If nobody has said this earlier, Windows does this already including steam. Did anyone even look at the terms for steam(the "Collection and Use of Information" in general that is)?

Collection and Use of Information
By using Valve's online sites and products, users agree that Valve may collect aggregate information, individual information, and personally identifiable information, as defined below. Valve may share aggregate information and individual information with other parties. Valve shall not share personally identifiable information with other parties, except as described in the policy below.

"Aggregate information" is information that describes the habits, usage patterns, and demographics of users as a group but does not describe or reveal the identity of any particular user.

"Individual information" is information about a user that is presented in a form distinguishable from information relating to other users but not in a form that personally identifies any user or enables the recipient to communicate directly with any user unless agreed to by the user in advance of such communication. This information may be used to improve Valve's products and online sites, for internal marketing studies, or simply to collect demographic information about Valve's users.

Valve may use customer contact information provided by users to send information
about Valve, including news about product updates, contests, events, and other promotional materials, but only if the users agree to receive such communications. Except in the cases described below, Valve will not share personally identifiable information with any third party unless the user agrees to such disclosure in advance. "Personally identifiable information" consists of a user's name, email address, physical address, or other data about the user that enables the recipient to personally identify the user. While Valve collects personally identifiable information on a voluntary basis, for certain products and online sites, Valve's collection of personally identifiable information may be a requirement for access to the product or site. Personally identifiable information will be processed and stored by Valve in databases situated in the United States. Valve may allow third parties performing services under contract with Valve to access stored information but such access shall only be to the extent necessary to provide those services. In those instances, the third party will be bound by the terms of this privacy policy. In some situations, personally identifiable information you input in connection with Steam may be made available to other users of Steam. For example, during registration of Steam, Valve collects a user's email address and nickname, and at the user's option, first and last name. Some of this information is searchable and available to other users within Steam. Valve has no obligation to keep the privacy of personally identifiable information that a user makes available to other users via Steam or other Valve software, such as in multiplayer or other public functions.

Personally identifiable information protected under this privacy policy and collected from users may be done in conjunction with associates under agreement with Valve. If an associate of Valve is collecting such personally identifiable information within one of our products or online sites, Valve will make users aware of this at the time the information is gathered. For example, product registration data for Half-Life is collected by Sierra Entertainment. If a user does not want to provide this information, the user may choose to opt out of providing this information. Additionally, if providing the information is a requirement of usage, the user may decline to use that particular service or product. When possible, Valve will make a reasonable effort to direct users to the privacy polices of these associates. Valve's privacy policy does not extend to associates of Valve.

Furthermore, external websites and companies with links to and from Valve's online sites and products may collect personal information about users. Valve's privacy policy does not extend to these external websites and companies. Please refer directly to these companies and websites regarding their privacy policies.

Valve may release personally identifiable information to comply with court orders or laws that require us to disclose such information
I'm sure there's more to point out in the agreement.

They CAN collect information and share it with 3rd party. It doesn't mean it's an evil company, and so with origin.

Or plans to assassinate the EA leadership, the existence of which is becoming increasingly likely with every step EA takes.

(Disclaimer: 'tis a joke.)

Or as some people have, if you have downloaded music at all they can sell that information to SonyBMG (or whoever) and use that as a legal means of obtaining evidence against you that you pirated their stuff.

Personally, I think I can understand what EA's reasons for doing this is, but that doesn't deny the fact that, overall, this was a really poor choice on their part.

I am pretty sure the reason for Origin to always be seekritly delivering data to EA would be, first and foremost, locating hackers with an illegal copy of their games or of Origin itself, or someone that found a bug in the system and is exploiting it to get free games or something like that. Big game companies, for some reason, still have an avid paranoia about piracy, enough that they would believe this would be a good idea (it isn't).

The other obvious reason, of course, is to gather data on demographics. The games and applications installed, the hours spent on computers, the OS and how updated the normal aesthetics are, etc. Again, good idea to try and use it to gather some data, but not a good idea to have it do that 'all the time', as well as collect 'all of your information.' That's just prying at that rate.

tbh, I don't see why Origin just can't have an opt-in/out feature.

Which would bring us back to the debate that owning illegally downloaded music is not a crime*, but downloading is. EA would need to get information from one's internet provider to be able to do that.

* - i.e. if you buy an illegal CD not knowing it was illegal, you can't be sued under most legal systems. I don't know how it works in the US, but at least in Europe, it is that way.

I'm pretty sure it said:

"2. Consent to Collection and Use of Data.

You agree that EA may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer (including the Internet Protocol Address), operating system, Application usage (including but not limited to successful installation and/or removal), software, software usage and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online services. EA may also use this information combined with personal information for marketing purposes and to improve our products and services. We may also share that data with our third party service providers in a form that does not personally identify you. IF YOU DO NOT WANT EA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, TRANSMIT OR DISPLAY THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APPLICATION. This and all other data provided to EA and/or collected by EA in connection with your installation and use of this Application is collected, used, stored and transmitted in accordance with EA's Privacy Policy located at www.ea.com. To the extent that anything in this section conflicts with the terms of EA's Privacy Policy, the terms of the Privacy Policy shall control."

Don't get me wrong, but it's basically what every company does to a certain degree. We're constantly under surveillance.

EA - I'm just dissapointed... I have Origin because it was EA download manager before and I registered there my ME2 game and ME DLCs, but this is just sad... Never gonna use it for buying other games. I was interested in Battlefield 3... well, I'm not anymore.

EA have already earned my disdain by botching up WAR, 2142, BFBC2 and Taking BF3 off steam but this is the clincher. I will not install origin and I will not purchase BF3 unless it comes out on steam without the need to install origin.

I tried beta testing origin and BF3, but never could get in to the game. Now this is out in the open I've un-installed Origin and will soon take care of the beta that never was. Ahh well it's not like once you've played one shooter you get a different experience.

1. i hate origini, steam and other persistent online services that add nothing good.
2. if you dont want anyone to see what you are doing, maybe you shouldnt be doing it in the first place?
3. you agree to it doing it. if you dont want to - dont install origin. if nobody installs it they realize their mistake. this is THE ONLY WAY to do it.

They CAN collect information and share it with 3rd party. It doesn't mean it's an evil company, and so with origin.
Oh, come on, your trying to say that EA is not an evil company? are you out of your mind?

I'll only run Origin when I need to (to play BF3) so hopefully this will provide some form of damage control.
yeah, it will only scan your pc and tell everything in the first 10 minuets of playing every time you start the game. unless you are going to play it once a year or so, its no damage control at all.
