The on site help a hardware manufacturer can give a developer isn't necessarily equal man hour for man hour. If the game developer uses NDA'd libraries from a competitor and has a chaotic development process (so that's all of them) you're going to be stuck with a baby sitter ... whereas the competitor can just send someone who can sit himself down as a normal in house developer with normal repository access.

A lot of the people that get angry at Nvidia don't seem to understand that Nvidia are not "bribing" developers they are just offering some tangible benefits that are attractive for them, Nvidias gameworks are to AAA developers what the Unity engine and assets are to indies.
No they aren't bribing with money, they just offer incredibly expensive services for free which accidentally also puts them ahead of the competition wherever they do it... I hope I don't have to explain word for word what the goal of their "selfless" endeavour is.

From my understanding its a common interface API which even MS has taken part of (and put into DX12), and nVidia was invited to participate in developing along with the OpenGL crowd, it isn't a case of AMD coding it all and everyone else has to toe the line (like DX).
Yes that is the PR narrative by AMD, the factual information however is that Mantle to this day has only been made available to specific partners and no one else. And they invited Nvidia as a PR move, just as Nvidia has invited them to use Physx/Cuda both parties knowing this is absolute proprietary code that would put the accepting party at their mercy, shit would run only as well as the other party wanted.

Obviously MS agreed to Mantle because they run a console together, that is in their best interest, could possibly put them ahead of Sony if they get a better API.

More competition in the market place? I'm for it. Either Apple will fail hilariously or they'll create a product that could lead to innovation and even price reduction. Though considering the cost of Apple machines I'm not going to put money on the price reduction side of things.

I actually hope AMD's Mantle API gets some serious purchase into the market and manages to convince nVidia to join up (cold day in hell :/) as this would wake Microsoft up PC gaming wise (snowflakes in hell ?), instead of trying to turn PC gamers PC's into companion devices for the XBox1 (seriously MS, PC gamers are not that interested in more ways to interact with their Xbox1, even those who own a Xbox1).
Microsoft seem to have already answered to mantle with the upcoming Direct X 12, devs who have been using it have reported significant performance improvements over DX11.

Did I say it was "selfless"? Its just good business practice to offer services to your customers, developers are just as much a customer as the person playing it home because parts of the whole "gameworks" program are not "free" and the GPU customer is also paying for it and its why most Nvidia card buyers accept the higher prices as they know they have far better software support.

It's not like mac users will notice. These are the people who are sold retina displays at an over inflated price are the same people who buy Sharp displays with yellow pixels. These are the people who think they can see individual pixels in the very letters of this text.

Going the ARM route made sense for Tablets and Phones because it saves power. Intel is far better for performance, but it eats power as if it's a diabetic on a sugar crash. Apple tries to hype there stuff as vastly superior no matter what, but people who bother to know what they're talking about know they're usually just tossing as much technobable at their audience because all their audience wants to know is that they're the best in spite of any real facts.
