Like you said OP I think when people say "4chan is evil" what they really mean is "/b/ is evil". Even then, they're not all going to be evil, just odd or out for a laugh.
I'd be willing to bet that most people who say 4chan is evil have never actually been on the site and have only hear what others have blown out of proportion.

People do need to distinguish more between 4chan and one particularly prominent board. The former is not evil, the latter is made evil by the few twisted fucks who post questionable (A considerable understatement) content.
This is why I sometimes call people /b/ers on other forums that arent as good as this one.
Though I tend to not go anywhere near 4chan im aware that there are some reasonable imageboards.

See, the only part of 4chan that exclusively fits what people think it is, is /b/. And I wouldn't say it's evil...it just doesn't fit to social norms, which can be very bad sometimes. Though, again, the majority of 4chan is pretty good. I mean, look at /sci/, unless /b/ is raiding it with child porn, it's a pretty interesting place to go.
Is 4chan as a whole "evil"? No.
Are certain parts of 4chan somewhat questionable? Yes.
It's actually not a half-bad place, given that you avoid the Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy and the porn boards. It's just that the aforementioned Wretched Hive gives the rest of 4chan a very bad rep.

You could even say that not all Nazi's were evil (although granted many of them were), but many others were just misguided/deluded/afraid of not joining. (off topic I know)Eumersian said:
