If you are bright enough to read, write and not dribble on yourself then thats all you need really. Anything else is just to stroke the ego

I think you don't have to take the test, but what harm can it do?

just as a side note, I went to see an education psychologist yesterday. Weird coincidence eh?

I didn't think I would do too well, and I got 138, which apparently puts me in the to 0.5% of kids my age. The test measures your memory, processing skills, and verbal and non verbal cogitation (something like that). It's not like 'you're good at maths, but not english', but more a study of how different parts of your brain relate, and how well.

It's not all bad, you might get something good from it too...

As someone who scored above 140 on the Woodcock-Johnson III test (I swear on my reputation, that's what it's called), I'd like to state that I personally believe they're a load of bunk.

I got a high score because of my intuition, not because of my intelligence. Plus, they're just so outdated.

On a somewhat off-topic note, I envy people who're awesome at math. I'd much rather be a linear thinker than an abstract one. My thought process is like scattershot, and rarely solves anything.

It ain't that great...

I get stuck down in the little details, and I have an total inability to focus on the bigger picture. Sure I can demolish algebra, but I have the long term memory of a goldfish =P

Well the answer to this isn't exactly fact. But at the end of the day, it's about you. And on that basis, it only matters what you think. If you feel you know them already, just tell him/her that.

Thanks for the reality check. It put a bit of spring in my step to remember I'm still good for something, even if my chronic impulsiveness negates it almost entirely.

IQ tests are relatively useless. They were originally used to test for retardation (and i mean that in the clinical slow development way not the internet slang way). Using them on relatively normal people results in relatively normal results any kind of particularly high result is not really a good indicator of high intelligence. However if your parents want to through a ridiculous amount of money at this person, and waste a considerable amount of your time then go for it, if its a good result then you can feel good otherwise it is irrelevant anyway. Also be sure to ask which test it is, and which age group it is geared towards.

Recently my parents decided I needed to see a psychologist. Fine. I don?t mind talking to a professional about school, grades, and the like, but he suggested I get an IQ test to ?let you know your strengths and weaknesses.? I am quite certain that I know my strengths and weaknesses myself, and I see absolutely no reason why I should get arbitrary numbers telling me what I?m good at.

Am I justified, or is this completely irrational?
It's completely irrational, a person with a high IQ has a higher chance of suffering from depression or other mental illnesses. What's the big deal?

If it's bothering you that much, read "What Color is your Parachute." IQ tests attempt to measure intellectual age, but only measure a certain kind of intelligence... the ability to complete puzzles. There are other kinds of intelligence, which will definitely be more useful to understand and develop. That's what the "What Color is your Parachute" book is about.

IMO, adults who try to get kids to take IQ test are merely trying to divert attention from the fact that they are shitty mentors and blame the failings of said adult on the kid. They'll also make you take a number of other tests to prove that the relevant adults aren't dipshits. They might make you take an autism test or an ADD test. Don't be fooled. Just answer all the questions "C" even the essay questions. :p

I had an "IQ" test done when I was 12, and was not given a number, just a general comment about my potential and learning ability.

If you're looking for ammunition on why not to take the test I suggest to you that you're psychologist may have offered this test to see how you react to testing. If so, then you're not going to prove anything by questioning his motivations or legitimacy of the test.

There is nothing sinister about IQ tests, take it and do your best. At the very least it will prove to your parents that you're willing to try harder to do better at school.

There's no harm in taking an IQ test, as long as you keep in mind that it only reflects particular things.

Yeah, IQ tests are basically useless in real world issues, all it does is test your critical thinking, which as far as working out your strengths and weaknesses I find that very hard to believe.

IQ tests SUCK! We talked about this at the beginning of the year in my psyke class. I have learning disabilities and I have never felt that IQ tests shown anything. I've had to take so many of the damn things over the years. Those stupid blocks get me every time. I have ADHD and NLD and very poor spacial reasoning, which IQ tests reflect. They're totally out of date and prove nothing. They're actually pretty detrimental. A lot of kids have test anxiety and hence do pretty poorly (or poorer than they usually would) on an IQ test, showing a lower IQ.

IQ tests are bullshit and a lot of studies have said so.
