.99$ just goes to show people pirate no matter the price. "i can't afford it" not even close to an excuse for this game.
How about the fact that most people don't like dealing with the AppStore and most people don't like the fact that apple is pretty bitchy about what you can do with YOUR cellphone and what you can't.

Maybe in this case, it's not just about the dev, but about Apple's bad business practices.
You already bought the several hundred dollar phone. They won. You aren't "hurting" them in the slightest, you're just hurting the dev.

Hey just trying to look at this from a slightly different perspective, honestly, I don't really care.

I would love to think piracy was responsible for this, but a basic high school statistics class will teach you that correlation does not imply causation, there is probably a lurking variable that caused the popularity of the app to rise, resulting in an increase of both purchases AND piracy, I don't know what it could be, it could be as simple as a very popular youtube video maker saying he likes it, who knows.

Actually, Apple gets a cut of sales, if he pirates the game and then donates a dollar to the developer, he's helping them more for the same amount of money than if he bought the game.

That implies he actually made the donation though...

I'd hate to point out the bloody obvious, but those pirated figures still stupidly outweigh his actual sales; you can't really argue ethics when most pirates are clearly not buying the product after trying it.
Not exactly a point in the developer's favor, even if he's choosing to paint it in a positive manner.

Then again, if he's happy with the outcome, then good for him. It's his business.

I know they get a cut of the sales, so they are happy if he buys the game. They're happier if he buys the phone though, because it's more money for them.

So you can't prove that every case of piracy is a lost sale, but you can apparently prove that increased sales are because of piracy?

I don't see how that's relevant, he's saying he wants to circumvent Apple's restrictive app store, and that it's not about not being able to afford it, you said that hurts the developer, I said there is a way to do it without hurting the developer.

Buying the phone really has nothing to do with any of those points

Demos, rent a game, Borrow a game from a friend you have options more then just throwing your money out there to see if the game works or is good...hell there is one thing you could do but that would be condoning piracy in the end...
Please tell me where I can rent or get demos for PC games as this option does not exist anyomre for us. Also can't borrow from a friends as PC games now are a nightmare to activate on another PC.

Still want to know where these piracy figures are coming from. Anyone?

His original point (unless I misread it) was that it's like you're sticking it to apple by not paying them. Even though they already made lots of money through the sale of the phone, which was my point. I think you and I are agreeing with each other.

Correlation is not causation. And if the piracy did cause an increase in sales, the increase in sales would lag behind the piracy spike. Instead, it is simultaneus
Pirates have friends, ya know...
They won't have many friends if they recommend games before playing them properly. If they did give it a decent playthough before recommending it, the increase in sales would lag behind the piracy spike.

Perhaps it's the ones who bought it who recomended it to their friends, a portion of which bought it while the other just downloaded, that would explain why the increases are simultaneous. I notice that the number of pirates drops somewhat while the increase in sales remains, now if piracy really was bad the numbers of pirates would remain constant while the numbers of sales would go down to zero.
That said I too would like to know how he got these numbers, see if it's scientificaly correct enough.
