As a member of Twitter, I follow a number of people. One of them is one of the well known guitar gods, Steve Vai, and he recently posted his list [http://www.aolradioblog.com/2009/08/21/steve-vai-unveils-his-10-favorite-instrumentals/] over his 10 favourite instrumental songs. (I preferred "Black Star", "Lenny", and "Is There Love In Space" on that list)

The question here is, how do you feel about instrumental music, with no lyrics or song? Do you like it more or less, does it have more or less emotion in your opinion? And do you have any favourite songs or artists (any genre, pop, country, classical, rock, metal)? I'll have to think here, I'm a huge guitar fan, so obviously there's a lot:

Favourite artists: John 5, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani (aka Satch)

Favourite songs: 27 Needles (John 5) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3-LFVsC-Es], Dialogue With The Stars (In Flames) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE8j7MNtkAc], Tender Surrender (Steve Vai) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw74sDWPH7U&feature=fvst], If I Could Fly (Satch) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMcjXo8ZuqE&feature=related]

I feel that instrumental music has a little higher demands on artists, cause it takes a lot of work to take away the emotions of a great set of lyrics, and express it in an instrumental way. Especially with today's music. But there are some artists that make such great instrumental work that it can bring you to tears. Take Satch, for example. He doesn't need a stunning voice, his guitar is his singing, and what a great singer it is.

(It's not required to do a list if you don't want to, I was just giving an example)

EDIT: Gave some links now, so you can listen to the songs.

Most of the time with music, it's the music I remember, NOT the lyrics. For example, some of my favourite songs are Meat Loaf's, the massive 8 minute ones with 3/4 epic instrumentals. Gotta be strong music though. Y'know... There's pop, there's heavy enough rock stuff, and then there's all that wierd stuff that I avoid. (The stuff with static and screaming people._

One of the better instrumental/post-rock bands are Explosions in the Sky. I recommend "Breath After Coma" or "Your Hand in Mine".

Harsh vocals are just as beautiful as clean vocals.
Not IMO, I'm afraid. I'd like to think of myself as not one to judge, but there's a harsh vocal, then there's baulling.

We're different people then. I love "harsh" vocals. But everyone has different taste, or else we would only have one genre of music, the "All" genre.

Since I listen to mainly techno (for lack of a better term) I prefer music without lyrics. In that genre, lyrics usually ruin the song as they are often just one phrase repeated over and over. However, if the phrase sounds good, or is interetsing, it can really add to a song if used sparingly. Unlike crappy Daft Punk.

Why not, they are only much darker, perhaps brutal, and more violent, and fits perfectly with Death/Black Metal, harsh vocals can be bad just like clean vocals, and can be good just like clean vocals, both take same amount of skill. There are some talented harsh vocalists like Jens Kidman of Meshuggah, or Mikeal Akerfeldt from Opeth, who can also sing with clean vocals, or Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom, although the metal community is less appreciative of that.

I dont really see why clean vocals are put over harsh vocals, they are both equal, you dont have to like it, but atleast admit that they are just as good as clean vocals.
I'm quite ignorant about it, I suppose. You seem to be speaking from a fair amount of knowledge, so if there's anything you'd care to reccomend to change my mind, I wouldn't object.

Unless I've been ninja'd whilst typing, no one has mentioned CLASSICAL music yet! :0

Lots just instrumental there, and almost all beautiful to boot!
Prelude to Bach's Cello suite 1:

and omg, Air on the G string!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOVwokQnV4M

Do these not touch you?

P.S. these are a bit sombre, but there's very upbeat and fastpased classical music too!

Well really at first i didnt like them either, but i enjoyed the instrumental bits of metal a great deal, and gradually i started liking the Harsh vocals.

Well ill reccomend a song from Death.

To me the vocals there are just as emotional as clean vocals, but they are dark, like a dark beauty.
I think Chuck Schuldiner has one of the most accessible harsh vocals.

Jens Kidman from Meshuggah has very powerful and passionate sounding vocals whilst fitting with the robotic music.

Oh and these guys are not screaming satanists.

EDIT: I also find Harsh vocals very empowering.
I quite like that first link, favourited. I'll look into their stuff later.
Not so fond of the second one, but, I can respect it.
Thanks, I'll be a bit more acceptant in future.

Eh. If you're going to preach beauty of "harsh" vocals, pick some good vocalists.

In one page, we managed to mention both Explosions In The Sky and MASONNA. Escapists, I'm so proud of you.

My first recommendation, however, would've been Mono.

gotta be the song from requiem for a dream, can't remember the name of it now... Lux eterna! that's the one.
also moonlight sonata, clare la lune and Bach's overture

although i do prefer lyrics i gotta say, although i like them best when they're barely audible or you can't understand what they're saying; like michael stipe or my bloody valentine.

Instrumental songs are better for conveying pure emotion, while songs with lyrics can better instill both ideas and emotions. Some songs are better with lyrics, others could do very well without them.

I love Instrumental Music, so soundtracks in most movies are great, and does not matter if they are Classical or not, they all are great.

Still my favorite is Symphony #9 by Beethoven. Moonlight Sonata is great as well. I listen to that when studying most of the time.
