If a certain person is seen a lot around a community, of course they're going to get popular, because they're familiar. Everyone knows them.
This also happens in real life, the more you put yourself out there, the more people realize you exist. (Freelancing careers are almost dependent on this.)

It's when those people get big headed that it becomes a bad thing.

What is respect? It isn't the same as admiration because we can respect someone we dislike or even disagree with. It isn't the same as fame because we can respect someone or something that is not well known or even hidden.

Perhaps something that is respected must have an inherant value in order to garner that respect? It is conceivable, however, that someone would respect something that did not have inherant value through delusion or false perception of value. This would render the respect false but then would that neccesarily matter? Is the perception all that matters and that the eidos of perception, the truth of the belief, irrelevant?

All things, even delusions, have a root cause otherwise they would not be. In the case of a delusional value, a value which is perceived or deliberately presented as one thing when it is another, then closer inspection and rational interogation would expose that value to be false. So for example if someone were to tell you "Berty is very funny", which would then be a supposition, then presented doctored evidence where someone else's joke had my name on it then that would be a delusional value towards garnering respect through wit. Time would tell, however, that Berty is not funny and thus the respect would disapear as its foundation is disproved.

Perhaps this is what people mean when they say "I have lost respect for ..." as the underlying premise the value of respect was founded on has been disproved.

I know this all too well. You will find it in every nook and cranny of the internet. Myself, I find it a lot in TF2 servers where there is always this one guy who never shuts the hell up and when I ask nicely if he can please keep it down, I get a swift ban or told by the entire server that he's a regular and i'm supposed to care about his yelling and unfunny remarks. I won't sit there and rage, i'll just leave. But it can get quite annoying

A lot of it in WoW as well. There are always 2 or 3 players per server (per faction) that have been around since the server was made, in the best guilds, have the best gear, and have the most skill and we're supposed to worship the very ground they walk on. A majority of them aren't even humble about it, they think they deserve the praise for being good at a video game and nobody should go against what they say. Idiots

In either case, I can not agree with that E-Peen in any fashion is connected with respect. After playing WoW for 5 years, I've never heard E-peen been used in any form but an ironic, derogatory one. Respect at least carries some positive connotations, but I've never experienced these from the term "E-Peen". The term stands for Electronic Penis, and, from what I understand to be correct, is used to signalize when a person is in a pissing-contest with another, that they are "measuring their penises", i.e comparing E-Peen. The one with "bigger" E-peen might have better stats, or score, but it doesn't make him more respectable, as engaging in childish behavior and comparing E-Peen have always been universally derided.
Now, said person (the one with the big E-Peen) might still be a highly respectable person, skilled, friendly, etc. But when he "compares E-peen", he is engaging in a lowly act of bragging.

My point excatly. They might've made good videos (don't know, haven't watched) but the one I was talking about was absolutely unfunny but if they make even one video people don't like, their fans are already making hangman's nooses and gathering torches.

And like it has been said, many people with big and plentiful internet penises aren't all douches. Their followers (they act like a cult...) are the ones that usually get on my nerves. I don't know if they get this feeling of approval from god himself when they furioysly defend their hero no matter what but it can get really frustrating.

Yeah... i'm not a fan of total biscuit to be honest :/ and i have found in the past if i make comments that disagree with him or perhaps slightly belittle what he has said. The fan boy army decends on me >_> so i refrain from such things now not worth the hastle.

The hilarious part is he absolutely despises those people, if he had a motto it would probably his ye olden "all fanboys must die".

Fame really is a horrible attribute we have yet to grow past as a society, makes people go blind to any logic or reason, and it is in no way reserved for the interwebs.
