The shooter/FPS genre SERIOUSLY lacks innovation these days, and I for one am SICK of the grizzled space marine!

And since I'd rather have some of my ideas stolen anyway (I think I'd rather play this game than make it), here's my idea for a different FPS/Shooter.

A game set in the late 1930's that details a Scientific Exploration to the Antarctic that goes horribly wrong due to either a natural disaster or some other catastrophe. The Hero wakes up in The Hollow Earth, a tropical paradise that lies underground where he needs to fight his way through hordes of natural hazards, man eating plants, hostile ape men, paranoid natives, Evil Lizard Men, Superpowered Atlantians and Invading Nazi's using a combination of Improvised Weapons, WW2 Guns and strange Pulp-Super-Tech devices.

Every genre nowadays lacks innovation, it's not just limited to the FPS genre.

Anyways, you could make an underwater FPS, with like harpoons and shit.

A tough guy in space shooting aliens that have attacked earth.... sorry sorry

How about being on a ship (ship ship or space ship doesn't matter) were you do the basics of sea/space faring including some shooting fun in boarding missions. And it could be made into a movie that is rated "ARR"

Mostly I'm just lame and wanted to start a thread about Pulp Adventure... maybe I should just do that one of these days.

Well, Yahtzee had good ideas (gun that shoots velosaraptors was hilarious!).
I would suggest (OMG PedroSteckecilo, that's awesome!) a game where you are a robot-pirate-ninja that rides an orange cow with a laser on it's head to defeat the evil hotdog king that threatens to cover the planet in mustard!.......... AT LEAST I TRIED!!!! (sorry :p)

I always thought a Super Smash Bros Brawl style FPS featuring loads of characters from Xbox games (could work for Sony too, although from what I can gather, Little Big Planet is their answer to SSBB). Characters would include Master Chief, Gordon Freeman (in an ideal world) that guy from Unreal Tourny 3, Marcus Fenix, Ryu Hayabusa, Mass Effect guy, Baldur... you get the idea. If you made it sort of laid back rather than try and explain it all it could be a recipe for win.

A mental patient with dire hallucinations is thrown into a drug euphoria which is supposed to help him battle his mental illness, by manifesting his deepest fears and most horrible hallucinations and making them into solid beings which would slowly shrink in front of him until they disappeared. However due to a severe cock-up in the Lab the hallucinations don't just shrink and leave, they try to kill the patient. If they succeed then the Patient becomes mentally broken and will be more insane than ever, but if the Patient succeeds then he begins the long path to rehabilitation.

Instead of a Health and Mana bar he has a Mental Health and Lucidity bar, Mental Health bar being a replacement for the Health bar and the Lucidity bar obviously being the mana bar, but the Lucidity bar runs out when you've manifested a few items and recharges over time. I will explain the manifesting bit in the following paragraph.

Seeing as it is the Patients fantasy he can, at some special areas, manifest weapons and items and even health upgrades and other such things. These Special areas are at the beginning, middle, and end of the realm. Basically you have 20 main fears and hallucinations to destroy, each with his own special power based on the fear or hallucination.

Along the way you are given several different types of weapons, ranging from melee swords and pikes and planks with nails in them to fully functioning grenade launchers and sub-machine guns, even weapons that haven't been invented before, such as a gun that sprays Medicine over the enemies, making them disappear, and a gun that fires syringes full of a knockout toxin. However when these weapons run out of ammo they simply vaporise, leaving the Patient to find new ones. As the game progresses the Patient becomes more lucid, being able to make better and more stable weapons in the special areas I mentioned earlier.

The leveld esign would be based upon the Patients different types of insanity, the Paranoia would obviously be a dark place full of eyes that constantly watch you, adding a stealth section or simply blowing the fuckers up before they see you, and the plain snooker-loopiness to an extremely bright and multi-coloured world full of strange avantguarde creatures intent on killing you in many imaginative ways. Each realm would be vastly different but in everyone is a sense of dark and twisted malevolence.

At the end of the game the patient has to destroy the insane side of himself, who looks like the patient but he wears a straightjacket, babbles incoherently, giggles insatiably and can manifest enemies and super weapons for himself at anytime during the fight. You have to destroy him by getting him down to a set amount of health, then running through a twisting labyrinth of corridors desperately trying to find the patients' ultimate fear.

The insane self is pursuing at your heels and is coated in a dark bullet and sword proof goo, if you go in the right direction then eventually you find the ultimate fear: A clown mask, you quickly put it on and then turn to face the Insane self, who screams and starts to flee, the goo dissolving. You have to reach him before he gets out of the labyrinth and brutally kill him with whatever weapon you find along the way.

That's just a rough idea but I think you guys get the picture ^^

I can't help but whore my own post [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.67778]. On topic though this generation has been pretty stagnant.

A call of Cthulu FPS, where you can fight and kill, but every time you face a nasty beast that should not be you loose a little of your sanity. Sanity (Yeah San Checks!) level would have in game effects, like inducing hallucinations (illusory monsters) and making dialogue tones change. Where one character may be trying to be helpful, in your paranoia it sounds like they are setting you up. This makes you be very careful about choosing where you have to play with stealth and where you need to actually fight.

Those mechanics with a Lovecraftian plot would be a lot of fun in my book.

In my perfect world, where doughnuts rained from the skies, and the worlds oceans were actually made entirely of Strongbow, the would be an FPS, where after evil aliens invade earth, and no, there will not be any sewer levels or any goddamn wandering round the space ship looking for damn keys, anyway, you would be an everday joe, well you could be a spy or something like that, it would let you make your own background, you were put in charge of a small team of 4 convicts where you fought in pitched battles like on the first level of killzone, and also, the buildings would be destructable and you could hide in all areas

I think there was a survival horror game that did that... can't remember the name. I think it was in the last console gen...

Still an amazing an idea, just sayin'.

How about an FPS set in the days of sail? Single-shot pistols and cutlass/foil fights FTW! For bonus points, use the Wii Motion-plus thingy. (Or maybe Wii Fit when walking the plank?)

Every time this is asked I always think I'd love to see a partisan/guerilla warfare based FPS. Where you can actually die from one bullet and have to use stealth, plan your movements, set up booby traps, blow up communication lines/train tracks, ambush convoys etc... In most FPS games you're supposedly outnumbered and outgunned by the enemy but you can still manage to walk about, guns blazing and manage to save the day.

Me being a WWII enthusiast I always think there could also be some more innovations in that genre, especially in terms of historical accuracy and realism.

Another idea; instead of having "health", let the controlling stat be "courage". You don't take damage from being shot... like in real wars, the vast majority of shots miss but the close misses damage your courage until you can't move to leave cover or you automatically hug the dirt. Courage would regrow (like regen. health/shield) or you could give/get a courage boost like the "Gears" mechanic.

If you absolutely must have a "kill" mechanism, make it that you're court-martialled if you funk out too many times in a level.

Umm... they made one, for the original X-box and PC, with almost the exact features you mentioned...it was pretty good, though REALLY FRACKIN HARD.
