It depends on the style of dance and how you are dancing. A guy being led in Salsa is unmanly because the guy is the traditional lead. A girl leading the guy would appear unmanly simply from the style. A more free style type would not have the same stigma.

If you mean dance is general? That depends, do you like appearing confident, attractive, and fun in front of females? Is that unmanly?

Depends on the kind of dancing you're talking about, some dances are more unmanly than others while others are just plain classy.

Eh. I suppose what type of dancing. I also am from the Southern US where racists and bigots reside. I enjoy ballroom dancing and salsa dancing. I'm not particularly good at them, but they sure are fun. Also the ladies(if you're into them) sure do love a guy that can dance.

I do find ballet pretty girly though. Perhaps that is a double standard but I'm pretty sure I don't care. Yup...definitely don't care.

Just go ahead and do it. And don't bother trying to defend it because it's Latin American dance. It doesn't need defending. You'd be pretty much guaranteed a scholarship if you get into that.

Besides if you get good at it, when people try and give you shit, just show them a trophy or medal or something and it's okay. I heard it's pretty much the law in that region. King of the Hill taught me that.

I don't know about manly but so long as you are proficient at what you do it is impressive and worth your time.

replace "dancing" with "bettering yourself" and see if it answers your own question. There is never anything wrong with wanting to learn more or to be better educated on a subject, unless that subject is very morally questionable to begin with. If someone takes issue with it then let them feel free to never have anything to do with you ever again. You shouldn't be concerned with people that wouldn't support you. Your friends may bust your chops, but honestly that's what friends do. Embrace what you want and ignore the beer drinking, trucker hat wearing, good old boy type folk.

Why don't you ask Fred Astaire?
Because he's dead and seances are unmanly.

Sitting round a table holding hands like a bunch of old women? I'd rather dance.

Well, considering the Brazilian martial art capoeira is entirely founded on the beating the sh*t our of your opponent with your best dance moves...

Sadly the only kind of dancing I can really do is dance-pad gaming (specifically pump it up). I Still think dancing can be manly.

Nope.

Not unmanly at all.
This, although I can't stand dancing personally. I just feel foolish, because I probably dance horribly.

Even if it is, which it isn't, why does it matter? Do/learn/listen to/watch whatever you want, even if it is considered girly. In the end, you end up with an awesome skill and they're left with the same old trucker hat and beer belly.
True, good sir, true

I think the more fundamental issue is about expressing sexuality. Most people are pretty uncomfortable with it. A lot of guys see pretty much any expression of emotion (except anger) as unmanly... Dance is an art, its a form of self expression. I suspect those calling dance unmanly are the same types that think fine art is only something for gays and Europeans.
You hit the nail on the head. I think some people misconstrued what I meant and I should have been more clear, but I had already decided to not care what my ignorant brethren thought. I just wanted to know what people on the Escapist thought on the subject.

South American dancing? which part? because not all of us dance the same songs the same way (some of us don't even dance).
The presentation was mostly about the Argentine Tango and the Brazilian Samba were the two big ones. I know not all of South America. Also a Colombian one that the name sadly escapes me.

The OP is, in all seriousness, asking if something is "unmanly"?

I can't find a picture or short youtube clip to adaquate show disapproval of the stupidity of this notion.
Come to bible land and you can see how riddled with insecurities my fellows really are. I should have made it clear in my post that I do plan to ignore what my fellows think and lean a bit (don't know what yet) but that the the area were I live might not be so open to the idea.

As said before, the most unmanly thing to do is worry about whether something is manly or not.

Dancing tends to make people feel good. Do those people mean feeling good is unmanly as well?
Indeed.

Your thinking of Western square dances, that's a Texas thing. I'm a bit more north than that.

Nope.

Not unmanly at all.
Someone who's already very manly choosing to dance doesn't prove that dancing itself is manly. Technoviking could make pretty much any activity look manly if he's filmed doing it.
