In your opinion, what's the most overrated video game ever?

I'll throw in another vote for Guild Wars 2; I even got caught up in the hype myself and wanted desperately for it to be a fantastic and innovative experience. While it did do some things right (I still really enjoy the exploration aspect and leveling experience), there were so many other aspects that just left me disappointed. I was so looking forward to the personal story, but that ended up being the biggest letdown of all.

Well I have to say that Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game of all time, so I can't put that on my list. When it comes to a game being "overrated" in my eyes, it is usually because the game is built up so much by my friends. The main offender to me would have to be Bioshock. For around 3 years now, people around me wouldn't shut up about how great it was. I finally got around to playing it last year, and the game just struck me as very average. Now don't misunderstand, I thought the themes and the setting were very thought provoking but that's not why I play video games. When it came down to the gameplay, I just wasn't very impressed.

Anything made by the hacks at Valve besides Half Life 1 and Portal 1.
The N64 Legend of Zeldas. (Handheld ones are soooo much better.)
Any Final Fantasy past 6.
Call of Duty (Any)

It's very hard to say, because different circles put hype on different games. For me, back around five years ago, I would have said FF7. However at this point everyone, I've heard from has agreed the game is very love/hate, I'm on the side of hatred. Lately I've heard some positive comments about FF13, so my vote goes to FF13 because I think there is very low quality there. Same could be said about the recently released DmC. In my opinion, they do not deserve average scores.

FF7- Maybe because I played it looooong after its initial release, but it didn't really impress me and bored me to tears.
Morrowind- Same as above.
Far Cry 2- It's just a straight up turd. A polished turd, but still a turd.
Halo series- I think they're decent games, but not the crown jewels they're made out to be.
Mass Effect 1- Great story, but it's tragically short and is padded with filler to make it seem longer.

Halo.

I just never got what the big hairy deal was about it - it always struck me as nothing more than a generic FPS that Microsoft had turned to "family friendly" mode. Couldn't bring myself to get through more than maybe half of the first game before I just gave up in boredom.

I don't know about this. On one side there's certain games you always see when talking about overrated games. Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy 7 is two games that come to mind. But when I see top lists about Final Fantasy or Zelda it's not way too often I see these two games even in the top 3. I think overrated is kinda an overused word. I never use the word overrated really cause I feel that people can like their games how much they want and I don't wanna tell them that their opinions about a game is too good etc. But that's just me.

Overrated by fans - Half Life 2. It is fun. But honestly, I never wanted to replay it. Still don't.

Overrated by the official reviewers - Mass Effect 3. This is where it became painfully obvious that every major reviewer was bought by EA. The fact that no one mentioned anything about the ending, auto dialogue and how the choices don't matter at all throughout the game (Rachni queen, Collector base) makes it pretty obvious.
As much as I agree ME3 got way to high of ratings and the reviewers were blind can we stop this notion that EA is paying them off? Doesn't it occur to people that either the people are lazy, appeasers, or just have a different opinion?

Just to make things easier lets do this pictorially

That should clear up any confusion.

OT: Oh dear god are there a lot of them. (Note, these games aren't necessarily BAD, just not as good as advertised)
Borderlands
Knights of the Old Republic 2
New Vegas
Skyrim
Mass Effect 1
Starcraft 2
Company of Heroes
Rome: Total War

I'm going to go hide in my anti-flame bunker now.

Grand Theft Auto 4.

Not only did it not do anything really new in the GTA world accept add fluff gameplay, it's been praised up the ying yang as the top 5 best games ever. A game that had poor controls and features across the board from cover base shooting to flying helicopters. Not only that, but the game was boring and not even the best in the series, and it's being placed next to Ocarina as one of the best games evAR??

Go...

I came into this thread thinking Final Fantasy 7 too.

I guess Crysis is another one for me. Sure it's a stunningly beautiful game, and technological benchmark for gaming, but it's not much of a game at all, it has a gimmick to make it more complex than it needs to be but it's no better than the new Syndicate FPS really (in terms of gameplay).

Ya know, everyone is bashing FF7 because it seems to have a popularity with it for being "too famous". I think the over popular games are twofold. First, is Psychonauts. Sure, its a fun game, but it isn't AS amazing as it is made out to be.

And then, Okami. Yeah, its artsy and stuff, and the story is supposed to be..well, awesome. But, it never struck me as all that fantastic. It is a different take on games, but it isn't something to gush over all the time.

Nintendo first party games.

All the bloody time, I hear gamers preach about how;
"Super Mario/Zelda etc. games are the best games ever made!"
and how
"Nintendo does not just release the same game each generation! They vastly improve gameplay and graphics!"

Honestly, I'm glad that I was disinterested in my brother's N64 as a child: every time I meet someone who was "raised" by Nintendo games, it feels like I'm talking to a cult recruiter.

The games aren't even that good:

Super Mario(any of them)<Braid & Quantum Conundrum(I liked the platforming as it felt like I was making an out-of the box decision when choosing how to progress to the next level)

Zelda>Dragon Age Origins & KoTOR II, hell even Borderlands 1 beats Zelda outright(deeper RPG elements, more interesting dungeons & loot, not to mention gripping stories(except for Borderlands 1))

Metroid, out of all Nintendo first party games, is the only one that I feel deserves its praise.
I agree, but you used wrong symbol in between Zelda and Dragon Age
Strange, I was using the more than/less than sign.

Does it work now? > <

Goldeneye 64.

It was a game that for the time looked, sounded and controlled terribly.

Yet because it allowed four players on one console, people proclaim it to be the second coming!
