http://australiangamer.com/news/1275_so_if_i_play_games_i_am_cool.html

I read this page recently and it really interested me and struck a cord, as this was happening frequently where I live. First of all, I want to say, I'm not trying to be elitist and say that you aren't a gamer if you don't get obsessed with games. The stuff that is mentioned in the article, like people acting as if they have played games when they obviously haven't touched a game in their life purely for the fact that it has become trendy, I am witnessing where I live a lot recently. I think it is just a bit ridiculous that people who have called me a 'geek' because I play games are, almost the next day, claiming to be life-long gamers. Is this happening in your area? Or is this just me and the people that live where I live? And is gaming culture being used as a trend?

Let me know what you think.

The trend will rise in polarity with the general public but in a few years it will fall in popularity. Mark my words, the so called public is fickle and drops things VERY quickly.

As for us gamers, we are in it for the long haul.

In short, screw the public and their casual gaming.

Isn't this what a form of entertainment has to deal with when it goes mainstream? The whole 'casual' people you have to deal with?

Bahh, the casual gamer, they come with every new Halo and every new add-on to WoW, they stay a bit and then leave bored. It`s like watching lemmings walk back and fourth between two walls.

I'm playing Civ 4.
Look, I get it. It was an obscure joke.

Let's just go back to whistling nonchalantly.
Oh, Civ 4, I see now. *walks off whistling nonchalantly*

Once upon a thirty or so years ago, games looked silly. People in them were collections of 8-bit squares. You'd need to use some real imagination to make out early graphics. And games were a lot harder then too, as I understand.

But now graphics are approaching photo realism. People look like people. Stuff blows up and looks cool. Modern games have had the difficulty scaled back (in general) to be more inviting to usually non-gamers, and now non-gamers are flooding in to play games.

Sure, we're going to be a little bit uncomfortable with "normies" coming into our game stores and talking about games as if they've been playing for years, but is it really worth us getting up in arms about? There'll always be something for the "hardcore" crowd.

That's my 2 cents.

EDIT: That said, it is always a laff to see someone talk about games and say they're the best at "Shooter Man 12: The Bloodening", and then go pale faced when someone asks a relatively simple question in regards to it.

Catching people out like that is one perk of the sudden boom in gaming!

That's a stupid article. But some hipsters I know definitely got more into the NES once it began showing up on t-shirts and being sampled in songs.

I blame Guitar Hero for starting a trend. All today, so many people at my school have been talking about how they're going to pick up World tour this afternoon/tomorrow.

It all goes in waves; we are now in a wave where games have a very low entry point, which will add many new gamers to the gamer group. A few will fall off when the games get more challenging, and in a few years only the "real gamers" will be playing (and will be told by the assholes that they are wasting their time). And then suddenly there will be a new casual wave again far into the future.
First "casual gaming" boom was with the arcade machines. We are probably far into the second casual gaming boom now, as the first more advanced games are on their way.

At least, that is how it look from my point of view.

I was talking more about the hipsters who proclaim they are game fanatics, yet have obviously played one once in their whole life, but now pretend to game because it is fashionable.

Personally, I don't care about how 'hip' gaming is. Trends come and go, and as long as there are fun games to play, I will be there.

I think its happening because gaming is getting more media coverage, whether it be good or bad more people play games now then ever so like any poser would they want to hop on the bandwagon. I mean we now have cable channels that primarily talk about gaming and technology and now gaming has become a trend to people. I myself started playing games when my grandparents bought me my first system an NES and I haven't stopped playing games. I would consider myself a casual gamer due to the fact that I work and go to school but I dont think I will ever stop playing.
