Are they just buying it for its own sake?

The 3DS launch titles are shit and it doesn't look like we're seeing any good titles for months to come. Possibly in a year. So why not hold out on buying one due to the possibility of a price drop?

Granted a price drop is not likely so soon, but better to wait out of the slight possibility than buy at full price for absolutely nothing.

In a few months when the system has more compelling games (and from the sounds of it you haven't seen Nintendo's list of game releases for the time leading up to E3), good luck finding a 3DS in store.

As stated above the DS is like a phone in Japan, plus the Japanese have a strong sense of company loyalty.
Think of our fanboys on crack cocaine, with possibly a little speed in there and you've got them.
Plus why have it later at a possibly cheaper price when you can have it right NOW for full price?
this too

What would happen if there was a 3DS Monster Hunter game?!
I'll tell you what, It would be totally awesome
It would. But how many people would die in the ensuing chaos of a simultaneous 3DS/Monster Hunter launch?

Haha, does anyone really doubt Nintendo OWNS the Japanese market? I love some of the comments. The titles may be shit, the system may be stupid, but Japanese company loyalty is the only real culprit. They want to be able to buy a game they are looking forward to at a moments notice, and probably don't want to worry about tracking down a system when a game finally hits they DO want. Not too mention, it's brandy new electronics, I see the same "useless" fervor with any new iPhone, for gods sake. I still want to see Nintendo maintain a position as a top tier video game producer.

Japan: land of the rising sun...and dumb gimmicks.

But whatever, if you're into the whole 3D thing, then fair enough, don't let me ruin your fun.

Layton is a launch title in Japan btw. That's worth a purchase.

Source was actually a Nikkei article not IGN.

In comparison to other launches this is the biggest day 1 sellthrough that there are numbers for but won't be the biggest week 1 hardware due to the GBA and original DS both having higher shipments (GBA was around 750k with 650k sold and the DS was 500k with 440k sold)

The rest of the shipments appear to be 250k or 300k each weekend and will most likely all vanish very quickly. Second shipment was arriving sometime today/Monday.

Impressions so far are that the streetpass functionality and the AR are superb. The 3DS can also view 3D pictures taken with other devices which is a big plus. Battery life is around 3 hours 20 minutes on full brightness with wifi playing SSFIV and around 6 hours on brightness setting 1 with occasional Wifi playing the same game.

DS games are scaled up to fit the screens though if you hold start+select as you boot up a DS game then you have them in the original resolution which is a nice touch to prevent artifacts etc from scaling.

Link's Awakening is supposed to be one of the first handheld VC games. I'll be buying mine on the 27th and use that and DS games to get some use out of it before the big titles start coming out.

To be fair, considering how every bloody movie has to be in 3D these days and how every new Apple product is so financially successful, not to mention how every console platform needs a motion controller as well... I would say the Japanese are not solitary in that regard.

The real news is that no one was seriously injured or killed when this thing hit the streets. Seriously, people get violent when supply can't meet demand.

I think that is the big idea, have just enough to make them seem in short supply. I remember a certain company doing that with the Wii for like a year or so.
