As a member of Twitter, I follow a number of people. One of them is one of the well known guitar gods, Steve Vai, and he recently posted his list [http://www.aolradioblog.com/2009/08/21/steve-vai-unveils-his-10-favorite-instrumentals/] over his 10 favourite instrumental songs. (I preferred "Black Star", "Lenny", and "Is There Love In Space" on that list)

The question here is, how do you feel about instrumental music, with no lyrics or song? Do you like it more or less, does it have more or less emotion in your opinion? And do you have any favourite songs or artists (any genre, pop, country, classical, rock, metal)? I'll have to think here, I'm a huge guitar fan, so obviously there's a lot:

Favourite artists: John 5, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani (aka Satch)

Favourite songs: 27 Needles (John 5), Dialogue With The Stars (In Flames), Tender Surrender (Steve Vai), If I Could Fly (Satch)

I feel that instrumental music has a little higher demands on artists, cause it takes a lot of work to take away the emotions of a great set of lyrics, and express it in an instrumental way. Especially with today's music. But there are some artists that make such great instrumental work that it can bring you to tears. Take Satch, for example. He doesn't need a stunning voice, his guitar is his singing, and what a great singer it is.

(It's not required to do a list if you don't want to, I was just giving an example)
No Yngwie Malmsteen? What gives?

Just not a big fan of Yngwie. Don't get me wrong, he's a genius, and I'm proud to be from the same country as him, he's just not my favourite. I still enjoy listening to him sometimes.

Check out Beastie Boys - The Mix-up. Revisiting some of the best tracks from Ill Communication it's an entirely instrumental album.

Unless I've been ninja'd whilst typing, no one has mentioned CLASSICAL music yet! :0

Lots just instrumental there, and almost all beautiful to boot!
Prelude to Bach's Cello suite 1:

and omg, Air on the G string!

Do these not touch you?

P.S. these are a bit sombre, but there's very upbeat and fastpased classical music too!
Classical music was so obvious i forgot. :)
Heh, no problem. Wasn't there a saying that goes "You don't miss a good thing until it's gone"?
Here's a happy song without lyrics: "Spring" by Vivaldi.

OT: I like In Flames - Dialogue with the Stars too ;-)

On account of r@@@, I am all for instrumental music. IMO it's better than a bunch of the other stuff I've listened to.

One of my lecturers is in a Jazz trio and whenever he tells someone he is in a band they go "What kind of band" "Modern Jazz trio, piano drums and bass" "Ohh no vocals.. That's weird.." "...No its not"

Anyways

My favorite band, Clutch, has an "alter-ego", all-instrumental band called The Bakerton Group - the same 4 guys, just no singing. It's good stuff - kind of groovy stoner rock type stuff. And Clutch has a purely instrumental song here and there, as well - "Crackerjack", "WYSIWYG", "Tim Sult vs. the Grays".

...instrumental music, with no lyrics or song?
A piece of music, without without lyrics, is still a song.

But anyway, I love instrumental music, but mostly soundtracks. This is because as I go through something (for example, Final Fantasy VII), the music is given context and meaning. If a random person hears Aerith's Theme, they may think it's a beautiful piece of music. If a Final Fantasy VII player hears the song, they just might break down and cry. Why? Because to them, that song is more than a piece of music, it is a musical representation of something very close to them.

That said, my favorites are To Zanarkand (Final Fantasy X), One Final Effort (Halo 3), Yearnings of the Wind (Chrono Trigger), The Decisive Battle (Final Fantasy VI), The Imperial March (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back), and Nagisa's Theme (Clannad).

I love Lenny, it's one of my favorite pieces ever.

And I'd say I'm down with instrumental music, considering it's about 80% of what I make.

I have no problems with lyrical music. A voice is, after all, just another instrument that can either lift up, or completely ruin, a song. That being said, I love instrumental tracks, mostly owing to the fact that real lyrics weren't present in video games until the N64/Playstation era. Well, there was the CD attachment to the TurboGrafix16, but that was before my time, and the Opera Maria and Draco from Final Fantasy VI was MIDI, so I don't think that counts.

I like Fire on High by ELO, and most of Alan Parson's Project's instrumental pieces (Gold Bug, Lucifer, Total Eclipse, Genesis Chapter 1 Verse 32...)

I really like Liquid Tension Experiment, an instrumental side project for several members of Dream Theater. I don't think they are still releasing ablums, but LTE1 was amazing:

Of course! Anything by John Willliams is gold. Jurassic Park, Memoirs of a Geisha, etc.

Allow me to show you the meaning of ass kicking, in an instrumental way:
