Is Archery the new thing?

Archery isn't in. People who don't know how to hold a fucking bow are in. Specifically the hunger games chick. That is mind-fuckingly bad.

that said archery is fun, and I believe in terms of Brave archery was just a past time back then far more than now, and one of the few enjoyed by men and women equally through the ages.

I think it's a coincidence, albiet a very consistent one. All of these movies have been several years in the making, and not all of them took the same amount of time. But, they managed to all come out in the same year, making it the year of the bow.

Archery has been a part of our media for quite a while, and with good reason. There's nothing particularly new about this trend.

Hawkeye and Green Arrow have been around for decades. Hawkeye is a staple of the Avengers, so that was bound to happen.

Of course anything in a fantasy setting is going to have archery, they can't exactly use AK47s, and it's the only practical ranged physical attacks.

A ton of games have bow & arrows or crossbows, been like this for as long as I can remember, Thief comes to mind.

That all aside, bows have been around in human history since nearly the beginning of civilization. They haven't exactly faded away like the trebuchet [for example] has, they are still commonly used for sport and hunting. By all means they should be prevalent in media.

Not to mention that they are considered less violent than guns. Probably because getting shot with an arrow is far less likely in real life than being shot with a gun. It's more removed from reality and more exotic. And you can depict the hero pinning the villain down with arrows or something without hurting them.

That's the reason super-heroes like Green Arrow and Hawkeye are considered to be more acceptable than if they shot people with a gun.
And I haven't seen Hunger games, but I suspect that's the reason she uses a bow.

I wouldn't say its the new thing. In the 1400's it was the new thing, but not so much now. Lately with all the complaints of guns on TV, the minor switch to a longbow seems to keep the censors at bay.

Might have to disagree on the less violent part. Sure we've all seen scenes in movies in games when a person gets riddled with bullets, but it seems so much more poignant and violent when a person gets taken down with arrows but struggles to keep going despite the shafts stick out their body. Not to mention there's a sort of brutality in yanking an arrow out of a victim's flesh to use again that guns simply can't match -- gathering my fired arrows in games gives me some sort of visceral pleasure that's hard to put into words.

They can be violent, but if you depict anything with a lot of blood and guts, you can make it more violent. I guess 'violent', is a wrong word.
Rather, they are easier to make kid-friendly than guns, even if you depict them 'realistically' without any magical qualities or extra powers.
Just like punching people is generally more kid-friendly than stabbing someone, even though you can depict someone beating up a person with a lot of realism and gore.

Also, I'm guessing, that having a character use a bow will get you a lower rating than a gun. Even if there's no blood and the victim dies the same way.

You have a terrible teacher probably.

I was able to manage 10 ends of 60 points each consistently from 18 metres after about 3 months due to my teacher being good at what he does and not letting me get away with a single shot with bad form.

Seriously, guys? How can everyone not see that there is a pattern of archer characters in TV Shows and Movies? Brave, The Avengers, The Hunger Games, the new Green Arrow tv show, and all those new video games with bow and arrow features are not proof enough?
