wanted to get theirs out as well to keep interest high.

(sigh) the only decent adaptation of Sherlock Holmes in the last 20 years was by Data.

I have a feeling yet another British institution shall be butchered by Hollywood. Even though being done by an English director Ritchie is more suited to cockney gangster films than ones involving a toffy Edwardian detective and his constant purely platonic companion, he's going to try and make it all gritty by illustrating Holmes drug use as some over hanging addiction the bane of his life. the film should be refined and have ubiquitous use of fog...and be in black and white and have that crackly sound you get on ancient films and records.

you may be able to tell I'm not greatly fond of contemporary films

Has that phrase ever been uttered or written before in the history of mankind? Has anyone ever said anything laudatory (or even kind) about Guy Ritchie before? I don't know any of the man's work so I honestly have no opinion of his talent, but I was under the impression that his only talent was considered to be impressing Madonna. I mean, if you walked out half way through "Swept Away" or "Revolver", you could catch the other half on cable when you got home. Am I missing something?

Agree about Robert Downy Jr. When he's on (and straight), he's excellent.

I'd have to wait and see this movie before I juge the acting of Mister Downy Jr. I don't consider super hero movies as real acting. Why? The movies tends to focus on action more than anything.

Guy Ritchie directed the awesomeness that is "Snatch" and "Lock stock and two smoking barrels" right?

If so, i'm exited too.

Well, I just heard about this movie coming out in 2009 called Avatar. It's directed by James Cameron, and he worked on developing this crazy new 3D camera for it. He's likening the level of innovation to when they added sound and color to movies. If that proves true then it should be pretty amazing.

Have to agree on Brett. Before seeing the The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, I thought Basil Rathbone was the Sherlock Holmes. My opinion was immediately changed.

On the other hand, I watched one Holmes-movie where Sherlock was played by an actor who I first thought was playing Lestrade. Hell, I had to stop watching it.

I haven't seen Downey in any movie I've watched, but I've heard lots of good things about him. I assume the movie's not going to fail.

werepossum: I adored Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels. I also liked Snatch, and was misled into thinking he directed Layer Cake but he didn't, so that shouldn't count but it did sort of. *cough*

Random argument man: Have you seen Chaplin, Zodiac or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? He's been in other roles.

I wasn't actually badmouthing him - I've never seen anything he's done to my knowledge - I was just surprised that someone was looking forward to see a Guy Ritchie movie because I've only heard snide remarks about his talent or lack thereof. I've no opinion either way (beyond mild surprise.)

Sounds neat. Whenever someone told me to read one of the Sherlock books, I always said I'd wait for the movie.

Damn 2010. That's too long for this.

Who's going to play Watson? You got Robert Sean Leonard playing a modern Watson (Wilson from House).

if Ritchie is directing the doctor will probably be Madonna and everyone will be like "I think it was such an original idea to make Watson a feisty woman character really bringing the Arthur Conan Doyle classic into the 21st century"and a little part of me will die....god I miss good films shame they've decided to stop making them

Maybe I should download the film this weekend. It will have to wait, right now, watching some Johnny Dep and Al pacino movies. Who knows? Maybe It will make me interested to write a review (but it will probably be full of grammar horrors).

HSIAMetalKing: How old are you?

zirnitra: Haven't you seen the trailer for RocknRolla? He's returning to his roots; adding Gerard Butler's abs instead of a certain blondie. But it does spark a new discussion. Who should play Watson? My first thought is Billy Connelly, but that's pretty obviously a bad idea.

I think Stephen Fry would be fantastic

EDIT I just saw someone's quote about House and that reminded me of Fry and Laurie. if they started working together again and did a Sherlock Holmes (played it straight not comically) I might actually consider seeing it.

Not precisely true.

The good movie:crap movie ratio has never been particularly high. It's just that the crap from decades past is forgotten, while today's turds remain fresh and steaming in our memories. And there are always lots and lots of them, no matter what year it is.

Still, if you're looking for great contemporary audiovisual entertainment, I'll admit that TV provides a more fertile field than the theatres these days.
