Too long and excessive. Most of your paragraphs could have been summed up in 5 sentences, maybe even less. The thing that got my attention that you're blaming the game for you not playing it properly. That, and the fact that you're nitpicking at the situations in the game. Not every game needs to be totally realistic now doesn't it? That, and the weapons in the games (only played 1 and 3, played part of 2) are found in some sort of storage facilities.

Not a very good review. You make statements that aren't backed up. The examples you cited had solutions built-in to the game and you just weren't paying attention. If you've been playing since MGS1, you'd have known that when in doubt, you only have to call someone. The clues may be vague (like the famous "back of the CD case" clue when you're going to get Meryl's frequency), but figuring them out is part of why MGS was so damn satisfying.

steamednotfried, congratulations in presenting yourself as an utter retard.

Why do I feel justified in calling you mentally handicapped? Because your 'review' misses some very basic points.

Firstly, you make reference to the series AS A WHOLE, and much of it seems directed at he original, or MGS2.

Consider how old the series is. Metal Gear Solid was, upon released, a ground-breaking game. In terms of sound, graphics, gameplay and storyline, it was on the leading edge in all respects. Time has not been kind (a fact that MGS4 actually proves in a very amusing way), but you CANNOT hold a game that old up to today's standards and expect perfection. On occasion, a game CAN compete on its own merits, but MGS is not one of them; three sequels have shown that Stealth Games can be done far better.

Instead, then, we must say "I'm going to make allowances, rather than pretend this game was released a week ago". Once you do this, much of the flaws seem to fade.

In fact, many of the flaws can be dismissed by the words 'game mechanic'. Why does touching a Goomba with anything but your feet kill you in Mario games? It's a game mechanic. Why doesn't Mario drown? Game mechanic. Why doesn't Mario take damage from falling a great height? Game mechanic.

Why does Snake's radar become jammed when spotted? Game mechanic - it Jams to deny you this very useful tool, thus PUNISHING the player for being spotted.

Why can't Snake "slip" into vents and such? Partly game mechanic, partly LIMITATIONS of the game mechanic; no game allows you to move as freely and realistically as a Real World human. Many games involve performing movements that are not physically possible with the human frame. This is simply a part of the artistic medium of videogames, and thus not a particularly valid point of complaint.

Your next source of anger, the Camera, is also invalid. In the real world, the only way to see round a corner is to put my head around it, which if I were in Snake's position would get me spotted. Instead, Snake can somehow 'see' people by leaning near the edge of a wall, via this magical camera that gives you an impossible field of vision.

You complained about being ambushed by guards you can't see... that's all part of Stealth games! The idea is you have to be careful, methodically search out every angle, not just take a quick peek and rush in! For someone who bitches about lack of realism, it seems odd that you DEMAND access to an extremely un-realistic method of locating enemies.

Besides which, we have Radar. Radar is present throughout most of MGS1 and MGS2 (it was removed for 3 and 4, a fact I approve of). I evaded foes more by watching radar blips than using the screen itself, as the radar showed the enemy Field of Vision as well as position.

Overall, you strike me as someone who is just trying to make themselves sound clever and feel important. Sadly, you do this by taking on a very popular series, and bitching about THE strongest title in it (the original), and a very high quality sequel.

Oh, and for the record, I worked out that you had to use Grenades versus The Pain all on my own. Shotguns work too.

MGS 3 has a radar. It's just a different kind of radar because MGS 3 played in the 60's and MGS 4 has some kind of radar.

MGS 1 and 2 uses the Soliton Radar, developed by Mei Ling. IIRC there's an explanation in MGS1 why it gets jammed when enemies are alerted. In MGS 3, since it was set in the 60's, there is no way to create a sophisticated piece of tech like that, the radar is more conventional (acts like a proper radar) and runs on batteries.

I don't own, nor have I ever played, MGS4. I have played and beaten the first three and I am mainly basing my views on the first. Sorry If I didn't make that clear.
Well than what are you trying to talk about using my post as a quote.
You somehow seem to be talking about the last three MSG's when we are talking MSG4.
Talking about MSG4 and making assumptions is like me saying all Jews are evil because Israel is bombing schools now.
Undoubtedly you have quite an extensive knowledge of MSG but if you haven't played MSG4 you really shouldn't try and criticize the ones that actually did.

(to all people who want to call me out on my statement of Israel is evil take this in mind, they bombed 2 UN schools harbouring refugees and killed 140 people under the HUGE obnoxious lie that the schools were thought to be filled with militia. Wonder how the world would react if Palestinians started bombing Israel's schools)

I assumed, what with Fatman and all, he was talking about the series as a whole, so I thought I'd contribute what I know.

Yeah, run less. Seriously, the faster you move in MGS, the easier it is for you to be detected.
This only affects the amount of sound you make right? I think i had that technique down when i played, i don't think that the problems encountered in the review could be solved by running less.

A question just popped into my head. Why were people throwing grenades at the Pain? Just wait for the bees to fly off by themselves and shoot the bugger. The only time I've used grenades in any situation (apart from chaff, obviously) is against the tank in MGS1.

I think the real problem might just be you. It sure seems like you don't have the patience for the game, though you obviously have enough patience to write an excessively long and pointless rant about it.

Never mind any of the responses, attacks and defenses etc. of this review, the plain fact is that this series has had some of the most interesting and unique boss fights in a game. OK, interesting could be my opinion, but definitely different.

Your review needed more information to back up your points and calling the review intelligent leads it to be ridiculed at the slightly imperfection.

Just a random MGS point here. The MGS soundtrack sounds surprisingly like the soundtrack to Speed. http://youtube.com/watch?v=JVJD-Thkjv4

Here's a few questions about your 'intelligent' MGS review.

1. Which Boss is it when I have to throw grenades at someone, because gunfire is useless?

2. Since when is the fight with fatman (the mad bomber) about Luck? You have a sensor to tell where the bomb is on the radar.

3. Do you need a game to make sense for you perfectly? Does it matter if realism isn't great? Mortal Kombat has a guy with Ice powers. Fallout 3 has a window which asks whether you want to change aspects of your childhood as you leave the vault.

4. Why do you need a walk through for this game? I managed perfectly fine without (Except MGS1 wasn't perfect, but I never used a walk through.

5. I happened to stumble into rations constantly by chance. Plus you can shake down guards for them, Dead or Alive.

6. Do you actually like stealth games or are you a fast paced counterstrike player who prefers first person shooters.
I believe that he means The Pain, because you have to throw grenades at him to get rid of his hornet shield. Also, I agree with you on all these points. First, games were never realistic, even games based off real events aren't realistic. Is it realistic to have all your grenade wounds cured in seconds, just by hiding by a car? Also, the Metal Gear series as a whole was a pretty linear, so I never needed a walkthrough for the main story, unless I was looking for secrets. You find rations and ammo very commonly, so I never needed to find bullets all the time. And I agree with you on the last point, as Metal Gear doesn't really cater to fast paced gamers, as you have to wait, and be patient sneaking around and watching cutscenes.
Wow thank you for seeing it my way.
The Pain. Oh yeah. If he was a bit more descriptive in his review by saying lets say "He had a shield which only grenades could get rid of" then I would have known.
Not an 'Intelligent review' more like an 'Annoying Rant'.

his review is all about his point of view, how he felt the series held up for him. it's like the old saying:"One man's trash is another man's treasure", One man's "Intelligent Review" is another man's "Annoying Rant" . it all depends on which side of that coin you sit on. for me , it's Annoying rant.
