any woman designed to have enormous breasts is impractical for fighting/any other physical activity (trust me, I am NOT complaining, just making an observation)

The one major thing that annoys me about character design in pretty much every single game I have ever played is high heels on female characters in combat scenarios. I don't know if it's a pet peeve or what, but under no situation would this ever make sense. Even if they had mini-gravity fields to change the forces acting upon the foot, it would still be an option inferior to just putting on some combat boots.

And the fact that no one called out Bioware on it recently when they're supposed to be the pros at character and story made me even more annoyed. I'm looking at you, Miranda.

In other news, Sarah Lyons never puts on her helmet despite the daily 5mm forecast, Altair wears far too much to keep cool in the desert, Cate Archer dons restrictively tight pants, and you would think that Lara Croft, as someone who spends vast amounts of time hacking at vines, would wear long sleeves. Oh yeah, and the pole dancers at Chora's Den/Afterlife wear far too much clothing.

Jesus f*ck!
Look at the size of those things!
I'd class them as a form of protection.
Hey, it's better on the eyes than most shields of that size.
Better than "most" shields?

I'm intrigued; tell me, exactly what types of shields are more pleasing to the eye than a giant pair of finely crafted tits?
IDK, when tits get that big they cease to be pleasing. To me at least.

Most Stormtroopers et al. They're wearing claustrophobic masks that give them terrible field of vision, and make it hard to breathe.

Despite being impractical I actually like the Helghast design.

IMO Team Fortress 2 is the pinnacle of great character design

My personal gripe with character designs almost always has to do with the female designs. I mean, I enjoy the female form as much as the next guy (and probally some girls girls too lets be openminded), but watching a girl run around on a battlefield with a boobtube and miniskirt rips me out of my imersion so fast I get whiplash.

Anyway I think character designs work best when they are very simple. Maby this was just from growing up with games from the 90's where due to display limitations characters had to be simple but distinct so you could identify them at a glance.

Some good designs in my book:

Cloud Strife: Black turtleneck, comfy pants, boots, glove and shoulderpad. Simple, streamline, clear siloete.

Link: Tunic, kilt, bots and hat. Links design has always given me the impression that he is a workman, not afraid of hardwork and roughing it, bouncy little hat notwithstanding.

Agent 47: Business suit, to show he means business. Practical for an assassin too since its fairly unremarkable.

Honestly im waiting for the day a game has a protaginest with just jeans, white shirt and trainers. If this person was a kick arse female well my mind would be blow.

Big Daddy, love the costume, but if your practical, lunging around 3 tons of metal is not good for you. Unless you have been spliced....I mean spliced ALOT.

Don't get me wrong, I love Big Daddies. :)

It is on tvtropes for at reason: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChainmailBikini.

As has been said here and in the tropes it can always be explained by magic or the term Bulletproof nudity.

Pretty much ANY JRPG character is impracticle.

Altair was an interest character as well, along with(but not to such a degree) Enzio. They are good charater design, the eagles beak on the hoods and so on, however, its the worst possible design for an assassin.

And I thought Dante wore the most belts.

Anyways I really dislike the character design of the Unreal Tournament 3 protagonists. It's begs the question: Why didn't they just call it Gears of War 3?

There's not a damn tournament in sight!

An assassin needs to blend into the crowd and wear very light armour to get their work done.
This is why Ezio is an incredible idiot. He wears about 3 layers of colourful clothes and jewellry, distinctly bears the seal of an Assassin, and carries so much he should probably be unable run, at least without making a ton of racket. Even Altair had his bright-white-and-crimson Assassin uniform at all time. Wouldn't it be better to just wear (modified) peasant clothes?
