I'm tired of playing violent games.

How comes Ace Attorney hasn't been brought up yet?

In any case it is now!
Play it.

Does Minecraft count? I mean it has fighting monsters and stuff, but it's mostly about exploring and surviving, and it's awesome.

Heavy Rain is certainly violent, but its unique style of interaction also allows for domestic drama and other forms of gameplay that are not centered around violence. It's a very unique and awesome experience.

Animal Crossing is freakin' addicting.

You should also try Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Both have violence, but neither have it in its traditional video game ways, so you certainly shouldn't be bored by it. Incredible games.

My first thought was racing games, as in driving. But quite a few of those get kicks from deliberately violent driving. Burnout Paradise, NFS, Midnight Club. I guess Forza, GT, Grid and Shift are less so. Anyhow, these are the games I play because I enjoy them and they provide a complete break from the shooters and RPGs that I usually play. Currently battling Dark Souls, in which I think violence comes across a bit differently in the context of you already being dead.

Note: Having said that, I am totally going to f**k up that Capra Demon tonight!!!

It's an interesting question. The thing is, as a relatively young form of media and one somewhat constrained by its nature, video games have a fairly difficult time delivering both the rudiments of a story and conflict- the "meat" of most stories, and an essential component of a game- without resorting to violence. Violence is relatively easy to depict, especially compared to, say, diplomacy or architecture, in a way that is satisfying to the player and feels consistent with our expectations.

And, yes, games like Mario and Sonic are violent. They're not Mortal Kombat- there isn't a lot of blood, viscera, snapping bones, and mayhem- but the player is still encouraged to destroy enemies who are portrayed as intelligent creatures, and destruction of same is often an important part of progress, or at least difficult to avoid. Unfortunately, on that account, I can't recommend Braid for the same reason.

Looking through my Steam list, though, there are a few contenders. PopCap has some good offerings, including games like Peggle and Bookworm. World of Goo has already been mentioned. Audiosurf is also an amusing diversion, though honestly I don't tend to play it more than ten to fifteen minutes at a time. AaAaAA! A Reckless Disregard For Gravity occasionally results in the player smacking their point-of-view face-first into a building with an implication of gruesome results, but there's no outwardly directed violence.

If you like adventure games, Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People has a certain amount of slapstick, but no serious injuries or deaths. There's also the Cooking Mama series on the DS and Wii, which some people love, though others seem to detest the mere mention of it (and in truth, it probably has expanded in its franchise a bit beyond the welcome.)

Eufloria. Osmos. Braid (yes, it has the Super Mario kind of violence, but i never really percieved it as a violent game, enemies are mostly there as a means to solve the puzzle, not as a primary eradication objective),
Limbo (you must have at least heard about it, and while pretty gory, it's never really violent as in you're fighting the bad guys. Running from them, at most.)

Kerbal space program (interesting/unique premise, no violence at all, it's free, worth at least a try).

Pretty much any building strategy/tycoon game.

Settlers 2 with no opponents - sometimes i love to play like that, just expanding my city, exploiting resources, producing and hoarding as many of them as i can.

Knytt Stories (free), Within a deep forest (also free), and probably pretty much anything from Nifflas (not all of it free).

the most obvious genre to me is sport games. If you wanna be really pedantic, don't play any contact sports, but there are still plenty of non-violent sport games out there. Then again, if you don't like the sport, odds are you won't enjoy the video game.
Second genre on the list would be puzzle games, as many people have mentioned. I also sometimes think that the ratio is too big, but there are plenty of non-violent games out there.

Ghost Trick for the DS. It revolves around stopping violence, and is a very very fun puzzle game. Space Chem on the PC is another awesome puzzle game. Audiosurf, World of Goo, Black and White 2 if you choose to play non violently, From Dust, Trials HD on the xbox, Need for Speed anything, Patapon is sorta violent, but changes it up a lot, and probably tons more out there.

I would just like to ad a beginning disclaimer that I am not against violent games. Not that such will stop being from jumping me and arguing against me that I do and that's wrong, given what I've learned from my time here and how defensive people can get.

I do, while I think that all of the pro censorship, "please of think of the children" people out there are idiots. I can agree on one thing, video games do seem to depend on violence too much and too often. There's a lot of violence in movies, too. But they get more variety. It seems like video games are more violent more often than any other media. And while opposing violent video games is stupid, I do think the... ratio could be a little different.

But what I'm looking for is that exception and that smaller part of the ratio. I've been playing video games lately, and to be honest, while I like certain types of violence in video games as much as the next person, especially casting fun magic, that's a pile of fun. I'm getting a little tired of fighting stuff and I would like a break.

And so I was just wondering, other than just sparking a thread about whether violence happens too often or not, or people mentioning non-violent games that they like. I'd also like some help finding some good non-violent games to occupy my time. Because while I do like them, I'm pretty burnt out on them right now.
Have you tried Cargo! The Quest for Gravity? It's like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on happy pills.

There's a core game mechanic wherein the player takes some dwarf-like dudes (called Buddies) on rides in custom-built vehicles so that the Buddies sparkle with joy until they get so excited that they explode into a shower of iridescent flowers (but don't worry, they reappear and launch out of a "volcano" when they explode with fun so they don't die.)

Yes, that's a real game that exists, go buy it, it's on Steam and has fair system requirements.

Holy crap! A better question is, how the heck did I not list it?? Holy crap, I feel like an awful person now... anyway, I second this guy. Some of the best games ever made, these are.

Along similar lines, Professor Layton. All awesome, every one.

Anno 1404 is one of my favourite games, very slow paced, very challenging but rewarding. You can turn off any of the conflict (its a bit of a distraction anyway), and focus on the trade and city building in the infinite game mode. Plus on a good P.C the game looks beautiful.

Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure. While there is *some* violence, the game is extremely weird, cartoony, stylized, and hilarious (essentially, think Looney Tunes violence). Also, most of the "violence" happens when the enemies or puzzles find creative ways to kill your ass. Not to mention it's completely bloodless, and with one notable exception toward the end you never actually have any weapons or actually fight any of the mooks.

When I feel like non-violent gaming, I usually end up with point 'n clicks.
Try the Runaway series by Pendulo studios. You can find them, including demo's, on Steam.

Well Quantum Conundrum is coming out in early 2012

Then there is Portal 2 (w/mods)

From Dust
Amnesia

That's all I can think of right now, I would like to see more "hardcore games" without having the main focus of killing or injuring animals/people/monsters.

Edit:
I think you failed the mission in the old thief games if you killed anybody.

Mario games are kinda cartoony, but still technically kinda violent.
If Mario games are violent, then Charlie Sheen has a sense of respect for women.
You crush, kick and punch mushroom people and turtles while they valiantly defend themselves by shooting at you with bullets and bombs. You throw them off cliffs and into pits of lava. Yes, it is violence filtered through the lens of cartoonish realism but it is violence nonetheless. No one said violence needed to be realistic after all.

Mneah, I can see where you're coming from though. I got the same thing, but then with games a lá Gears of War & any other shooter as of late. I spend my days playing Heroes of Might and Magic VI, still a militairy strategical game, but the aspects also lie on economical structure and expansion. I'm presuming you know of the Heroes of Might and Magic series?

If you rather play a non violent game, perhaps you can try Mercury HG? (PSN & XBLA as far as I know.)
And if you're looking for an -awesome- game with decent platforming challenge and... english accents go for Henry Hatsworth on the DS. Worth a look.
