Interesting review Jim, it sounds like I will have a blast with it, especially since I loved the first two games with all my heart.

Although I'm a bit worried about the powers.
It only makes me cringe a little remembering how Deslin's power is to take other powers, I think it is mostly my fault thinking that there will be ten cool looking powers or something.

BUT, there may be expansions in the future hopefully, they may add more powers to that.
That would be nice.

With the repetition, I was used to that from the last few games, so no problem there.

So overall, it looks like I will still have fun.
But the only wish I have is a option to take the beanie off Delsin, it just looks stupid to me.
Other then that, I look forward getting it tomorrow. :p

EDIT: Also, dat "Good son" pun.
[sub][sub]Now I only hope that the electricity power will be in there. Doubt it though. XD[/sub][/sub]

This is pretty off-topic, but... why use a 5 point scale when you're going to use fractions anyway? Why not just go for a 10 or 100 point scale?

I guess this game is the first real reason for me to consider buying a ps4, although I do still want to play infamous 2 first.

I had to kind of bend the star system to my will. It is my hope that we will, indeed, be altering our scale properly in the near future.

From what I have seen the city looks rather lackluster in a Saints Row 3 sort of way.

At least it does have some key locations imitating Seattle

While I liked the first Infamous, Prototype was more entertaining. However, I've yet to play either of the sequels. 2nd son looks pretty damn good but it's not a system seller for me. I'm sure it'll be one of the first games I get but I must still wait until something more appealing comes out.

It's odd that a game that is meant to push a system gets the equivalent of a pretty average score (3.5 stars is ~70/100). Even more so, that it gets such a score while being 'the best inFamous yet.' The series has always been cast as sub par, yet somehow strangely fulfilling, so it makes more sense in context.

It certainly seems inFamous continues to be one of those games that you just have to play yourself to appreciate.

Really looking forward to getting my copy. I really enjoyed the first two, so judging by this review I will really love Second Son. The side missions in the past have always been a little repetitive, but then again I can't really think of an open world game where this isn't the case. Can not wait till tomorrow.

Just one tiny nitpick Jim. In the first game you play as Cole MacGrath not Nathan Cole. Unless that was a shot at the character being too much like Nathan Drake, which I would disagree with.

I kinda wanted to know how power switching compares to the 2nd one. I really liked being able to switch out all my powers and mixing and matching them whenever and however I wanted. Hearing that you have to find a source for your power and just completely switch out to that ability has me a little concerned. Also, does the user created missions make a come back?

Actually, I think the talk of "visual downgrades" was, thankfully in THIS case... FALSE!

I've been jaded after Aliens: Colonial Marines, Watch Dogs, and Dark Souls.
But... look at this:

(E3 on Top, Retail on Bottom)

To me, it looks BETTER than the E3 build!

As a massive fan of the first two games and the fact you thought those meh, but enjoyed this game. Tells me I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this tomorrow.

Good review as always Jim.

Best in the series only garners a 3.5?

The man defends point-scores but makes a joke out of any sort of consistency?

That's what I was gonna say.

inFAMOUS 2 kicked ass, so if this one is going to be even better... Hot diggity dog!

Looks like they'll be reusing a couple of assets though, like killing the street musicians, and having conduit enemies that launch themselves into the air by morphing the environment as opposed to giant icicles.

Honestly, this doesn't look like a visual downgrade at all, just different TV settings. I can't really see any difference in detail, except that the lower one has a few more lights planted in the background.

Thank you Jim for this review. I was considering buying this game. Now I know not to waste my money.

While I like my PS4 a great deal, I hate the touchpad! I want my plain old boring select button back.

For those of you who wish to tell me how awesome the PS4 touchpad is... don't. I don't like the touchpad on my laptop and I bet you don't either. It's barely useful on a laptop, and it's even less useful on a game controller. There are lots of things that Sony does right, but this is not one of them.

The lightning is much better in the final build. There's also additional details and geometry in the final version (such as Delsin's jacket having buttons near the sleeve, more stuff in the background such as an added watchtower, a much better draw distance, better surface reflections, better ambient occlusion and shadows...). This is far more than just TV settings. They re-lit, rearranged, and improved the whole scene. It's an improvement over the E3 version, the total opposite of a downgrade.

I found Infamous leagues better the Prototype and I'm really hoping that this game still has what made the first two good and isn't just catered more to your taste.

Question. Does this game every explain how there are any Conduits?

MASSIVE inFamous 2 spoiler

After the good ending in inFamous 2--which I'm assuming is the official endings, since it says that there are barely any Conduits left--there shouldn't be any of these guys running around. Did the mutation just spring up again or are we told that Cole's sacrifice wasn't as complete as it said it was in the 2nd game?

I'm guessing the latter. I don't like it but I don't think it ever explicitly said that

Cole's sacrifice completely eradicated the conduits.

inFAMOUS 2 is superb, really build on the first and has a pretty good story line with some memorable characters (The protagonist Bertrand being a highlight for me)

Oh and I don't care what any one says, I like Cole, the chemistry between him and Zeke made the second game!

Good to hear the series is still good. I loved the first two and while I agree with Yahtzee that inFAMOUS 2 had enough closure that a third isn't really necessary, I don't mind there being another if it's executed well enough, which it sounds like it has been.

Shame it's only on PS4, though I appreciate what the system does for the game and considering it's a flagship Sony series, I can't really expect much else. It's just that I can't justify buying another system for one interesting exclusive when I'm already saving up for a Wii U. I guess if someone I know gets a PS4 down the line, I'll borrow theirs like I did a friend's PS3 when I played the first two.

Hell, maybe once streaming PS4 games on PSNow becomes a thing, I'll see what devices I can get it on.

Haven't read the review yet but I'm am deathly afraid, since all this years supposed big games have been dalliances into the fields of meh. Really hoping that inFamous justify's my mothers purchase.

EDIT: I'm okay with this and pretty much what I was expecting, but Jim SPOILERS. Didn't know what the third power was, sounds nifty, but hey.

So... This is supposedly the best game of the series, and it get's 3,5/5? Wow Jim, I didn't follow you in your Destructoid years, but did you really thought the first two games were average at best? Geez, I'm almost scared to play this one, because you did like this one, and the more I see of your reviews the more I feel that our gaming tastes are on the completely different ends of the spectrum...

Oh well, nevermind. I loved the first two games. I have a platinum trophy in both, even though I usually don't care about them, so this was (and still is, getting my copy tomorrow) an insta-buy for me no matter if it would get 1/10 or 10/10... Especially since my PS4 started crying from the lack of use after I finished AC IV: Black Flag.

If anybody else had written this article, the score would have been 4.5 or 5 stars. Not at all a complaint though and I'm actually kind of surprised by how few people seem to mind the score being 3.5...Anyway, stupid numerical rating system aside, THIS is one of the games I was waiting for. Now that it's out there are...well it's the second game I want that I can only get on the PS4. I really liked inFamous but Delsin being so damn happy to have his powers is the most refreshing thing I've seen in gaming for a while. Once I do eventually get a PS4, I'll likely grab this to go with it. Great review Jimmothy, Thank God for you!

Fanboys will always rage one way or another when it comes to reviews, but I'm pretty sure most gamers at this point have kinda given up and become sick of it. You can play your Titanfall, I can play my Second Son, and I'm pretty sure we can all be happy.

As for Jim's review itself, he did say in the beginning that he never really got into the Infamous series. You always know something will be swayed in a direction when reviews begin with 'I always loved this series' or 'I could never get into this series'. I actually appreciate Jim's honesty, but I also know that means my opinion of it will be a star higher by default, since I really like the series.

I'm pretty sure Sucker Punch knew they weren't going to make many new fans with Second Son, and looked to make the fans happy while trying a few new things out. Sounds like they did that, working on perfecting new powers, a new engine, and a new city while leaving the gameplay itself familiar, including some of the series' annoyances. Infamous is a sandbox series that tells a VERY specific story, so it can't be GTA or even Assassin's Creed, and people need to understand that.

I was hoping to pick this up at midnight, but the store won't open for it. They have over 50 preorders! Feels kinda lame.

Kinda surprised you only gave this a 3.5, though, Jim. I'm not questioning your judgement, but from how you seemed to be talking I was expecting a solid 4 or 4.5.

You know I agree with you on just liking that Delsin likes his powers. I vividly remember a scene I've seen where his brother asks him if there have been any complications. Delsin stops and thinks saying, "Yeah... There... Nope. This is pretty freaking awesome." I liked Cole just fine, but the fact that Delsin enjoys his powers is not disappointing.

That's OK, Salty. My store had just under 70 preorders (my own collector's edition included) and I have to wait for 10am to get my copy. Apparently, 75 is the magic number.

OT: As for the review score, I like that it's a 7/10. Feels like an honest assessment - a good game bordering on greatness, but not quite there. Though I have to agree with what Yahtzee said years(?) ago, "You can't apply a simple numerical score to something as complex as an opinion and have it work." I paraphrased, obviously, but the general point stands.

SO how much of the last two games' story do I have to know about for this one? There are more than one Superhu- I mean "Conduit" since Cole McGrath? It's like some nutter was just giving away superpowers!

Anyway, between the two, I find the infamous series more appealing than prototype's, especially regarding main characters.

So it's a flop than? And yes I consider 70% a flop when the first was rated much higher.

That's a contradiction that would make it the worst game in the series based off average scores and based off of Meta critic so far it is the worst game in the series. Sad considering I liked the series, oh well hopefully the Order won't flop fingers crossed.

To be honest, having seen the gameplay even though the powers are "different" it looked like it was just different skins on the same stuff as before. Granted I didn't see late game footage either so I can't judge by that, but I wasn't horribly impressed with Infamous (except the vampire version of 2 which should have been a full game, not a damn mini-demo). It wasn't a bad series either, but I just could never bring myself to finish the games.

It's all good. I just got home with my copy. Just about to start it up. :)

No, 3.5/5 is a good score. Angry Joe gave Titanfall a 7/10 for comparisons sake.

I was just a bit surprised that Jim gave it such a "low" score as he sounded to be praising it pretty highly. I suppose a few of his complaints meant more to him than I think they did to me. I am in no way complaining and respect Jim's opinion on the game. I just suspect that I will be giving this game a solid 4/5 or better personally.

I really dislike this game so far. The graphics are nowhere near as impressive as people are saying, and the art design is totally bland. The characters, though not awfully voice-acted (again, I wouldn't say the voice acting is exceptional), are made unbearable by the unbelievably cheesy script. And the moral choices feel SO unbelievable, I went from being a carefree skater kid to a mass-murderer within minutes and the brother character seemed to feel a lot more conflicted about the former than the latter. Add to this the sound, which, while okay, seems to be mixed all wrong, with the music being far too quiet and all sound fading out when you're near-death, which sounds awkward as hell. And the combat itself so far feels really, really clunky, as does the platforming.

Woefully disappointing, in short.

On the other hand, the other game I bought today, Ground Zeroes, was a fantastically polished and well-constructed game - I understand Jim's concerns over the price compared to the length, but hell I'd take it over a mess like this any day, even at the same price. Quality over quantity, and Infamous is definitely not that.

Maybe this is just a personal thing, but GTA V has pretty much spoiled me when it comes to game worlds imitating real world places. Rockstar got virtually every single detail of Los Angeles down, there's almost nothing left and there's some amazing comparison albums out there. It was also last-gen, so setting a game in Seattle and then not copying it extensively, kind of seems like a waste IMO.

Also, it's a little weird canonically, but that's just me nitpicking I guess.

Hey, this review actually read like a 7/10 should, if it wasn't for my honed gaming community instinct to shun anything receiving less than an 85 on metacritic.

Meanwhile, on Gamespot, the poor reviewer is getting his shit pushed in for giving the game an 8. Poor bastard.

Edited because that joke probably wasn't funny.

Hey man, the touchpad is hardly used in this game. And it doesn't feel as forced as Jim makes it out to be. It's only used to drain powers and opening doors.

Ok, just finished the "Good Karma" playthrough. I didn't touch Dark Souls II yet (although I should probably try to finish DS I first, I stopped after it kicked my ass so hard I couldn't sit for a week), and there's that second season of Walking Dead ongoing, and at least one game scheduled to launch this year should be great but... Damn, I think this will one of my main contenders for GOTY come the end of year. It's shorter than the previous games (2 islands instead of three, and only 13 districts overall. I don't know the topography of Seattle, but I assume it's because it was supposed to be similar to the actual city), but gameplay was greatly improved, and it made great series just that much more awesome. I thought that Smoke Powers are the most awesome things ever, but when I got Neon and (especially) Video, I hardly ever used it again (although, this is probably related to Neon and Video powers much more convenient to travel across the city). Nothing is tacked on, everything that is there, has a purpose, and it's to be fun.

The story - it's good. Nothing mind blowing, no plot twists that will make your jaw drop, but it's a solid story featuring really well written characters you can actually sympathize with (or despise).

From me, solid 9/10 and mark of approval. If you have a PS4 and you don't have this one... Well then why the eff did you bought this console at this point anyway? Go to your nearest game shop and buy it. This was a first really worth waiting for exclusive for any new console (I'm excluding Titanfall, because it's on PC as well), and it delivered. Definitely worth your time and money.

I really liked Infamous 1 and 2, and I have zero interest in this game. After 2, I was pretty much done with Infamous gameplay, and this looks like exactly the same stuff, just with a sort of new city and shinier graphics (which incidentally got rid of the comic booky look of the original). I've played Infamous already. I want something new.

Very little. Cole McGrath is not even mentioned in this game. Nor his sidekick Zeke nor any of the other previous characters.

Actually, he is.

...If you have the limited edition, which gives you the Cole's legacy DLC, in which a certain character from the past games returns to directly speak to Delsin. And in another certain flashback at the end of the game, another character is mentioned via a stylized comic drawing.

What comic booky look? The series has always leaned towards realistic looking visuals. Unless you're talking about the cutscenes, which are still there incidentally.

I do actually. I haven't got around it. But my point is, you can get by playing the game without knowing the back story.

Second Son isn't very good anyway. It's basically the first two games but without electric powers, grinding on power cables, blast shard hunting, EXP, or generally fun missions.

It also has this annoying habbit of giving you an entirely new set of powers with only the slightest variation. Which you then have to upgrade from scratch. So say you upgraded the primary "shoot-bang" attack of your Smoke power. Once you get the Neon power you get a nearly identical version of that primary attack, which you then have to pour upgrades into in order bring it up to par. It's totally pointless and feels like a desperate attempt to pad out the game.

It really feels like a game that was crunched out so that the PS4 would have a high profile exclussive close to launch. Just replay the first two games and actually have fun. That's what I'm doing.
