The incest link to end all incest links [http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/nmmjr/iama_man_who_had_a_sexual_relationship_with_his/]

If you've never seen this reddit AMA, be prepared to for full on train-wreck-can't-look-away coupled with feeling horribly dirty.

As for my opinion...no. More than enough people around that you don't have to go looking around the ol' family tree.

Sophisticated mammals, our cousins, have set up social norms that seem to minimize incest naturally, free of moral conditioning, where as homosexuality in animals runs rampant and is harmless. This is true of Apes and wolves, for example. These creatures function on raw instinct. Incest is still in the animal kingdom all over the place, but for the ones most similar to us, it seems to be minimal.
The problem with evolutionary psychology is, that it's not necessarily compatible with modern morality.

Yes, there is the Westermarck effect, but nature also tells us to find the people most similar to us physically the most attractive, as a way to separate herds from each other, keep a breeding community closed to outsider groups, and prevent the spread of foreign diseases.

So, should we outlaw interracial marriages? After all, these people are going against what nature and science tells the rest of us!

The thing is, that most of these evolutionary psychological effects are often contradicting each other, not shared by us to the same degree, often they are rendered obselete by modern society, and many of them are overwritten by all that human emotional-rational-moral thinking that we are doing.

I am not saying that I disagree with you, but Humans are the only animal capable of having sexual intercourse while preventing the ability to give birth as a result of it. For a species that has a chance of giving birth each time they have sex, it would only be natural for them to be innately steered away from it, or else they increase the chances of genetic issues.

I like it in romance stories, more for the "forbidden love" part of it rather than the actual incest part though.

As for real life; as long as they don't have kids of their own I don't mind.

Absolutely not. One, its just creepy to be physically intimate with a fucking sibling. Two, in some states its illegal. Here in MN, incest is a felony with a max sentence of 10 years.

I think most people are genetically coded to not be attracted to siblings. Thus, those who don't have this code are judged by those who do. I wouldn't judge someone who engaged in it, but I can see why some others would. In different societies the "bar" for incest is different, here in Norway it applies to siblings only and not cousins. Cousins I have no problem with, as there is no chance of in-breeding etc.

I don't think I have anything more useful to say, other than I was never attracted to a sibling, and wouldn't imagine it happening.
You think huh?

Simply from a genetic point of view your sibling's personality is going to resemble yours a lot. So even if you're not attracted to him/her, you'll probably find other persons that resemble your brother/sister attractive, though not consciously for that reason. For that reason the biggest cliché in cheating is cheating on your bf/gf with their brother/sister.

Okay people, incest doesn't cause genetic defects. It just ensures that the existing ones are passed on to the next generation, which can cause all kinds of problems over longer periods of time. An incest baby isn't automatically going to grow up into a flesh eating beast. That said, don't make incest babies. Even if they'll turn out healthy, you're making life more difficult for them. People are going to ask questions.

Personally I couldn't care less. To each their own and whatnot, though I am glad I've never been attracted to a family member. Attraction in itself is such a hassle, wouldn't want to be attracted to someone society doesn't deem acceptable.

Oh look, people playing the genetics card.

Two random unrelated people having children have a roughly 2% chance of that child being born with a genetic abnormality.
Even if two closely-related people having children doubles that risk, that's still only 4%.
The only real risk with inbreeding is it increases the chance for any inherent medical condition to be expressed in the children. Obviously sustained inbreeding would take its toll eventually, but it's emphatically not the case that two cousins happen to shack up and it's suddenly the retard mutant apocalypse.

Anyway, as long as everyone involved consents, I don't care. I don't care so much that I had to type all of this. I just had to.

I don't like it because I think that it is gross because I was raised that way. Still, being a Christian, I don't see anything wrong with being with someone who is your cousin or further in terms of blood relation. Just close siblings like your mom, dad, brothers or sister, and half brothers/sisters. I can't in all honesty say "No, you can never do this with your mom, dad, brother, or sister! I make all the rules and decide what is right and wrong" I only hold myself to my personal standards, not others. But still, I just can't imagine having sex with your own mom. You slid out of that hole that you are putting your wang in however many years ago that you were born, and plus she is waaay older than you.

Well incest increases chance of kids born with defects, though not as much as some think, yet not as little as others do. I heard about a couple who were siblings and half their kids were having problem with brain development.

Consensual sex even without the chance of pregnancy is creepy to me, but people have weird fetishes out there and I don't think incest is the weirdest one.

I have no problem with it until children enter the picture as I understand it leads to increased health risks.

Want to marry your brother/sister? Go for it, please seriously consider adoption.

I don't have the slightest desire to have sex with a family member but a good friend of mine was in a long lasting sexual relationship with her brother and I honestly don't give a shit. Even when I found out I can't begin the explain how little of a fuck I gave. All I saw were two horny people not fucking random strangers and figured it was probably a good idea for them to be honest.

What a man and his sister do behind locked doors is entirely their own business but once offspring start becoming a bi-product of the relationship then, well...

I love the fact that mature discussions gets an mix of mature and immature responses. I'm sure we know who the immature people are in this case.

That being said, incest has multiple points to it. For example, there's a saying that people are attracted to certain people because they remind them of their mother/father. Is that a sort of incest, or is that just logical attraction because you know what to expect of your potential mate since they are a lot like someone who had raised you?

I imagine that people being 'squinchy' about the issue is because they were raised to believe that it's so wrong and so disgusting by society that they need to put up strong barriers against the idea. Or may have had bad experiences with family members who had hit on them or even touched them.

Incest is alright as far as I'm concerned, but please think of the child/ren, prevent a difficult life from happening by not having kids with your sibling.

Inbreeding is gross but the actual act of getting own and dirty with a relative isn't... That bad, I guess. Although there is something about the thought of a parent f-ing their child (who are both of legal age, of course) to be a tad, er, icky.

I personally wouldn't fuck any of my close relatives but I guess if I had, like, a really hot, older sister... No! Bad thoughts!

The thought of anything ever really happening between me and my brother freaks me the fuck out. Or any of my cousins for that matter. Eww no. Ewwwwww no. No. Ewwwwwwww.

But if it's two adults who really want to be together and decide on it together and stick with it, the romantic in me is totally okay with it. That part would even pelt you with rice from the wedding and cry tears of joy.

The rational part worries about genetic disease for a bit and then moves along. That part doesn't really focus long enough on one thing to care much.
