When i say cheat codes I dont mean the kind of code that allows you to unlock every level before you have even started, I mean the sorts of codes that enhanced the game or gave it a breath of fresh air.
Is it a good or bad thing that cheat codes do not really have a role in modern gaming?

I'll admit, I miss them, to a degree.
I still play some of my old games, so I still get to say "hello" to those old cheat codes every now and then.
Nowadays those cheats are in games as unlockable upgrades. capture 30 of this and you get this cool upgrade.
Do this and we will give you this ridiculously over-powered gun.

I think its fun to have some cheat codes that you unlock after finishing a game. It gives the game a bit more replay value and usually something to laugh at.

San Andreas had the best cheats evarr.
However, I think that cheats are best left behind, they just wouldn't fit in most modern games.

Yeah, I miss them a lot. Some of them where great. Goldeneye was only fun (to me anyways) because of the cheats. San Andreas had great cheats. I mean, what's the reasoning behind them now? "They fuck with achievements?" is that really such a big deal? and even if it was, how hard would it be to disable achievements when cheats where active? It's a shame that they're almost completely gone now. Hell, the one reason I'm considering upgrading my PC isn't even to play the high end PC exclusives, it's to play oblivion and fallout with mods.

However, i do apologise sir.. I do actually enjoy games more, when the option temptation is not there..
For me time to time i remember some of the good old cheats like balloon heads and flying tanks, these are the things I miss. It had the possibility of making a serious game hilarious however I dont miss the cheats that made things way to easy. Ahhh nostalgia 
GTA 4 is a great example of this
San andreas had some awesome codes that could really make things more fun like different costumes for the civvies, riot mode, everyone hates you, low gravity, flying cars (lollollollol), super jump the list really does go on
But unless i am very much mistaken (i hope not) GTA 4 seems to only have the bog standard, vehicals, ammo, health and money
